Can Someone Tell me why we need a a federal governing body in canada? What purpose it will serve? Are any provincial associations going to report to it? What will its role in the development of footbag in canada be? Going to charge membership fees?

Those are maybe questions that would be more appropriate to discuss after a serious initiative has been made to create something? I mean, you can't make a decision about membership fees until you have an idea of costs, right?[/quote]

i think its the other way around. No point in incorporating unless you know what your purpose is. Besides to incorp, you would need bylaws and other things that clearly state alot of the points. And for anyone interested, the process here for a federal npo is:

-Registration of a non-profit at the fed OR prov level (doesnt matter)
-About $500
-Bylaws, an executive (board)

yes, its that simple. Took about 1 day of work to get the AFA (Alberta Footsports Assoc) up and running.

this can be done, the association at a federal level.
i mean, come on, with the amount of support this idea is getting from every footbag enthusiast that has been informed of this idea, and the willingness of people to do what they can in their own area, it is only a matter of time before the initiative is taken by a group of individuals to actually start doing all the officializing of this project.

it is seriously great how much support this idea continues to gain.

I don't mean to brag, but I am very responsible and organized(unfortunately the most organized footbagger in this city :?) , and I love footbag and this country. I am willing to help get a national thing going in any way I am allowed. Just tell me where to sign up. :)

I failed a bunch of high school courses mainly due to bad organization.

I don't think I'm much differently organized outside of school.

Written with Canada's RCAAA (registered canadian amateur athletic association) guidelines in mind.

Purpose:

1. To organize and promote growth of Footbag Freestyle and Footbag Net within Canada.
2. To act as Canadian representative to the International Footbag Players Association.
3. To develop and implement a certification program for freestyle judges.
4. To produce and make readily available the necessary educational and instructional material for the development of individual players, clubs, and regional associations.
5. To sanction and stage the annual Canadian Footbag Championships.
6. To provide needs-based relief to high performance athletes for the purpose of international competition.
7. To provide guidance and assistance for players running local and regional clubs.
8. To promote public awareness of the sport.

It's true that there would be little immediate tangible benefit to a federal governing body (aside from a legit Canadian Championship), but by putting a unified name on our collective efforts, it won't be long before we're in a position to command a little respect. The sooner we DO put a unified name on our efforts, the sooner they'll be recognised and rewarded (ie, gaining RCAAA charitable status).

My initial thought in terms of membership was that IFPA members who are Canadian residents would be voting members of the association. I think we can probably get away with mooching some web service from .org, so we shouldn't have any immediate need for any substancial cash flow.

Thoughts?

I like your outline, Colin. It seems you have the right idea to get things going, but what my question is, what can we put in place to get this going? I mean, we can yap all we want on modified, but if we really wanna get something going, we'll need to really sort out an actual ORGANIZED initiative, right? I dunno, maybe people who are interested in this idea, to a point where they're willing to take some time to discuss it in a little more of an in depth manner should post their emails so we can get some MSN conversations going or something? I dunno, I just would really like to see this lift off, and I think maybe the first step is trying to get some people who are dedicated to the idea of having an organization to get on the same page.

colin, i like your outline very much! well put, that pretty much sums up what i was thinking, minus freestyle judges, but that is AWESOME! i never would have though about certifying freestyle judges!!! so cool.

Regarding webspace, it's not too expensive. i'll have to ask erik about it.

It's a relief to get some enthusasm in here.

I've been picking through constitutions/by-laws of some other organisations (OCUA, Judo Canada, Mun Math and Stats Society (haha)), and I'm starting to get a sense of what needs to be said and done in them. Dan rightly mentioned that this thread isn't the best place for this kind of discussion - I have asked for a Canadian subforum in the 'National Associations' board at .ORG. I know most of us aren't regular users of .org's board, but I think that it's the best place for this type of discussion. It'll make things easy to have a relatively quiet forum where all the topics are... on topic. I'll have a tentative constitution ready within a couple of days (I said that several days ago, but it's at least closer to true now) for posting. Hopefully the new board will be running by then, and you can all tell me how wrong I've got it in an organised fashion.

ben, man don't think that the community doesn't respect net players! i have huge respect for them and for that element of the sport (regardless of what jon has to say  ). i think it was said to be "shredders" simply because spikers just aren't as high profile on the internet (as far as i can tell).

to tom and seath, although this is the journeys to tournies section, perhaps a different thread would be a better place for making shred plans? :P

edit: colin, really looking forward to that constitution, and well done for taking on the task. i'm looking forward to reading and reviewing the document. we'll have to get a big group discussion going on at some point.
