No, I didn't count the dropped butterfly (I mean, I did count it as a contact, but not as a hit trick). I watched it again and it's definitely 30 contacts, counting the 1st butterfly and the 2nd ps whirl. I'm pretty sure it's 189, but it doesn't really matter. Mostly, I'm just happy for Kovacs. I'd be way happier scoring 170 than 155.

As for me, my shift to 1st place doesn't really change anything. Shred30 is really an event where you compete against yourself, not others, and looking at it that way, I still didn't set a new best (didn't break 206). That said, I did break 200, so that's still a personal victory. Like I said before, I'm just happy that I didn't choke in any of the events, and feel like I competed near my full potential. :)

January 11th, 2006

Got a haircut today, and I figured that if I needed to shower, I might as well get in a little shred first. I played really lightly, and it was fun. I was surprised to hit ps whirl to blizzard, considering both were flipside tricks. Oddly enough, I couldn't hit it strongside! I also hit ps whirl-duck butter-pdx torque-ps whirl, which felt cute. The move of the day was pixie paradon, which for some reason felt really strong on one side. I didn't put it in combos, but I was throwing them randomly midstring all over the place (on one side). I hit it bsos once, just so I wouldn't feel as bad about doing so many strong side.

Did pool rehab again today, so I'm happy with a light session. Hopefully I'll get in a more intense shred tomorrow.

Friday the 13th

Didn't play yesterday, and only had a light session today. Probably a good thing to take it a little easy, especially after a tournament.

My shred was interrupted today when a posse of like 7 kids, aged between 6 and 10 I'd say, came onto the basketball court and asked to hack with me. I only had 32s, which was unfortunate, cause one of the kids booted my Lesh bag as hard as he could. That bag is on it's last legs, so that kick made it bust a huge hole. :x Whatcha gonna do though? I wish I had a revolution sandbag on me... the kids had fun though, and at least now they are aware that there's a lot more to "hackey sack" than they had thought. Their chaperone was a quiet high school kid, who showed interest in footbag, even after the little kids left. I taught him toe stall, told him about .org, and arranged to meet up with him again, so hopefully something good will come of that.

My session before the rugrats wasn't too notable, but I think I figured out flip flurry. I had hit it before, even bsos a few times, but today I changed the way I thought of the timing. For some reason, I used to think of flip flurry as a different motion than strong flurry, but today I thought of it like strong flurry (focus on a superfast dlo, and the extra dex just happens), and sure enough, my flip flurries got a lot easier and more consistent. The highlight was a string with ps whirl and flurry both bs in os. Next time I shred I'll try and go for some interesting flip flurry combos, or try some stylish flurry bsos combos.

Been real busy lately looking for and applying to jobs. I've hardly been playing at all this last week, but that could be a good thing. I find it's usually good to take a bit of a break after a tournament, and I feel like I deserve one.

Yesterday, January 15th 06, I had my first real shred in like 5 days. There was a real cold wind outside, so I figured I'd try playing in my garage. Bad idea: I dropped the bag once, and the panels which touched the floor INSTANTLY turned black. It was incredible. No way could I play there. I felt my mental game start to slip... 4 days without a serious session (my last shred was interrupted by little kids), and the one day I want to play, is like the only day in the year when it's bad playing conditions outside. :?

Undeterred, I put on some gloves and went out, and through sheer force of will, kept my mental game in check and ended up having a pretty good session. More than any of the tricks or combos I hit, I felt happiest that I was able to stay calm mentally and enable myself to have a good shred despite bad conditions. :)

Going into the session, my only goal was to continue working on flip flurries. I'm definitely still getting used to the mental work behind the trick. I have to keep reminding myself to think of it the exact same way as my strong side. Sometimes, I find myself thinking about the 2nd dex, and when that happens, you're doomed. When I focus on just getting the plant foot down quickly and going for the final legover, the move takes care of itself. I think I made some progress on it. By the end of the session, I had hit it BSOS on four occasions. The last time was the most satisfying, as I threw in a pixie spinning clipper in the sealing combo 8)

My work with flurries was scattered throughout the session. I had a lot of disparate highlights... I was looking for stylish bsos links and strings, and when I got tired I'd go for big tricks of mine I hadn't done in a while. Like, I hadn't skooled frantic set in about half a year, so I wanted to make sure I could still do them. For a change of pace, and so I buy more time to work on job apps, here is a list of my session highlights.

