For real! '94 era Nas threw away better verses than that (as did a lot of rappers back in that day).
Yeah, that was just the first verse that came to mind. That verse is definetly top 10 Nas verse though.

I got bored with the Mouse and the Mask really quickly, although I'm not really sure why.

Sorry Dude. Mos Def is king. He has a soulful voice and knows how to project his vocals like a fucking champ, and he sings better then alot of people. His raps are also fantastic, he has flow, and CHARACTER in his voice. He has passion in his vocals that I dont hear with Nas.

But Nas is a demi-god rapwise. I LOVE that song you quoted btw, but I skip the track after his verse, because the rest is pretty lame :D

The fact that you skip Raekwon and Ghost Face's verse's makes me queston your manhood, and you're ability to be able to decide who is "King". Plus you couldn't provide a better verse.

Anyways, just to prove myself right, here are Rae and Ghost's verses.
Perhaps bullets bust niggaz discuss mad money
True lies and white guys, we can see it through the eyes

Catch the most on tape, kilos disintegrate
Pyrex pots, we break, fiends lickin plates

In the building niggaz building, like little children starin
Them older niggaz aint carin
Sirens circlin fiends are lurkin in your baggage
oh, one's gone now, what, smack him in his cabbage

In the woodwork, crack cells bubble like Woolworth's
in the projects, richest niggaz rockin all the real worth
Police questioning, rooftop cats invested in
Tradin in they Lexus' GS's sendin messages

Two and two makes four, Cristal's crazily pour
Gun wars my crew phantom like swords

With the green leathers, hunded pound snakes and cakes
Fiends found in lakes, jeolously Jakes we shake

What I strive for is what I live for
Infatuated by material things, and it's wild like for war
like somewhere over the rainbow, I see a big pot of gold
Future stacks yo I hold
Thousands of cracks bagged up inside the shoebox
Don't keep jack in my lap, don't wanna see Tupac
Got two spots, a new lot, flooded with rocks
Shoot-outs making me hot, crooked cops Bad Tony and the ball drop

In the Now, I'm bangin niggaz for slide time
Hurry up Duke I'm next, show em mine
And what the fuck is you looking at?
By the way young blood, hit me off with that Green Bay hat
Watch your back inside the hall, new niggaz slide through
like doors yo, you're starin in the mess hall
Your adrenaline runs, cigarette niggas be swindlin
New jacks surrenderin, come home not rememberin

Made bail with different size kicks on, a white dress shirt
Lookin gay in the yard, and you got hurt
Flashbacks, of the day room, mop ringer style
Your faggot ass got bashed tryin to turn the dial
You told your boo you was whylin
Once you heard Wu, out of the blue, your family's from Shaolin

High class cooks, throw on vestes out of phone books
Infirmary niggas are screaming, "I got drugs!"
Sharpen toothbrushes 190 mixed with baby oil and shit
Your man's in the kitchen stashing ice picks
Well I'ma end this with a big red cherry on top
Me, Nas and Rae got the best product on the block

Ohhh, you were talking about the raek/ghost song.... I thought you were talking about his song Deja Vu, an incredibly old pre-Illmatic demo cut of Nas's. I'm pretty sure that's either the same verse from that song, or it shares the same first few lines or something.

