Philly Folk Fest - August 2006
Philly Folk Fest - August 2006
"The Philadelphia Folk Festival, one of the oldest active folk festivals, is a three-day extravaganza of traditional and contemporary folk music, dance, crafts, camping and children's activities. " (http://www.folkfest.org/PFF.php)
As it so happens, the Give and Take Jugglers are officially on the schedule. This is the same group that had Philly Footworks to the Friend's School for a few festivals >> John and Josh did demos on stage for them even.
Anyhow, me and my wife/kid are going to listen to the music and I figured I'd play a little while I'm there. I emailed the juggling group to see if I can play near/with them. I have a local player and his son coming with. Nothing much to it. If anyone wants to come too, post it here so I can get an idea of whether it's just the three of us.
edit: I'm tentatively planning on playing during the day on Saturday and maybe again on Sunday. I've heard the camping there is good times, so that's what I'd suggest to people coming in. Sorry, but I have no crash space to offer.
Thanks.

Holy shit, Congrat's on the lil'un!
I was thinking this idea sucks ass, that is, until I linked to the site. When I saw the man with the broom a hollerin' just so,.. It really spoke to me, that's all.
If this is the same weekend as Funtastik, I'll be at the Folk fest. No joke.

I talked to the man (David G.) that is in charge of the juggling group. Very nice guy. He's really excited to have us come and play informally in their general vicinity.
Let me just say that the playing conditions will not be prime. We'll probably be in a somewhat cramped area playing on grass. But it should be a fun atmosphere so I'd love to have a couple players that are near enough to make the trip. In other words, this isn't the Chilly Philly. Just a fun little no effort involved no promises thing that I'm going to.
Also, they're putting on shows/demonstrations throughout each day. He's asked to have one of our top players do a demo. Clavens, Flash, or Caleb are great choices there I would think. Or if Outsider makes it, that'd be really great too. So just keep that in mind.
Saturday and Sunday 11 - 4 are the target times. I'll bump this topic in a few months as a reminder.
Thanks

I was having a little trouble with their web-site, in a couple of different ways. Anyway, besides the camping fee, is there any other fee associated with attending this shindig? I didn't see a place on the web-site for ticket sales (other than the camping fee) but I am too suspicious to think that attendance is free.

Well, you know how it is. I've been to some music festivals that were free, I've been to some that charged a nominal fee ($15 bucks? chump change;) and I've been to some that wanted $60 bucks each day at the door, in addition to whatever over-priced under-cooked food they were serving inside. I think twice before spending $60 on music. I don't even need both hands to count the times I've paid that much or more for concert tickets, and in those circumstances I usually at least had a particular SEAT to call my own inside. I'm cheap, so sue me. Remember the X-Games in Philly? Of course you do. Remember what we paid to get in there? I'll remind you: Zero. Now that's my kind of festival!

Ha ha.. Gotta love it Jon. You seem to be confusing me with someone that is interested in figuring out logistics of an event. You've got the wrong guy. I couldn't give a rats a$$ about running an event at this point.
Just for giggles I asked... the juggling guy said we could get in free if we had players willing to put on a pre-screened demonstration. That is, if we had performers that could prove ahead of time that they're up to snuff, he'd add us to their group. If you're interested in this route, PM me and I'll give you his email address and you can settle the particulars. It sounds like they have prescheduled review time in March and at the end of this month.

I'll have the approx price soon. And let me reiterate>> I'm going to the event whether anyone else comes or not, I'm NOT planning an event, you all can come if you want to but don't gripe to me if it's not what you hoped for. In other words, you're on your own to make this fun or not for yourself. How's that for a disclaimer?

The guys says the price is something like $40 for an all day ticket, but he thinks there's a discount for purchasing the tickets ahead of time.
I guess the story is:
- If you're interested in coming, keep an eye on the folk fest website noted above for ticket info.
- If you're interested in going for free, you need to do a prefessional looking demo.. let me know and I'll hook you up with the guy's name so you can sort that out.
That's it. I'm done event planning
Edited on 2/18 >> I'm probably only going on Sunday