*Frenzy both sides.
*Blizzard-smear-ss swirl bsos
*pdx drifter-pdx whirl-pdx drifter-pdx whirl-pdlo-dimwalk-ripwalk-ripwalk-diving butterfly-some other stuff midstring, without planning it out.
*Pixie blender bsos, first try! 8O Where did that come from? Nice surprise, but definitely kinda random.
*alpine leg-blurriest-ps whirl, but the last trick dropped off my foot.
*Pixie spinning eclipse again, atomic diving ss mirage again, pyro mirage again, all pretty easily.
*Inspired by Pat Tallon: Darkwalk-stepping whirl-pdx torque to start a string.
*alpine leg-swifter to start a string which included flurry, blurry whirl, and some other 5s 8)
*A nice string that started with pixie spinning osis, then had fog, flurry, pdx torque, some other stuff.

I listened to David Bowie on my iPod throughout, which may have been a factor in my keeping mentally level throughout. Life on Mars, Rebel Rebel, Young Americans, Ziggy Stardust, stuff from that period.

Towards the end of the session, I decided I'd work on whirr a little. I had never hit it clean before- all my attempts that I stalled were pretty clearly thin. I never really held out much hope for learning the trick, since it seemed so hard to clean. But after seeing Jorden and Pat Tallon hit such undeniably clean whirrs in person at NYJ, I figured I may as well give it some more tries. I thought of it in a bit of a weird way, but had some success. I'd do a clipper, then without putting that foot down, I'd try to whirl with the other leg. This would give me a whirling set, giving me the first dex uptime, then I'd just whirl on the way down. Using this method, I hit my 2 best whirr attempts ever. One of them may have actually been clean... it felt clean and looked good from my angle. But I've met so many people who hit it thin, and say it "felt and looked good" to them, that I really don't want to claim it without seeing it on video first. With my luck getting filmed, who knows when that will be... Anyway, I definitely made some progress on it. I don't want to push it too much though, since that's the knee that was having problems a month ago.

So overall yesterday was a good session. Hopefully my schedule will clear up some this week, cause I don't feel like taking much more time off footbag. Then again, it looks like CSS won't happen for me, so I'm in no rush to get back into top form either.

That's probably because I hadn't. I was still living in Tokyo 2 months ago... I think you're confused.

Didn't play footbag yesterday, cause I was too busy preparing another job application. Not fun, but necessary. I'm hoping to move to either the Bay area or NYC. We'll see... it'd definitely be nice to live near a bigger shred scene. I've been in Arizona for almost 2 months, and I've only played with other locals on 2 occasions.

My right knee felt a little sore from my last session. I think whirr was the culprit... I have to remember that I tweaked my knee pretty badly just over a month ago, so I should make a point to lay off it for at least a couple more months. I resolved to play lightly today, and did a good job of it. I think I only hit one 5 add all session, and it was pdx torque, possibly the 5 add which puts the least stress on my knee.

For some reason, tripless stuff was flowing real easily and nicely today. Ripwalk-blur-parkwalk-blur-dimwalk (using the flip pixies) in the middle of a long tripless string without having to really think about it. It felt really great to play in and out of flip pixies without having to concentrate, it's like my work on flip pixie is finally paying off and they are becoming part of my reliable repertoire. Hippy atom-smear repeat to start a string. Plo-smear repeat. Parkwalk-pdx whirl-drifter-dlo repeat, a couple moves later in the string: ducking clipper-diving clipper repeat into diving butterfly-ducking butterfly repeat to pdx drifter, to a few more contacts. The link of the day was pdx drifter to gdlo. I didn't plant on the gdlo either... I felt like Flash or something 8)

Tomorrow I have no job apps due, so hopefully I can get in another shred. I think I'll work on longer strings, to rest my knee. It also never hurts to up the old string length. :)

Im glad that you got a sesh in. When you say the weather was cold, I wonder how cold it was, I mean you are in AZ right? I thought it didn`t get that cold there, but maybe I am wrong about that too :?

Yeah, I lived most my life til high school graduation in NYC, college in Rhode Island, and my first 3 years after graduation in Tohoku, so I know COLD, and Tucson in the daytime is never really cold. But it's all relative. If I have to wear gloves outside and I don't sweat, that qualifies as cold. Speaking of which, I had another session today (January 18th, 06)

I should have played earlier in the day when it was warmer, but I figured a light session is better than no session. In my last entry, I said I planned on working on string length, but that was under the assumption I'd play at the basketball courts. Instead, I played on my terrace, which is much smaller, so I ended up going for big tricks and combos more than long runs.

