CANADIAN FOOTBAG CHAMPIONSHIPS

This is not an announcement of anything that exists yet, I just wanted to toss around the idea of the possibility of an event like this with the community.

I havn't heard any talk about this event yet but I think it is something that should definitely exist.

I am willing to volunteer to put alot of time and effort into making something like this happen but I would need lots of help.

I am picturing a BIG event with as many players from all across Canada coming to throw down.

So who is interested in this?

(I am not looking to start organizing anything yet, I just want to bounce around ideas regarding location and timing and so on to see who is interested in being involved)

I would almost certainly make it to a Canadian Footbag Championships if it were held. I would also do as much as I can to help make it happen, but considering that I don't live anywhere near any major Canadian shred scene, I can't say exactly what that might be.

A project I feel is worth considering alongside an annual national tournament is establishing a CFPA of sorts. Such an organization would go a long way towards legitimizing an official national level competition.

One thing I'll mention is that I like the idea of a Nationals tournament being winter based (eventually, I mean, it'd be swell to have an 06 championship this summer), in order to stagger it with the Euros and Worlds. Makes no sense to have what Canadian players might consider the three most important tournaments of the year in the same month.

I thought there used to be Candian Footbag Championships held out west though...??

At any rate, I'd help out for sure.

I have a question for ya Tom (and anyone): Are you thinking it should be the Canadian International Footbag Championships, meaning that anyone from anywhere could compete, or are you thinking that the competition should be strictly for Canadians (but others could still come just to play)? I kinda like the idea of only Canadians competing, simply because I don't think it has ever been done... but also because I was once told that at other national championships, when people from other countries win, they aren't actually considered the National Champion. So it really doesn't make sense to me that they would compete at all...

Let me know what you think.

I hadn't really put too much thought into that aspect yet Camille.

I think it would be great to have a competition among canadians, the non-canadians could come and compete and the canadian rankings will just not include them.

I think the opportunity to compete would draw more people from the surrounding areas (aka yankees) and make this a bigger/badasser event.

I want this to be huge and crazy like euro tournaments!

Well, Edmonton *was* planning the Canada Cup of Footbag, incorporating both freestyle and net...but with Worlds being pushed back, and Ben having to push forward, it looks like it may be a strictly net event.

It's still up in the air as to what's going to happen, but as far as I know, we were looking at multi-thousand dollar sponsorship.

Obviously I am HUGELY in support of this idea, and am willing to spend as much time as I can to get this moving. Whatever I can do to help, let me know. Have it in Toronto. Make it AWESOMESMFOSEMFSOM!!!

Location will be a really important issue to sort out.

It will determine the types of accomodations, venue, accessibility, apres shred activities, transportation and atmosphere.

I am going to be in Kingston for at least another year, after I graduate I am staying here to work and make money and snuggle Peng.

I don't think a small city like Kingston or Mississauga would be any good for this.

I am torn because I want to play a big hands on role in organising this, like I did with KICKASS, but I don't want to be at the disadvantage of having to do it from afar, like GLASS.

I think Toronto is a good candidate for a big tourny and it isn't extremely far from me, like say.. Vancouver or Halifax, and it is a large city with well established (and somewhat simple) public transit.

Also, Toronto is accessible for lots of different groups of shredders.

I would expect this to be attended by every shredder in a 10 hour drive radius. That means all the Ontarians, New Yorkers, Quebecors, New Jerseyites, Illanoisians, ..those other surrounding states, etc.

I want this to be big!

Yeah I guess Toronto is the best place, it is most central....

Though it would probably be good for it to change locations year after year, spread it out around the country.

So... if it's Toronto I guess I'll have to play a big part in organizing...

Winter succkkkkkkks though... School, weather... blah...

It's pretty hard to find an affordable venue in Toronto in the winter. Perhaps we could score a hotel activity room or something like Tom did with KICKASS. Or maybe one of the universities would be willing to rent us atheletic space. Just some ideas, but to be honest, I tried a lot of places for GLASS, and it is REALLY difficult to convince people in this city to rent space to us ("What the fuck is footbag?").

I would try my hardest though. And it would probably be easier this time around... "The Canadian Footbag Championships" sounds a just a bit more credible than "GLASS".

I also agree that it's 9000% less lame than the cup thing...

Venue's might come a lot cheaper if they were able to collect half of their price as a tax deduction. Sponsorships as well, both minor and major. Like you said, the phrase "Canadian Footbag Championships" lends a lot of credability, but even moreso if the people asking for support are representatives of a nationally registered atheletic association. I like "tax deductible" a lot better than the answers we've been using for "what the fuck is footbag?".

I realise that this would be a hassle to set up, and potentially an even bigger hassle to run, but the plain truth is that this is a necessary step towards legitemizing the sport in the public eye, and it will happen eventually. The only question is whether we're capable of doing it now. I think we are so long as it's kept simple, and we limit our aims (for the time being) to sanctioning events and organising cash flow.

I think setting up some sort of Canadian Footbag Association is a very important and necessary step before thinking of holding a national championship.

Alberta already has a provincial footbag association... Which province will be next to jump on the bandwagon?

hey tom, did you by chance notice that you listed only 2 canadian provinces there?? and 3 us states. does any one else think it's retarded to be talking about american attendance at a canadian national championship? priorities should probably be making sure the canadian contingent is large.

I agree with rory that creating a national footbag organization is the most important thing for the canadian scene right now. some one has to be able to recognize the event, right? that way we don't have The Canada Cup and the Canadian Nationals both proclaiming that so and so is the national champ. Plus it would be able to move around if different clubs bid for the event and stuff.

regardless of where it is i wanna spin at the after party. perhaps a tag off thing with QPhox?

I was just making the point that since it will be a big sweet event *any* player that can make it should make it.

There is some amazing talent in Canada, I would want all the Canadian BAP players to come (Seb, Yax, Nick, Allan, Jorden, Dylan etc) and all the top up and comers, which I know there are alot of!

This could be so great, we should centralize our efforts and form one 'team' that is going to make it happen, Andrew makes a good point that we have more than one of these at a time and claim more than one champ.

I think Ontario will have a provincial footbag association soon too.

I could be mistaken, but I don't think provincial associations are necessary for the purpose of a national association, and less so for a national competition.

In order for a national event to be legitimate the association needs to be built first, and it has to accept and review bids from whatever members care to make them. If Edmonton, with it's pre-existing Canada Cup plans, is in a position to make the strongest bid, it should indeed host.

I've begun drafting some governing documents for a possible national association, and should be able to post them within a day or two. In case everybody can't tell, I'd really like to see this happen.