Anyway,

Rappers I monkey flip 'em with the funky rhythm I be kickin
Musician, inflictin composition
of pain I'm like Scarface sniffin cocaine
Holdin a M-16, see with the pen I'm extreme, now
Bulletholes left in my peepholes
I'm suited up in street clothes
Hand me a nine and I'll defeat foes
Y'all know my steelo with or without the airplay
I keep some E&J, sittin bent up in the stairway
Or either on the corner bettin Grants with the celo champs
Laughin at baseheads, tryin to sell some broken amps
G-Packs get off quick, forever niggaz talk shit
Remeniscing about the last time the Task Force flipped
Niggaz be runnin through the block shootin
Time to start the revolution, catch a body head for Houston
Once they caught us off guard, the Mac-10 was in the grass and
I ran like a cheetah with thoughts of an assassin
Pick the Mac up, told brothers, "Back up," the Mac spit
Lead was hittin niggaz one ran, I made him backflip
Heard a few chicks scream my arm shook, couldn't look
Gave another squeeze heard it click yo, my shit is stuck
Try to cock it, it wouldn't shoot now I'm in danger
Finally pulled it back and saw three bullets caught up in the chamber
So now I'm jetting to the building lobby
and it was filled with children probably couldn't see as high as I be
(So whatchu sayin?) It's like the game ain't the same
Got younger niggaz pullin the triggers bringing fame to they name
and claim some corners, crews without guns are goners
In broad daylight, stickup kids, they run up on us
Fo'-fives and gauges, Macs in fact
Same niggaz'll catch a back to back, snatchin yo' cracks in black
There was a snitch on the block gettin niggaz knocked
So hold your stash until the coke price drop
I know this crackhead, who said she gotta smoke nice rock
And if it's good she'll bring ya customers in measuring pots, but yo
You gotta slide on a vacation
Inside information keeps large niggaz erasin and they wives basin
It drops deep as it does in my breath
I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death
Beyond the walls of intelligence, life is defined
I think of crime when I'm in a New York state of mind

Yeah Nick, Mos is really good, but he couldn't even try to spit like Nas used to. Especially since he fell off with "New Danger." I think Talib is better than him anyway, though they're both pretty awesome--Talib is just more consistent.
But regardless, they both looked up immensely to 2Pac and Biggie, so maybe you should listen to more of [Pac and Biggie].

Oh COME ON, how can you say Raekwon and Ghostface actually had decent raps in that song? Have you heard it recently? Im not impressed. they have done alot better in other material, but please, just listen to their sections again. I CRINGE visibally on certain parts of their verses.

And I just finished listening to The New Danger, and even though im in the minority I love the cd. The music is different then anything I've heard, and I love all the different styles of music he throws in. Plug it in, put some good headphones on and close your eyes and listen to it, it draws you in its ambience like a novel. and the stuff he does with his vocals. Hes an amazing singer and supremely gifted and talented and flows like arctic ice.

Talib is good, but inconsistant, and you know it dude. Everyone knows it. When hes on, hes fucking ON, but most of the time he cant hold a rhythm and hes always playing catchup with the beat, and then going too fast to try and squeeze in an extra word or five.

Anyway, yeah. I dont like Tupac at all, actually. The beats are too synthetic, and im just not into his stuff at all. Biggie is good, again a bit synthetic beat-wise but I like his voice alot, and he seems a bit more playful. I might be completely wrong but Ive only heard about five or six songs each from both of them. Not really my cup of tea in general.

And, because everyone only seems to consider the actual text and not the delivery (BTW, Id like to make a comparisson here: Its like saying Yngwie Malmstreem is the best guitarist, and Clapton sucks because hes not as fast).

