The toxicity of lead shot

I know that lead is toxic for kids. But is lead shot in footbags really that toxic for adults? People use lead shot to hunt deer and whatever other animals (sorry pips and moxie), and a little of the lead lingers in the animal until they get it home at least.

I'm having a really hard time finding steel shot in any of the reloading stores or gunshops in my area. Or even steel plated for that matter. I'm going to continue to shop online, as well as do research into this topic. But if anyone else has information regarding this, it would be greatly appreciated. Lead shot makes an excellent filler for footbags because it is dense and small, so it gives an excellent weight without too much bulk. Combined with poly pellets especially.

Old school painters used to get really sick and die from inhaling lead paint fumes. Adults can get sick from it for sure. I don't know how sick you can get from handling lead shot though.

just wash your hands when you're done handling it, and if you can help it, don't actually touch the stuff, use a spoon or something instead of ur fingers.. just don't eat w /the spoon

haha dude we were talking about it being toxic for footbaggers using a footbag filled with lead shot. I'm not at all worried about handling it.

no way I don't think it's toxic for footbaggers - even if some does 'bleed' through and people handle the bag it should only be trace amounts.. but after handling a dirty footbag hand-washing is a pretty good and hygeinic idea anyhow. If you want some lead shot, my brother bought a ton of the stuff and is selling some off at the same price he paid. It took really long to find the stuff.

Josh, yeah I got a ton of places here that sell normal lead shot. I believe it's safe as well, and I'll use it to fill my bags. But I want to get more info before actually selling bags with it in there.

you can get copper plated...that should be enough to get rid of MOST fears...

There was a thread about this awhile ago...i forget who started it. He went as far as getting his lead count tested after he had been handleing lead shot for quite awhile. They weren't dangerously high or anything.

I think it only becomes a promblem if you ingest it somehow. Someone using a bag with lead shot should not have a problem with poisoning or anything. My Ilja has lead shot in it, and i kicked with that bag religiously for almost a year. I think im fine...i think i guess

oh yea, its not that lead is only toxic to children, its just that it takes a lot less lead for them to acquire posioning due to their pint sizedness.

I talked with a gunsmith [or whatever the hell he's called] about it. He told me lead is posionous, but I'd be okay if I just washed my hands after handling it.

My theory: wash your hands after handling lead & washing the bag

I broke open a 6 or 7 shotshell, but I thought I saw that the lead was soft, and they might fall apart through normal use. So I got some .177 BBs to use instead, their steel or copper coated, probably to light.

I wouldn't worry about any incidental skin contact after filling the bag, I might think about the filler because you will be kicking the bag close to your face and in the air you breathe. Is inhaling lead dust worse than touching it? Id' imagine.

Does the bag transfer particles into the air when you do ducks and stuff?

Compared to the lead exposure you would get from, the shooting range, for example, the bag filler is nothing. Wash your hands after use.

I don't really know how much of a threat lead-filler would be to us. I don't feel 100% comfortable using it (, though I do) because: one day, if I sell a bag to a guy who has a dog, this dog might somehow get ahold of the footbag (to the guy's horror) and chew it open. This guy might also have a new baby sibling in the house who crawles over and eats some of the lead that is now strewn across the floor... now I'm responisible for the death of a baby!! I know it's not that likely, but the possiblity makes me uneasy. I'm getting bismuth though, so I don't think I'll ever sell a bag with lead to anybody... I wont have to worry

Who ever thought that babies would like eating paint chips?

The BB's I got are Zinc coated. I still think they are to light, but zinc shouldn't cut through tthe bag to fast, if at all.

yeah bbs aren't really the problem. I got some copper coated whatevers, the lead shot I extracted from actual 12 guage shotgun shells. That's where this whole thing comes from. But yeah, I better include a warning lable(sp) saying just like don't put your bag anywhere indoors. Cuz it's totally possible for a piece of lead shot to leak out, go onto the floor, and a baby grab it up and digest it. THEREFORE, I will not send my Valentine bag to Chrissy Fryer, because I am worried about her young shredita.

No, not at all. I was concurring with your point. I hadn't even thought of it actually before you mentioned it. This thread has promoted many good thoughts on the topic. I was just mentioning that I'd be worried about sending a bag with lead to someone with a child. I actually made Chrissy a bag that's lead-free last night after I read your post.
