Footbag in Hawaii?

Hey everyone,

it's been pretty lonely around here so I'm going to try and spread footbag as much as I can. I already got a few people interested but they just wanted to do something when they are bored, not as a sport so they stopped... Currently, my father has connections with a t.v station (it is a small local channel though) and I will be making a video on footbag and they will air it weekly (it can be 1-30 minutes long, doesn't have to be a long show). I' am thinking of making posters for starting a club to post in all the towns, but a lot of people that I told my lavers were about $50 and my footbag about $30. They went crazy about what a waste of money on a stupid "hacky sack"... Hawaii isn't a rich place, a lot of people don't have a lot of money..

So I'm just worried that they might not want to join or something.. But I'll try.. I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions? Like what to put on the poster or in the video. Perhaps someone could let me use some of thier footage so I can show cool tricks, I'm not too good so it wouldn't be too interesting.. Hopefully, if i do get more shredders, I can get a fundraiser at our local market and maybe get money for equipment.. Maybe I can even sell footbags since I sew! Just cheap 4 panels or something, or give them away if it takes a short time to make..to get people interested. Well if you have any ideas or suggestions, please, please post it! Thanks

If it's the money people are worried about you can get lavers off ebay for a bit cheeper then 50 dollars I think, I'm not sure how much cheeper though. Also use Mr. Sandmans to start with cause they're only like 5 dollars. Both of those together could probably bring startup cast to more like 50 then 80.

Definitely make the effort with Mr. Sandbags or bags you've sewn yourself. Footage and strutting your game helps a whole lot as well. The most important thing is just to get active and be optomistic about this sport.

I found that using the small booklet that's provided with Mr. Sandbags from freedomfootbags helped a whole lot in spreading the news. It's a pretty quick tutorial with step-by-step instructions that make most moves just plain easy. Passing those around for starters brings the crowds a little bit closer to you and starting an organization of players (who are serious of course).

try to mention itsa fun way to get and stay in shape cause that seems to be the big thing with people stayin in shpae so try to tlak about that

You can mention that, don't don't emphisise it. Teens and young adults arn't too too concerned about staying in shape IMO

It's Hawaii. i think most people there are in great shape already.

i wouldn't try to rush it. Like everyone else is saying, get a bunch of mr. sandmans. Mabey like 10-15 and give them away or sell them to interested people. If they become interested in it, then tip them on to lavers. If you tell them how much everything costs off the bat, u might scare people who potentially could get into it.

I never considered buying lavers and a good 32 panel until i really wanted improve my abilities. So don't stress that u have to have lavers and a 32 panel.

I am thinking of going to Hawaii this May Firstish.
Jim and I were gunna do some street buscing in Awahu? the one with Ki Ki and Honolulu on it. Auahu? I don't know. But yeah, you seriously have a TV show coming Up

Wow, I can't believe this. This could be perfect. I sell cheap Lavers and Footbags. $30 plus shipping and $5 each footbag.

I don't have the larger shoe sizes right now but I have about 20 pair of Rods for $30 each and they are the cloth striped kind. The best for Shred.

Thanks for replying everyone! (I won't edit that post then..). your ideas helped me a lot. I stayed up till 10 writing ideas and posters.. I like the idea of getting a lot of mr's and handing them out, but i have no money..thats why i want a fundraiser, maybe sell..cookies? I don't know..juggling balls..? I'll think of something.. I'll try to get more booklets andcopy them to give out.. I have three mr's so i could let people use them but not keep them..then get them interested in to buying thier own.. I'll be going to a specific spot where i'll set up a little booth, i'll shred and have a basket full of footbags and signs, I've drawn crowds before but didn't want them to play with my 32 panel so yeah..if they play with footbags i made then hopefully they'll ask for more info!!!Cool! You might come to Hawaii SOL (shredonlawn..) ..too bad it's on Oahu.. (not Auahu..hehe). The t.v show isn't something I should be getting too excited about..its a small channel..te quality is bad but it's a lot better than nothing.. I just found out that the show has to be 28 minutes long..so I'll have to extend it with other things..
Hmmm, $30 ain't bad for shoes, the twill kind? I'm size 13-14 so I can't wear the small sizes

I won't be able to work on the show till February when a friend of ours will be filming, my brothers the producer of the network too

I'll try to sew like 20 footbags, just for kicks and stalls and some dex's.. I found out at my other brother's college, 50 copies of one page is 7 cents each..so..7 x 50...$7.00? That isn't so bad. I can post them all over Hawaii

I'll swim to each island!!

If I get more people interested (hopefully!!!) then I'll definitely tell them about you and maybe can mod their shoes for them!! I love moddin'.....

-what is footbag

-state of footbag around the world today

-history of footbag if you know any

-difference between a kick and a delay

-demos of all basic kicks
demos of all basic stalls (inside, outside, cliper, toe, heel, sole)
-stress importance of learning the basics first, practicing everything using both feet. Footbag is a sport requiring ambidexterity, unlike most major sports today, which increases the difficulty and appeal.

- demos of simple 1 add drills:
toe>op toe repeat for 6 contacts
tinside>inside rpt
inside>outside rpt
outside>outside rpt
tow>inside>inside> toe

-introduce 2 add moves individually

- 2 add drills:
ATW in >ATW out (bs)
Pixie>mirage>pixie>mirage
ATW>pixie>ATW>pixie
Legover>legover rpt
pixie>pixie rpt
legover>mirage>legover>mirage
consec clippers (bs)
clip>op clip back and forth many times
clipper set mirage>op clipper set mirage
etc etc.

-Explain the concept of "shred." You may have ideas of what to do in your head but when you shred, the moves you hit are pretty much coming from right off the top of your head, meaning that they are not choreographed. It is constant improvisation, similar to freestyle rapping.

-Bust some shred, showing a great variety of moves and concepts

-Have a question and answer period, where you pretend as if people have written in to you to ask questions. These "questions" would be frequently asked questions that you would already be prepared to answer. For example: "What if my ankle cant get flat enough to hit a clipper?" (answer: show some stretches, practice makes perfect, show that you dont need a perfectly flat surface to hit a clipper, just good form) or "When Im trying to stall, the bag hits my foot and bounces off, almost like when Im kicking. What do I do?" (answer: try to cushion the bag when you are ccatching it, like you're catching an egg and you dont want it to break. You need to lower your leg at the knee.)

-Show pertinent information about footbag, important websites, phone number of TV station for people to contact you, your own information if you want people to contact you, where you normally kick, etc.

I'm going to work on questions now.. and good small strings.. I was working on whirls and swirls just an hour ago and thought that they might be a really cool tricks to see. But they are tricks to learn when you get better.. Thanks again!

A shred event in Hawaii would be sick. I know it's hard, and you'd need a lot of help, but it's something to think about down the road.