My work with pixie spinning sets got me to thinking: I wonder if I can stepping spin in the same direction? I had hit go-go mirage (stepping gyro mirage) in Japan a few times, but spinning in the opposite direction that I pixie spin. So today I tried flip go-go mirage, and hit it! :D I also hit it strong side, which felt cool. For me, go-go mirage is a pretty hard trick, so I was very stoked to hit it both sides in a session.

I had some success with blenders today. I hit flipside pdx blender pretty easily, which I handcaught. Encouraged by this, I hit pdx blender bsos shortly thereafter :) Probably only my second or third time getting it bsos. Then I tried food bsos, and got it first try! Threw a fog in the run too. I also got pixie blender on both sides, but couldn't try for bsos without risking running into my BBQ. :x

Throughout the session I tried for alpine atomic whirl, since I just saw the new Byrin Wylie vid. I got my foot on it a bunch of times, but never sealed it. I know I can hit it sloppy, but I was making an effort to hit it undeniably deep. I hit pixie diving ss whirl as practice for alpine reactor, and was pleased to hit it deeply. I had hit it before, but probably over a year or two ago.

Atomic whirl to pdx torque first try. Flurry to paradon swirl, for the first time since I was in Australia. Alpine leg-pdx torque-pdx blender. Atomic drifter to a run that had a bunch of drifters in it. I also finally hit phoenix-fog repeat, and I got it on my first try too! :D

I closed out my session with one more new trick: Backside fog! I had been hitting BS bed for maybe around a year now, but BS fog had eluded me. For some reason, it clicked today, and I sealed my first one, good and deep. None of that double cheek over crap that lots of symp dlos devolve into. I sealed it with a run where I hit fog bsos.

Next session I have a few moves I want to try, but I think my goal will be to throw more 5s casually into my runs. I kind of find that my strings are either mostly combos of 4s with some 3s and BOPs, or a string which is like 5 add, BOP BOP, 5 add, BOP BOP hard 4, etc. I'd like to combine the two for better balance.

I really hope you get a job in NYC so we can chill and shred. That would be so ill. Props on all your new tricks, you hit some styly combos. Try fog>atomic drifter>pdx. torque.

Yeah, NYC would be ideal on several fronts. I could kill for a canoli now... :x

But Arizona has its charms. I shredded outdoors in shorts and a t-shirt (thanks Kolo sport!) and it was just perfect weather. That combined with the freestyle hunger of missing a day of shred, helped me have a fantastic session. The day off was probably good for my knee. I should still be careful, but I kind of feel like I can get away with almost anything other than whirling set, nuclear set, and excessive symposiums on that leg.

I did a pretty cool warmup today. Usually, I go for 100 consecutive kicks to warm up, but it gets a bit boring. Today's session was at a basketball court, so I did my consecutive kicks to warm up... while walking on the 3 point line, then down the baseline, then rounding out the halfcourt, and making my way back to under the basket, where I sealed my trek with a smoke (the move, not a cigarette). Pretty fun, I wonder how many kicks it was.

I didn't have any goals today. One of the coolest aspects of today's session, was that ideas came to me easily, and I usually ended up hitting them without too much effort. I never really felt "hung up" on any combo or move I was trying. And whenever I hit a concept, a new idea would spring into my head almost immediately.

My first challenge was hitting smoke to barfly, which I soon got both sides, and then eventually bsos. When I bsosed it, I also had a mobius (plant) in the sealing combo. I worked on flurries throughout the session, and ended up hitting it bsos on 4 or 5 occasions. I'd always hit the flip first, and I never missed a strong flurry when there was a bsos opportunity. Flurry and blurry whirl both bs in the same string. Had a run with blurriest, fog, and blurry whirl all BS in OS. I dropped trying to bsos pdx torque in the same run.

Encouraged by my success with blenders last session, I hit pdx blender bsos again! In the sealing combo I also had blurriest, smoke, and fog. In a replay of yesterday, I also hit food bsos first try, and had one fog in the sealing run. Atomic zulu bfly-pdlo-smoke.

Another highlight for me was hitting pixie grifter on both sides. About a year ago I had a session in Tokyo, where I lost my mental game cause I kept footing it both sides, but couldn't hit it. Today, I hit them both in under ten tries total. I also hit sailing clipper (same trick, but crispy), and in the same run hit sailing opp clipper (crispy dimwalk). Sailing felt pretty good today, so I tried sailing ss dlo, and hit my best one yet. I've been hitting that trick for a couple years now, but today was my best ever. I got a good plant on the second dex, and the last stall was real controlled. I was real excited to hit it so well.