Mos Def, Thieves in the Night

Yo, I'm sure that everbody out listenin agree
That everything you see ain't really how it be
A lot of jokers out runnin in place, chasin the style
Be a lot goin on beneath the empty smile
Most cats in my area be lovin the hysteria
Synthesized surface conceals the interior
America, land of opportunity, mirages and camoflauges
More than usually -- speakin loudly, sayin nothin
You confusin me, you losin me
Your game is twisted, want me enlisted -- in your usary
Foolishly, most men join the ranks cluelessly
Buffoonishly accept the deception, believe the perception
Reflection rarely seen across the surface of the lookin glass
Walkin the street, wonderin who they be lookin past
Lookin gassed with them imported designer shades on
Stars shine bright, but the light -- rarely stays on
Same song, just remixed, different arrangement
Put you on a yacht but they won't call it a slaveship
Strangeness, you don't control this, you barely hold this
Screamin brand new, when they just sanitized the old shit
Suppose it's, just another clever Jedi mind trick
That they been runnin across stars through all the time with
I find it's distressin, there's never no in-between
We either niggaz or Kings
We either bitches or Queens
The deadly ritual seems immersed, in the perverse
Full of short attention spans, short tempers, and short skirts
Long barrel automatics released in short bursts
The length of black life is treated with short worth
Get yours first, them other niggaz secondary
That type of illin that be fillin up the cemetary
This life is temporary but the soul is eternal
Separate the real from the lie, let me learn you
Not strong, only aggressive, cause the power ain't directed
That's why, we are subjected to the will of the oppressive
Not free, we only licensed
Not live, we just excitin
Cause the captors.. own the masters.. to what we writin
Not compassionate, only polite, we well trained
Our sincerity's rehearsed in stage, it's just a game
Not good, but well behaved cause the ca-me-ra survey
most of the things that we think, do, or say
We chasin after death just to call ourselves brave
But everyday, next man meet with the grave
I give a damn if any fam' recall my legacy
I'm tryin to live life in the sight of God's memory
Like that y'all

I'm curious to know what constitutes a good verse for you. Obviously it isn't rhyme scheme, syllable uniformity, creative subject matter, flow, and multiples, because both Ghost and Rae come with all these.

What parts, exactly, do you cringe on?

"Police questioning, rooftop cats invested in
Tradin in they Lexus' GS's sendin messages"

"With the green leathers, hunded pound snakes and cakes

You'll just have to accept the fact that I prefer Mos over all 3 of the other rappers mentioned. Its called "Personal Opinion" and you aren't going to change it. I've explained why, and anyway we can move on now.

ZION I!!!! So good. Listening to alot of his stuff recently, its really unique and banging. Hes got flow and character and sweet beats. Czech it out peoples!

You know who I 've realized really fuckin' sucks, lately? Fuckin' MF DOOM. What the hell?

Yesterday I was listening to this Panzah Zandahz (mediocre producer/mash-up dude) CD where he made beats/loops out of Radiohead's music, and had some rappers going over the beats.

One of them was MF Doom, and I was listening to it, just going, "What the fuck?" cuz of the ridiculous shit he was saying. It was the music from "Change the Beat.":
A modern day marvel but terrible, better horrible
When he grab the mic, son he crushed up all his metacarpals
He said he ain't mean it, totally by accident
After the show, he didn't follow where y'all taxi went
Will this be available on wax? Ask Max Mill
They on the opposition to his ass wack tax bill
But will it pass the senate? Slum lord tenant
And super like 1-A, have a fun stay
wtf?
One day, he plan to put in a runway
With enough land for his own projects and gun play
Section 8 penthouse, maid look like Faye Dunaway
Alotta y'all assed out like gay runaways wtf? fay dunaway/gay runaways?
It's how they say "semi-risque"
All day everyday, give out Emmy's the quick way
Have the average mc say, "Gimme a sick day!"
They really ain't got shit to say like Timmy McVeigh retarded
Get a hunch, a real rag tag bunch
In school, he kept a doo rag in his bag lunch
Just to eat heads on some breakdance shit and spit

He ripped this skit in sanscript
If the pants fit, sport 'em but rock 'em low
Your man like Rollo on the slow, can't knock it though
It's like the same hustle bro, two knuckles glow
Tucked in Le Tigre, just let the name buckle show

Good googly moogly, see that loogie? no.
Yeah, but keep it on the D.L. Hughley
You don't watch her, he might Howser like Doogie
Just to cut her loosie like *swoosh* Mitsurugi
Gooey gum drops, who he got his style from?

His pops, you gotta give the bum some props
Ask ya sister, her beat box is more thicker
Doom, that nigga detox with malt liquor

Villain for hire, admire the sound
Make sure The Price Is Right before he come on down! stupid
Rappers be on some, "You you you!"

