Drilling vs Shreding

Post by BalinorNZ »

I have been thinking about the differance between stringing along to the beat and trying to hit your best and coolest combos, and doing the training and drills that enable you to shred the way you do.

I'm wondering what people find more enjoyable? Sure it's fun to be able to shred to the music and show off your stuff in a circle, trying to hit the biggest or longest combo you can, but what about the enjoyment gained from hitting a new move you have been schooling to hit, or breaking your infinity record! That is pretty fun to, conquroring yourself and creating new personal bests! Right?

What do you enjoy more?

I would also like to announce, this is the 1000th topic in General footbag, and no I did not just make it up so I could have the honour of beeing #1000 .

I love drilling because everytime i improve in a concept not only do i feel giid about my game but i feel more balanced and bothsided

but i love to also have a shred once in a while to put in those drilled components in runs etc..

I can't vote on that poll...

I'm in two minds. I love drilling, most of my footbag time is drilling. I play alone 9 times out of 10. I sort of default to drilling solo... even at jams after a couple of days I'll feel the itch to drill instead of shred... tis weird. I guess I get over strings because they start to all feel the same. Should get better soon, as I'm improving my string length :D bring on the variety baby.

What I love the most is when someone is shredding and they bust out some type of mirrored combo or a big like 3 contact combo and then do it bsos. That's kind of like drilling in shred though i guess. Haha.

When I play solo I'm terrible at letting any goals go and just shredding and hitting what comes to me, so I usually drill. When I play with people I shred however and hit much cooler runs. As for what I like to hit, I like hitting combos bsos, mirrored combos, and theme oriented runs.

Good God drilling is such a necessity to being good at footbag. I thought you just 'learned' a trick before playing this sport. Eh, I don't mind drilling anymore, I've gotten into the goal-accomplishment zone.

Skooling blur- 10 min of drilling a day.
Being able to show it off in a circle- Priceless.

drilling is fun for me becuase doing drills really makes me feel like i am improving my game. anything that is mirrored that i can repeat is always a good drill that i love to do.

but i think i like to shred more. i usually decide that im gonna try a certain trick and then hit a combo then try the trick midstring, then if i hit it i usually try to hit it on my other side. even tho most of the time im not even close becuase im so one sided. but thats where the drills come in handy.

Shredding in a circle, and showing the result of all the drilling I've been doing before hand. :D

you can't bust your shit in the circle unless you have done alot of drilling. learn to love drilling. but it;s more fun to bust out large.

I saw the title of this thread but didn't see 'Drilling vs. Shreding'

My mind read it as "Playing Alone Or Playing With Friends' In wich case I would say playing with friends is far more enjoyable for me. I guess footbag has always been a social thing for me, not about pushing my own limits.

drilling is what i like. shredding is good but drilling is better. New records and solid improvement, it is arousing.

Haha! That's gold

I am a bit of an attention seeker, so I like to shred in public and get peoples reactions from my strings (and I hate when people in the circle don't watch the other players!), but I am also really enjoying drilling at the moment, but with that enjoyment there is a lot of anger and frustration, I definatly get far more annoyed at myself when i'm trying to drill!

I never really hated the drilling and I think it is necessary to improve.

But showing off the good stuff is orgasmic.

Definitely shredding is way more fun. Drilling is more important.

I will hit drills, like x>y>rpt, but I almost never drill, say 100 spinning clippers in a row to improve them. I just can't stand doing that, it takes all the fun out of playing for me.

Yeah, it's weird because I never consciously notice myself drilling that much, it's usually mixed in with my shredding. Like I'll hit a nice run and then drop on a stupid trick get mad and drill that trick once or twice. Also it's kinda weird because I'm usually kicking with other people even when I drill. My favorite is definatly shredding though especially if it's to the music, that's the best feeling ever.

where does the drilling stop and shredding begin? it seems like it can't be completely divided, but just be at 2 different ends of the spectrum, and contrasted by how far in advance you know what moves your doing.

One of my favorite things to do in circles is just try to hit one of my big moves... so I guess it's not shredding or a drill?
