what is that supposed to mean?

edit: sorry I know what it's supposed to mean. I think if I commented on a video of a really awesome shredder and said "New York World Trade Centre. Sick" - I'd insult a lot of people. 80,000 civillians died in the Hiroshima bombing including some of my relatives. I find it a bit offensive to use such an attack as a description for something percieved as excellent.

Nuclear -> Hiroshima. Not in particularly good taste, but along the same lines we could get offended by the name nuclear itself, or atomic. That'd be just plain silly, no?

Getting offended by the words "atomic" and "nuclear" would indeed be silly.

Getting offended when somebody compliments a string with nuclear tricks by saying "Hiroshima" is not. It's very justified to be offended by such a callous belittlement of one of the most horrific war crimes in history.

It's not fair to compare Fletcher's insensitive comment with getting upset with simple words like "nuclear." That's a completely flawed comparison, and I resent it. The words "nuclear" and "atomic" are used in physics and engineering, whereas "Hiroshima" in this context only has one meaning, and it's offensive. If somebody proposed naming a set "jew holocaust," people would be right to condemn it, cause it has no other meanings.

The "atomic" set comes from the trick "atom smasher." This does not have a bellicose meaning. The set name originally carried no war-like connotations. Nuclear evolved from atomic. Because of this, there was no opposition to its name, and that's why nobody gets offended by the use of words like "atomic" and "nuclear." I hope you can see the difference between these words, and "Hiroshima" in this context.

Maybe so, but the real question is why you are so rudely demanding an 'explanation" or an apology from someone who didnt realize that he would be offending his audience. Isn't it enough to know that he may feel remorse because of the way people have bashed him in this thread? Isn't it enough to simply state that his comment was offensive? There needs to be no apology or explanation for the comment. We all know why he said it- it was a play on words, it was witty, he was trying to be funny (maybe at the exclusion of taste, but that is beside the point) . If he does it again, then he's dumb because now he knows people will take offense. He doesn't need to be raked over the coals.

I dunno, I can see some parallels....I mean, that string was pretty devastating.

..Besides, in Fletcher's defense, he was homeschooled and therefore totally missed the socialization process. :P

Was I really being "so rude?" I think modified deserves an explanation, if not an apology. I don't think my request for an explanation is "the real question" at all.

Just because he didn't realize he was being offensive, doesn't excuse the fact that he was offensive. If I make an anti-semitic joke amongst my friends, and later find out one of them is jewish, doesn't excuse me just because I didn't know there was a jew present.
Senor Grommet wrote: Isn't it enough to know that he may feel remorse because of the way people have bashed him in this thread? .
No, quite frankly, it is not enough. He "may" feel remorse. He "may" not. Until he expresses that remorse, there's no way for the offended parties to know. And he shouldn't feel remorse due to our responses, he should feel remorse for making an offensive comment. If I went on a pro-nazi forum and made pro-nazi statements, nobody would censure me. People would applaud me. Does that mean I shouldn't feel remorse?

I hope Fletcher feels remorse because what he said was offensive. Whether modified condones or applauds his behavior should have no bearing on whether or not he feels remorse.

Senor Grommet wrote: Isn't it enough to simply state that his comment was offensive? .
In the case of a rape, do you think it's enough just for the rapist to be convicted? You don't think an apology has any healing value?

Personally, I'd like to know what Fletcher was thinking when he made his comment. And if he's sorry, I'd like to hear it.

Well I'm glad you feel that way, but you do not speak for everybody. It's my impression Fletcher is an American. How would you feel, if you lost your grandparents to the Holocaust, and then one of the German members of modified "complimented" some footbag combo with: "Sieg Heil. Nice Holocaust!"

Ok, I know this wasn't meant to be funny but I just smile when I read it.
Damn, let's just put the past in the past. But I agree, he should apologise.

Yo, don't let this argument turn into Tienemen Square or anything!

It's interesting how different people view tragedy though. And it's also interesting how careless the average person is with speech these days. I blame gangsta rap!

ie. 'Droppin bombs like Hiroshima'

Oh yeah, disgusting run too. Seriously, it's neat cuz I remember watching that Jorden vid and wishing Johnny would bust out. Glad I got my wish!