Forgot who they talking to, too much pork stew what?
They need to not come out with nothing new
Blew the whole shit up on some, "What this button do?"
Doom cheat the game like walk-thru
Run 'em, son 'em like Mr. Rourke do Tattoo
The way alotta clowns get down is unnatural
This flow flip like oranges, apples
Rhymes like limes to a Lemonade Snapple
Leave her at the chapel, don't eat Scrapple
First thing they notice when they come to is they bling is gone
Then they start remembering the Klingon with the rings on
In came the Villain with their own gear like, "Hi, there"
Y'all play the rear, this whole year MY year
Metal face beard like Brillo pad
Y'all know his steelo so don't feel so bad
Seed call him, "Ol' dad," the one the ol' hoe had
Knew he was a winner since a swimmer in the gonads
Okay pal, pay him like Paypal
So we could be A-OK not OK Corral
I think today I'll make the ladies say, "Ow"
And maybe fuck around take a bow, now

Who made his first mill and still carry razor blades
Used to be straight A's and still made the grade
Retarded ass, how he get cash so fast
Year after last, left back in the retarded class
Shoulda went to Boces
Watch him all closely, who he think he supposed to be
Villain who always win, at least he stay consistent
Find out where that bitch went, get a room pitch a tent

Yo yo, Max, yo change the beat yo
You got another one ... nah yo
Ok I just got tired of commenting on the retarded shit in his rhymes. And Nick, you're right, the delivery is important, so here is a link to the song:
http://s22.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2FUB ... WOQP072JY0

Can you believe that shit (the beat is actually really cool)? It's actually even worse when you hear it. I could pay a 6th grader to mumble into my $50 microphone and it would sound better than that shit.

Now in my opinion, Big L > everybody, so compare it to this brilliantly-composed tragic tale of betrayal and revenge.

http://s22.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3SOH ... YKD80PSHFH
Me and my man was cruisin through the streets and everything was flowin nice
The corner's crowded, niggaz must be rollin dice
I parked the ride so my nigga Iroc can crash the lye spot
and I'ma gamble until he come back - why not?
Click-clack, cock the gat back, gotta be strapped
The game was mad packed, mad cats pockets was fat
They playin cee-lo, my dick get hard when I see dough
I bets nothin less than a G yo, you know my steelo
First I was losin then I started throwin headcrack
after headcrack, got my bread back, jumped in my red Ac'
I'm waitin for my nigga to come out of the spot
I see niggaz startin to plot, and I'm far from my block
Finally he walked out, told him, "Hop the fuck in"
On my face he saw the grin and said, "How much did you win?"
I estimated about, 45 maybe 50 G's
My man was hungry so I dropped him off at Mickey D's
Now I'm alone, headin home to rest my dome
Spotted some niggaz trailin so I picked up the phone
Called Bones, I said, "Yo son, I'm on the run
Need your help before I get done
Meet me downstairs, bring your big gun"
I don't believe this, this nigga said he can't make it
cause some bitch is in his house butt-naked
and then he hung up
And this supposed to be my man and he don't give a fuck
That duck sold me out just to get a nut, what?
I'm cruisin fast and they still behind me
The same nigga who I won the money from, and his grimy crimey
It's about to get, real hasty
Grabbed the steel, took it off safety
cause I refuse to let these niggaz waste me
I started to cruise fast, then stopped short and made 'em crash
And now them fags is all bloody from the shattered glass
And one of them had passed, when his face smashed the dash
I was injured too, leakin with a deep gash
I ain't panicked, I was quite calm
Couldn't use the right arm, so I grabbed the gat with the left
Walked up to the car the creep was stuck in the seat
Looked at him, shook my head then started buckin my heat
It's over now, cause both of these motherfuckers asleep
I think I'm dyin, I'm feelin weak out on my feet
but before I got some medical help, I had to catch a cab first
to one-forty-first and Bradhurst
That's where Bones live, walked in the buildin, staggerin
Lookin tore down, shot his door down and beat his whore down
From the look in my eye, he knew he would die
Started to cry, stuck the gat to his head and said, "Why?"
Then he offered me, all of his cheese
then dropped to his knees and begged me please not to squeeze
Then his brains got blast out, he's ass-out, then I dashed out
into the streets covered with blood, about to pass out
The hospital's up, a couple of blocks, I'm on my way but
damn, here comes a couple of cops; I pulled out
and started blowin they started blowin back I'm goin all out
I ain't holdin back, I been to jail once and I ain't goin back
I kept shootin, one shot caught a cop dead in his top
The other pig ducked behind a big truck
I was bleedin real bad, and couldn't stop it
but still had the fifty thou' profit in my pockets
The coast was clear, so I jetted to a park that was near
Seen kids playin everywhere then threw the cash in the air
I watched all of them, run for they share
and all I can do was stare
I got weak and fell on my rear
Now I can hear the sirens, that means here comes the Jakes
but it's too late, I'm knockin on the pearly gates

