Sleeping In
Sleeping In
Here is a simple problem I've had for a really long time - Sleeping In. I think the main problem is I don't get enough sleep, but I'd like to know if any other people have a tip for just waking up. I like to think of myself as a person with a lot of will power, but when I just wake up, I can not get myself actually get out of bed and stay awake.
As of now, I use my cell phone and my radio to wake up me, but 95% of the time it takes me atleast 30 minutes to get out of bed. What in the hell is the secret to just turning off your alarm clock without fear you're going to just fall asleep and getting out of bed ?
ps - I'm writing this now because I slept in and I wanted to get to class to study an hour ahead of time...just like yesterday, and I slept in...again.

More C4 please <3
Getting up is hard work, so what I do is set my alarm clock approx 10 - 20 minutes faster than what the time actually is. It makes me think that I am a bit late and more urgency to get my butt out of bed
Also having a really loud and annoying alarm clock does the trick too.

I put my alarm clock on the other side of the room, where I have to get up to turn it off.

i always try for about 8 hours of sleep. So if i know i have to be at work at 7 am, i set my alarm for 6 and try to get to sleep at 11. I sleep with my feet near my alarm clock so in order for me to turn it off i have to sit up and reach over. Then when the alarm goes off at 6, i hit the snooze and keep doing that until it like 6:30. Usually by then i'm not so tired and can get out of bed.
It works for me....most of the time.

i would definitely say that my trick is to just physically get up. it's all down hill from there and there's no way around it.
though an interesting little item was brought to my attention by a buddy of mine. he uses a "suntime alarm clock" or something close to that name. you hook it up to a lamp and it slowly turns the lamp on in your room brighter and brighter starting 30 minutes before your set alarm. he claims that he wakes up everyday before his alarm even goes off and he wakes up fully energized because of this sunlight simulation. it may be something worth google'ing.

My technique combines Byrin's and Stephen's. I'm sooo bad at waking up. When I don't have school I'll sleep until, like, 4 sometimes (and that's if I went to bed at a reasonable time...)
My alarm clock is super annoying.
I use two. One of the little indiglo ones (where every couple rings it changes ring style, so you can't just phase it out) -- I set this one 45 minutes to an hour before I need to actually wake up. Then I have my big double-speaker alarm clock, which I put on the other side of the room which rings when I want to get up (and still gives me, like, over 45 minutes before I have to leave to catch my bus). The 45 minutes gives me an extra 5-10 minutes if I really need to sleep in. My clocks are also fast about 5-10 minutes, so I get that extra time too. It fools me. I find the extra "sleep-in" time helps a LOT. I hate getting out o bed
I missed every day of school but one last week.
I've heard that the best thing to do is set times to go to bed and wake up at the same time every single night and morning, no matter what you have to do that day. This is my biggest problem, because I am a night person, and I often stay up VERY late and get caught up in stuff and end up going to bed at like 4 in the morning.

If you are sleeping till 4 in the afternoon, you are over sleeping. This really screws up the body. Effectively you wake up with the same type of symptoms as someone who is extremely hungover.
I recommend throwing away your clocks and watches. Go to sleep when you are tired and get up when you wake up. I find that works well for me. I believe alarm clocks cause additional stress and disrupt the natural sleep cycle.

I used to have to get up before seven every day for four years to make it to highschool on time, and just in august I had to get up before six thirty to start work at seven am for a whole month. I'll let you in on a secret that many people already know, but for some reason isn't wide spread knowledge.
Here it is - It doesn't matter when you go to bed as long as you ALWAYS WAKE UP AT THE SAME TIME. Every day. Even weekends. Give yourself two hours maybe on the weekends, or three if you've been partying, but set your alarm for one time in the morning and never change it.
don't go to bed at the same time every night, go to bed when you're tired. And trust me, if you get up at seven every morning, you're going to get tired. And that's okay, because you'll start sleeping better, and you'll get used to waking up early.
This isn't for everybody, but I guarentee it works for a lot of people (just ask your parents or anybody else who works a nine to five job and has to get up at the same damn time every day).

Wow, great information guys. I think waking up at the same time every day works. This is what my friend does and he just can't sleep in. I think its more healthy for you too and you have more time during the day. Unfortunatly, like other people have said and same goes for me, there are night people. I'm just more active at night, I feel I can do more. I acuatly played footbag till 6 am once.
I tend to stay up late, wake up at 6 for school, go to school and take a nap after school. Then I feel a little more refreshed so I can stay up later, and the cylce continues, all which probably isn't good.
I have no problem waking up though, unlike other years where it would be so hard for me to wake up. It totally sucks, I hated it. I think part of it is mindset. If you kinda make yourself excited to wake up the night before, you'll wake up easier I think.
Yes, I know I am ranting, lol.
I've also been eating healthier too, which seems to give me more energy at waking up.

i just have my alarm clock on the wrong time (its like 20 minutes ahead) so it goes off twenty minutes before im supposed to get up, and i can hit the snooze button a few times, then look at the clock and feel like i slept in and im late, so i get ready fast, and leave the house on time everyday

Hmm. I also have had this sort of problem for a LONG time.
I've had various solutions working at various points, but as of recent they all started failing.
I used to have one alarm clock and it would go off and I would wake up. Or my parents would be mighty pissed and I would have wished that I had woken up. For some time that was motivation enough, but that was probably because I was still rather young.
Around 2-3 years ago, I started staying up really late...projects, random stuff, etc. Became a night person. Could still wake up reasonably well. Or if I knew I would not be able to wake up, I could easily pull 2-3 days without that sleep and feel fine.
Then I stopped waking up on time. Particularly because my schedule changed to a later one which caused less stress/pressure. I got used to it, etc. The semester after that, I got a second and third alarm clock and that was fine.
Anyway, eventually 3 alarmclocks didn't work, so I arranged them such that I'd have to work to turn them off. For example, I syncronized them to ring within a minute of each other and put one near the bed, one opposite the bed forcing me to walk and one somewhere on the closet forcing me to jump or climb a chair or like to get it. That worked for a while.
Doesn't anymore though. Usual morning goes as such. Alarm one rings turns off within a second and a half. Alarm two rings, I get up and turn that one off too. It goes with me. Around 5% of the time, I wake up at this point. Alarm 3 rings, I get my chair and turn that one off and take it with me. This also wakes me up another 5% of the time.
Now, what my parents observe. I get up and quickly kill one, then the other, then the last one and go to sleep without ever waking up.
As in sleep-walking type. Not quite sure what to do, because I never have any sort of recollection of turning the alarms off and for some, it takes quite a bit of dexterity to turn off.
Currently, I have an improvement, but it doesn't work al the time. Before I go to sleep, I put the alarm clocks in some random places so that when i hear them, I should have to search for them.
Oh, and going to sleep earlier than 4AM helps, but is rather unrealistic in my case.
Damn, that's a long account.

i usually don't even use my alarm clock. i just wake up when i wake up. im pretty good at waking up around the same time every day...unless i party real late the night before. When i do need my alarm clock, i have it on the otherside of my room, so i have to get up and turn it off. seems like thats what alot of people do.

I feel fortunate not to have this problem. I have friends that'll sleep until 7pm sometimes. I can't do that. On my 3 week Winter Break, I think I slept passed noon MAYBE twice, no matter what I was doing or what time I stayed up until the night before.
Also, my alarm clock wakes me up no matter what, and I usually wake up 30-50 minutes before it goes off. I even keep my alarm on a really low volume and it still gets me up. Once I am up I can't fall back asleep no matter what.
Don't mean to boast, I just wasn't aware that this was a problem that effects people so severely.