Had a run with pyro mirage and pixie spin butterfly. Had another run with food, diving butterfly, ducking clipper, and blur-dimwalk all BSOS, with a smoke at the end. I also tried Honza's sick3 combo from Montreal Worlds, and hit it pretty easily: alpine leg-fog-pixie ss blender. I also hit blurrier to ps egg to start a string, which somehow struck me as a Jeremy Mirken combo. Fun, challenging link for sure.

At the end of the session I was pretty tired, but for some reason I decided to try some furious tricks. I hadn't done the set in a looooong time, but it came back to me pretty quick (only one side though) and it didn't hurt me at all; both pleasant surprises. The method I used was thinking of the set as a high step set, then bringing my knee to my chest immediately after. Using this method I hit some janiwalkers which were mid/up timey. The last butterfly wasn't "the," if you know what I mean. That said, it also wasn't good enough to step set out of, but even so it was an improvement over some of my old janis. I had some success playing into Jani, I hit it out of the following: pixie butterfly, ducking butterfly, and parkwalk. Jani-duck clip-pdx torque. I also hit and sealed my first deep fury in God knows how long.

By this point I was exhausted, but felt really happy with my session. No new tricks, but I hit a bunch of hard tricks I hadn't done in a long time, got a bunch of hard links without trying too hard, and I didn't get frustrated throughout. I really feel like good sessions are meant to be savored, and I really enjoyed this one. Yeah footbag! :)

I really wanted to shred today, but I decided to roll the dice and go see a classical guitar concert at U of Az. I figured that I can have good shreds whenever, whereas if the concert was any good, I'd get some culture. The concert turned out not to be my cup of tea, which meant I lost the hours of the day from 2pm to 5:15 pm. That sucked, but hey, I gambled and lost. What can you do.

Disappointed about the lack of footbag, I figured I should do something to redeem my day, so I did: I bought tickets to CSS7! That's right, I'm officially going. The day after returning from Spain, I get on another plane and go to Colorado. Who's hardcore? I just hope the jetlag doesn't hit me too hard. I'm going to need all my energy, plus some good luck to finish near the top in Shred based on the competition that awaits. Lon, Penske, Clavens, and possibly Moir. At least now I have an incentive to work on my Shred30 again.

See some of you in Colorado in a month! :)

Edit: So you're gonna be around a couple days before the tournament too? We should have a one-on-one.... I couldn't find a way to say that without it sounding like a sexual innuendo, so take it for what it's worth.

  Sweet, that made me laugh. My deal: I arrive in Denver on Friday afternoon, and I leave on Monday afternoon. I think I'm going to crash at Brad's place, but I'm a little intrigued by this suite idea. I don't know how hard I'll be able to party or shred, because I may very well be jet-lagged. I fly in from Spain to Tucson late on Thursday night, and I fly out to Denver on early Friday morning. Hopefully adrenaline will be able to carry me through it all, but I'm not putting much pressure on myself kicking-wise. I just feel lucky I can sneak in an appearance, and if I play well at CSS, that'll just be a bonus. I'm also a bit worried about whether I'll be able to practice/play footbag while I'm in Spain. Definitely not ideal conditions to enter a tournament, but at least I'm going.

So after 2 days of not playing, I felt it imperative to play yesterday (January 23rd, 2006). Usually, if I haven't played in a couple days, I go into my first session back without any goals. But since I bought tickets to CSS7, I figured I should practice my Shred30 and Big3s a little bit.

The session kicked off pretty well, with me just messing around. Soon enough, I hit a new trick: sailing illusion! So like pixie omellette. I ended up hitting it 3 times, getting it undeniably clean at least twice. Really fun trick.

I decided I'm going to do the same Shred30 at CSS that I planned for the Rochester jam. Like Rochester, my goal is to set a new personal best in comp, which means scoring over 206 points. That said, I'll be satisfied with any score over 200. Depending how bad I'm hit by jet lag, and how much practice (if any) I get in Spain, this could be a very tall order. But ultimately, I'm not going to worry about it too much. My best run-through of Shred30 was short, but very sweet. I hit 24 contacts dropless, and then handcaught the bag. Only in retrospect did I realize how few contacts that was... had it been in comp, I'm pretty sure I could have stuck in at least 6-8 more contacts. That's the advantage of having a counter do a countdown. In any case, 24 contacts, 0 drops, all uniques, with a 3.875 ratio would get me 186 points! Even if I filled the remaning time with non-unique BOPs, that'd still put me near my personal best.

I also messed around with some Sick3s. I didn't prepare anything for Rochester, but still managed a nice combo, but for CSS I'd like to have something ready. I hit a couple nice Sick3s yesterday. I hit my Worlds05 combo (ewalk-fog-toebius) once, and I also hit alpine leg-fog-paradon swirl for my first time.