Word. I hate it when you tell someone he sucks and they write you off as some kid who only listens to womanizing mainstream shit. It's like they get self righteous 'cause they listen to "intelligent hip hop," even when you're obviously smarter than them

Today I was in my lit class, and someone had drawn a picture on the board that was a blatant rip-off of Sam Flores's style, and wrote "Madvillian" next to it. At the end of class I walked up and wrote "1) You are not Sam Flores. 2) You spelled "Madvillain" wrong. 3) Madvillain really sucks." next to it. Evidently someone in the next class was just vehemently mad at me about that, for some reason. Whatever. :?

Big L was more underground than any of those fools when he was alive.

Conversely, though, I really like that beat. It's really simple--no bass--and that ever present tone in the back just builds tension and is never actually resolved by a nice chords. Really builds suspense I think. It's also really suspenseful how they add the drum beat one layer at a time, and then snare last, and then snare releases all that built-up tension. Really creative and minimalistic, I say.

Who gives a shit?

But yeah, Casualties of a Dice game is a pretty sick song. Big L was one of the best at story telling. Easily the best punch line rapper ever anyways.

He has a new CD coming out this year, I don't know when though. It's called "Real Legends Never Die" or something like that I think.

I still don't see how Rae and Ghost's verses were anything but classic.

Because some fools are all about how "underground" someone is. If they're more "underground," they must be better. It just makes it easier to prove them wrong.

Leavin' fags in body bags with tags on they big toe"

Has Little Brother been mentioned yet? I really like them (although you start to get tired of 9th's production style sometimes). Phonte from LB also has a solo CD out under the name 'Foreign Exchange' with some with some producer from the Netherlands. Reeeally worth checking out.

Nicolay is the producer I think. Yeah its hot shit! Big Pooh has a cd out too, Sleepers, which is so-so, but theres a couple good songs on it. I LOVE "Every Block" on it, what an amazing song!

OK, some more stuff for all of you:

"I never leave my block without the vest and the chrome
'Cause all my jewels be rocky like Sylvester Stalone"

Big L has tons of quotables.

How can you get sick of 9th's production, Stephen? I think he's the best producer to come out within the last 5 years. He's the only new producer who gives me the same genuine feeling as a lot of my older, favorite producers.

Ninths production gets old because its messy, he uses alot of reverb so things get a bit muddled, though he gets this atmospheric sound thats super nice.

Its not Punchy though, like say J5 production. Differents strokes for different folks.

I don't get sick of it; it's just kind of repetitive. He has a really sick and unique style, but you can kinda get tired of it after listening for a long time. It's all kinda the same style of old funk/soul samples.

I agree though, he's really good. Probably on my top 5 if anyone ever made me draw up a list.

Edit: And in a lot of his beats the snare hits riiiight on the tip of the beat, to where it's almost early. Like if you're keeping metronomic time with your foot, it'll hit riiight before your foot touches the ground. It's not horrible, and it's something not everyone does, but it can start to drive you insane.

Also, to Nick, J5 is produced (or at least their beats are) by Cut Chemist, who is one of the illest DJs eeever ever, so of course their beats are beyond sick.
