Ankle Popping
Ankle Popping
Last night I learned swirl on my flipside and had to try it a bunch of times before hitting it.
The repeated motion seems to have messed up my ankle. . . or maybe it was messed up before. When I went into the clipper stall my ankle would crack like when you crack your knuckes.
In the past I've had this problem with my wrist. When I shake peoples hands my wrist often cracks. I was wondering if this was a serious problem or just something that will go away.
Any suggestions?[/quote]

before shred I would roll your foot in circles to work the ankle. Go both ways with it, and afterwards do some light stretching on the ankle. That should loosen them up a bit and maybe even stop the popping and cracking. As long as it doesn't hurt it is probably ok, my ankles pop from time to time, but usually only if I haven't stretched them for a while.

This won't help you, but if someone else gives you some advice, maybe I can benefit from it too. My good ankle cracks any time I turn it with pressure on it. For example, if I put the outside of my foot (mostly the toe) on the ground and grind my foot, pushing my heel to the ground, my ankle pops. It will do this no matter how many times in a row I do it. It never hurts, but I'm curious to know it I have a problem too @_____@
EDIT: Better example -- if I did what James suggested, my ankle would crack every time I "rolled" it.

My ankle does the same thing. It has since a while after I started skating (about 10 years ago) and it's never been a problem. I kinda like the way it feels. My wrists do the same thing. But if it is a serious problem I'd like to know also.

my ankles pop all the time. I could be walking to class or running and my ankles will pop, both of them. Its been like this for close to 6 years now. But my ankles don't hurt when it happens. Sometimes while sitting down I'll stretch and I would have to force my ankle to pop, then it hurts.

Ankle bone's connected to the... knee bone
Knee bone's connected to the... etc. bone
My right ankle cracks all the time but never hurts, just like the rest of you. I can do it at will, it has never gotten worse, but the one time it was better was when I stopped playing footbag for two weeks and I was crosstraining extensively every day.
I went to see a physical therapist a while ago to look into a persistently tight hip flexor and she pointed out that one of my legs is a tad longer than they other. On the side with the tight hip flexor my ankle cracks. I hypothesize that the two are related. I don't think it's a serious problem.

my right ankle pops all the time. when im sitting in class I will tuck my right leg behind my left( like a left side clipper) and move my foot up and down. When I do this my ankle goes pop pop pop pop, over and over. I dont think it is really that serious, its just gas bieng released, not your bones cracking.

well... ive had too much expierence here i suppose. as a skater, and an idiot, ive broken/fractured both my wrists and ankles multiple times, respecitvely.... ive been to the doc for both wrists, and one ankle... he says artritis will set in eventually, but for now, ill be okay... something about the cartilige... like my ligaments and tendons have stretched/ripped, and now shift when i move, making them pop. so now ive slowed down skating, and spend way more time playing footbag... im sore about the same, but that'll ease with time.
as far as treatment, stretch out and take pills, is what i was told... but dont
do the pills... what i had to do was walk on an incline, stretch on a wedge (toes going upward), and use weights and that thing with a ball and balance ledge... n roll around.

Any of you guys ever try taking the joint supplement Glucosamine/Chondroitin? When i was doing kung fu i constantly had knee and ankle pain from jumping and landing after doing a spinning kick in the air or something so obviously i did alot of twisting and impacting of certain joints. Not only that but kicking drills are hard on joints as well, expecially when you're not kicking a target. Slightly hyper-extended my left knee once while doing that because i was extremely tired already so my kicks were getting sloppy.
But anyways, i started taking the stuff and it's seemed to have helped with joints that had been giving me trouble. It gives you a long term pain-killing effect you don't get with aspirin or ibuprofen. It's supposed to help lubricate and even rebuild cartiledge, though it hasn't been proven by the FDA. One important note if you decide you want to take it though... If you're allergic to shellfish DO NOT TRY IT. It's made from the shells of crabs apparently.
Read up on it, alot of people are starting to use it and have had pretty good experiences with it. A big drawback though is that it's like 65 dollars a bottle for maybe 80 pills and you're supposed to take 3 of them a day. It's rough on the wallet for sure, but considering i'm into rock climbing, martial arts, and now probably getting back into doing alot of footbagging, it's well worth it for me. And it doesn't have the long term side effects of ibuprofen or aspirin.

I've been taking glucosamine/chondroitin the whole time I've been playing footbag, honestly, it doesn't do that much but help the joints feel a bit more limber. A well exercised body will repair cartilage at an accelerated rate compared to a couch potato.. it's more necessary for people who are well into aging. The stuff is expensive.

I thought so too, but have you tried not taking it for awhile? I definitly felt the difference. It makes twisting and impacting not hurt your joints so much. It isn't some miracle drug, but it works good enough for me. I figure if i keep taking it, my joints will hopefully stay healthier longer.hackeysnacker wrote:I've been taking glucosamine/chondroitin the whole time I've been playing footbag, honestly, it doesn't do that much but help the joints feel a bit more limber.