Mostly though I just played for fun. Pixie diving mirage to alpine smear. Flurry bsos a couple times. Food bsos, with both foods coming midstring (like, the 5th trick and the 9th trick). I also ducked a sailing set, but couldn't hit anything out of it, and subsequent attempts were fruitless.

Overall, it just felt really nice to play again. The sick3 and Shred30 run throughs were also promising, and the flukey ducked sailing set reminded me that my body is often capable of a lot more than I think it is.

Lately it seems like I keep leaving out highlights from my blog. For example, 2 sessions ago, one of the things I was most stoked about was hitting flip flurry midstring for my first time. But I left it out of the recap. And the last session I blogged, I hit pixie ducking osis and blurry whirl bs in os, but left it out of the blog. That's particularly weird, considering there were very few highlights. I think I'm getting senile waaaay ahead of time.

I spent almost all of yesterday working on a job app, so by the time I finished, the sun was already setting. Normally, I hate racing against time, but I figured it'd be good to get some adds on the shoes, even if it wasn't much. I ended up regretting it. I think the problem was that I made surprising progress initially, which unrealistically raised my expectations, and I ended up getting frustrated that the sun was down. My mental game wasn't very good this session.

Due to the lack of time, I mostly worked on Shred30 and Big3. Other than that, the only notable run I hit had nuke ss osis (not crispy pdx flux) and blur-dod both bs in os. I had a couple good run-throughs of Shred30, and I managed to hit both of my Sick 3 combos at least once.

In bad news, the toe flap on my g-units came loose again. Despite the G-Units' superiority to lavers in most respects, I think that the structure of the material on the toe box is a major disadvantage. Granted, the shoe wasn't built to have the leather flap on the toe cut off. But even on my perfectly modded pair, the material is coming off. I'll try and stitch it up today. I also hope to get in another shred, since yesterday's left a bad taste in my mouth.

Yea Chris Dean was telling me about how the material is very delicate on the G6s. He said he found a way to reinforce the material. Hes actually resurecting an old pair, and im trading my climas for them. You should talk to him about his reinforcement techniques. Hes the most experienced G6 modder i know.

Hm, thanks for the tip Josh.

Yesterday I decided to experiment with several repair techniques, cause my original pair of g-units were so badly damaged, I was ready to throw them away. Fusing strips don't really work, but crazy glue showed lots of promise. My new pair of G6s had a bit of damage developing in the toe, with the material coming loose, so I stitched it back on, and then reinforced with crazy glue. I'll let y'all know how it turns out.

I went out to the basketball courts for a shred today (January 26th, 06). My basketball skills were notably weak today, which meant I spent most of my time skooling legball. I don't know what was wrong with me today basketball wise. I had no trouble faking out the invisible defenders, but the invisible shotblockers were on point.

I played in my repaired g-units, which still need some modification. One of my repairs bit into my right foot a bit, and my left sock got a hole in the big toe, so both of these factors kind of threw me off balance. I spent most of the session just practicing for CSS, so the only cool new combos that I landed today was flurry-pixie grifter. Felt like a pretty mean tripless combo.

CSS practice went pretty well. I hit ewalk-fog-toebius first try, and the dexes on the frantic set were superdeep. I love that feeling, when you can actually see how clean you are hitting a trick, like in slow-mo. I also hit alpine leg-fog-paradon swirl-ducking butterfly-blur-dimwalk-blurry whirl-osis-infinity-other blurry whirl. I hit that sick 3 a couple times, and got good runs off them.

Shred30 practice went OK. Had 2 good run throughs, which I would have felt OK doing in comp. I'm using my mini-Abshire to practice, which is fine while I'm playing, but sometimes it's hard for me to handcatch or to pick up. That can be kinda frustrating. Shred30 is becoming more automatic, and I'm becoming more conscious of where to breathe, and how to adjust on the fly. For example, my tenth contact is pdlo, but if I don't have the control for it, I can change it to pdx mirage, and then make my 22nd move (originally pdx mirage) into a pdlo, to recover.

In a non-footbag note, last night I played a Blitz Chess tournament. I played seven 5-minute games. I played OK, but I only won 3 games: all against lower rated players. Still, one of the highlights was meeting a guy called "Veikko."

Me: "Nice to meet you Veikko. Are you Finnish?"
Veikko: 8O 8O 8O "Uh, yeah. How did you know?"
Me: "Well, you DO have two Ks next to each other in your name."

 That may have been the tourney highlight for me.
