I'm not a pioneer, and I'm not a god. I am someone who has been involved with footbag for like 2 years. That's nothing. I think of the early generations of footbag players as the pioneers. They were the ones who took it from hacking in a circle to beginning freestyle, the people playing when there was no internet. With SO many tricks having been though up by people, how can someone like me think of myself as a pioneer? I am glad to witness what I do, and I am proud that I am in the footbag community and can hit some tricks. Maybe you have been playing for 10 years, I don't know. Maybe the "we" you're talking about is the people who have been playing for a really long time. But if that's not the case, I don't see how you can call yourself a god if you weren't there closer to the time the sport was created. I'm not saying that being involved with the sport isn't something to be proud of and that we're not helping the progression of the sport as a whole, but that first post feels like you want to pat yourself on the back for just existing at this time.

I'm really tired, so I hope that made sense.

I find the way you're using the word "god" kind of annoying which makes it hard to look past that to the actual meaning of your post. Could you use a different word or define it (god) in your own words?

I asked you to give the definition of the way you mean "god" because it can mean many things. I want to know what "meaning of god" you are using.

Someone who is worshiped, all powerful, very powerful, strong, all knowing, the one who created the world, teacher, father, best of the best? If you use several words to express what you mean by "god," when I read your posts about it, I'll understand you more clearly. That's all I was getting at.

Man I lauhged at this...
Nobody can take personal credit for something that happens in the footbag scene nowadays.
We are not pioneers anymore. People who played 10 years ago were pioneers- like Irish, Mulroney, Kenny Shults, etc... Some of them still play.

Nobody is god. Except Vasek, lol.

ok how can i explain this um.... by god i mean like tony hawk is to skateboarding all the skateboarding legends, the actuall legends not just the pro's. They all skateboarded before skateboarding came above ground and got all these sponsors and media attention
hawk
eddie
mullen
burnquist
etc.
of course not not all of us will become legends like them i doubt i ever will
but if and when footbagging comes above ground a lot of the people who post on these very forums will become legends just like my list of skateboarding legendsm, i suppose legend would have been a better word than god, but i didnt think i sounded as good as god, and so i used god

I know this leading the topic back a bit, but Nike's bags are probably the crappiest bags I've ever used, they're worse than crochet.

I think he was basically trying to get across that we're at the pivotal and beginning moments of the footbag boom. I feel kinda cool that I was here when everyone started doing Brocka mods-I remember when that began. He's saying we are the ones experiencing this type of shit. Vasek's not going to be playing forever-but we were here when he did. We may not have been a part of the beginning or the original BAP-but before Jeremy and Kevin-who were getting sponsorships?

Footbag is spreading like Herpes. There are clubs centered around specific and pivotal people in cities. We're the ones spreading it.

I at least think I understand the jest of your intro.

I can stall any object which is not bigger than my toe area...I could probably hit a mirage with it or any other simple trick...but what people on this forum are trying to tell you is that nike bags suck ass once you try some other high-quality handmade bags.

What bags have you used?

So you are saying...Hawk, Mullen, Burnquist, etc. is to skateboarding as Vasek, Moir, Lon, etc. is to footbag? All of those names are current top players right now. Some of us...you, me...are not one of those. That's kind of how I am taking your explanation. If you want to be included...god is not the word you are looking for.

That may sound mean, but I am not trying to be at all. I think we are just misunderstanding you or something.

Yup.....

So you are saying that you will enjoy being that strange old man who sits around and says "I used to do that BEFORE it was cool"

Thats not cool.

Sadly....i agree. This sport may be destined to never gain mass appeal. It is to confusing to the untrained eye...and in the words of one of my close friends....."Sure it looks hard.....but even the best players look kinda awkward"

First, I'd like to say that this is a GOOD subject. Even if you didn't like the way posshr put it, there are still a few topics here worth discussing:
We would be if footbag was going anywhere.

but its not.
Happily... I agree. At least in the sense that it's "not going anywhere" with respect to money and fame. People will be pushing the limits and inventing new things as long as footbag exists, so it will always be going somewhere (even though "progress" is never linear in a freestyle sport-- but back to the money/fame stuff....)

The awesome thing about footbag is that it can never be commodified to a great extent, like skateboarding has been (a footbag video game would SUCK, and I'm glad that it would). You don't have to pay hundreds of dollars for equipment like skiing or snowboarding, let alone paying to use the lifts on a mountain owned by some business. You don't have to pay for membership to a country club or have to put up with a bunch of snobs like with golf... screw golf. And unlike all of the sports you see on TV, our athletes aren't constantly surrounded by people (agents, press, etc) who just want to use them for the cash, because NOBODY in the footbag community is in it for the money and that's the way it should be.

One of the great things about footbag is that you can play it just about anywhere (on the sidewalk, on the street, up and down stairs, you name it),
And the whole do-it-yourself aspect is amazing. Anybody can stitch their own bag and play in a pair of sneakers. Most people cut up their shoes and modify them on their own, and even the high-end bags are sewn in the living room of your fellow freestyler, not made in some F-ing factory.

What I'm trying to say is that there is no way some big business is going to worm its way into OUR community (although free Red Bulls are nice :P ), and therefore footbag will never become popular. This is good because being popular sucks, and it would only ruin the culture you have all built. Isn't it great how people can drive themselves to events, picking up friends who need a ride along the way, and crash on the tournament director's floor with the rest of the smelly-footed vagrants? That kind of thing would be lost if footbag were turned into some commodity so that we can make money and become famous, so why do so many players want this? money and fame suck.

holy crap. i typed a lot, sorry guys i got carried away somehow. it's just the way i am sometimes.
i apologize, but i just want to say one more thing...

I empathize with the sentiment in the original post. It's exciting to know that today's beginners are at the front of a new wave of awesomeness for freestyle. It's been said before: Vasek is just the beginning. And some players have become "gods" (I prefer "legends"), but only within the footbag community itself. When I say gods/legends I mean that we all look up to people like Kenny, Pete, Vasek, Abshire, Hagget, Goldberg for what they've done for the sport on so many levels, and there's nothing wrong with each of us aspiring to do equally great things.

And contrary to some things I said earlier, I do have hopes of footbag gaining widespread recognition. We are growing at a pretty fast rate, and soon everybody will know the difference between footbag and Hackey Sack, and will recognize and respect that there are people out there that can do inconceivably amazing things with a hack, which is pretty cool. And I do have hopes of it becoming an Olympic sport.

wow, that was REALLY long. i hope someone reads all of this because i put a lot of thought into everything i said.

thanks

In regard to Chrisdean's post, don't you think athletes that train themselves every day to be great at our sport and compete should be rewarded with prize competition money? It's been that way with nearly every athletic sport ever to be played.

I just think with the ammount of wear and tear a professional footbagger puts on their body, maybe sponsorship could give them reward for all they've done to dedicate their lives to the sport, and especially the competition of that sport. It doesn't have to be through the roof like some sports, but maybe enough to help pay for a footbagger's professional career.

I heard that practically every winner of a footbag competition loses money on an event. Like an American spending a ton of money to get to Worlds and compete for example. If the sport was only casual and not competitive, I might agree with Chris. But people train and injure their body and dedicate their lives in order to compete in tournaments, and maybe there should be a little more reward for such dedication.

P.S. Sorry for the bump Chris!
