Competing in Footbag
Competing in Footbag
So I know footbag isn't the most competitive sport in the world but I think it's so much fun to compete. When I first started playing I was almost scared to admit that. You weren't supposed to want to win in footbag. Just show up and kick.
Do the majority of players now still just want to come to comps and hang out? Or do you guys have fun competing?

I used to compete in freestyle events. But I hardly practice/drill so I never did well. If I ever got hardcore into freestyle again and actually practiced and felt like I could hang with the other competitors I might compete. Maybe.
Sometimes entry fees can be a factor. Not that I don't want to support the event, but there are times when money can be tight.
I'm totaly down for competing in 4 square!

I like to compete but I get really freaked out beforehand. This causes my performance to decrease. Its weird really, i get chills, my legs feel weak, and sometimes my mind goes blank. But once i hit my first few tricks, a rhythm develops . . . hopefully.

Events aren't always strictly for competitors. As Caleb mentioned players just come to watch and hang out. It's a great opportunity to meet new people with the same interests, maybe buy footbag related products, or pick up a new trick or two. There are usually other people within your skill level that you can shred with if you don't want to kick with the more advanced players. On the other hand you would be surprised how helpful the more advanced (or any) player can be if you ask for tips.Caleb wrote:...come to comps and hang out?

yeah man...when i went to matt's tourney in rochester, for me i would say the like 8 hours of circle freestyling with 10 different circles was at least 70% of the fun of the tourney, aside from the 2 hours of competing. but that was cool too, even though i myself got nervous and fucked up. but still fun

I go to events for the shred. For the mates. For the footbag gear. For the tips and advice. Competing is fun too, both because you're putting on a performance, it's a buzz, and winning is nice too. But even if there was no comp, I would still go. Comp's just make it better
I'm really keen to perform a choreographed routine... I've only competed once before, and I was pretty unsure of my ability. It turned out I was under estimating myself, AND I played the best that day that I had ever played. So I was really disappointed I hadn't choreographed. I wasn't putting on a real performance, and that's what I'm looking forward to next time. Actually performing.

haha, competing is pointless to me as the same 3 people are at the top everytime. I'm not saying I would only compete if I could win, it's just a waste of people's time to make them watch me shred and totally choke, then watch lon do a dropless shred30 into penske hitting whirlygig>whirlwind>mullet.
I'll save the competetion for the *good* players

Yeah, I haven't really felt the desire to compete yet simply because I don't have very much in the way of styley links, or a good trick arsenal. I've been to two tourneys and competed at neither. However, I had a buttload of fun. I hope to compete down the line, though.

When i go to events, I'm always there for the community, the gear (bags and shoes) and the fun circle kicking/freestyle that i get to witness there. I love the advice I get from other players and whatever I can learn from other people just by watching them. I mean, I get to meet some of the greatest people on events right there personally, and some day I wish to be up to their level in a style of my own. Really, some day, I'd like to compete to strut my stuff. It's going to be a nervous trek, though, like some people have noted.
Plus, the after parties in some of these events are always keen.

i like to compete, but really it's mostly against my self. i just try to do better than the last event. fewer drops, higher scores, making the next round. i don't really care how any one else does, as in it doesn't effect me if they do well or poorly, i don't care of some one "beats me" just so long as i beat my old scores. i'm more focused on my own performance. the thing that gets to me the most is the crowd, but even now, after the finals at footjam, the crowds don't bug me as much. i just wish i was in a condition to compete

Yeh i dont enjoy competing at all, i get a little nervous beforehand but mostly its because i always fuck up. But i tend to compete anyway because a) Australia needs every competitor it can get to give the events more credibility or b) I feel obligated to (like when i was in Europe - cant miss those opportunities!)

I tend to get nervous as well, but half the time it's all pyschological. If you think you are going to fuck up, you will get nervous and fuck up. If you go into the competition not thinking about who you are up against and with your mind set on yourself and your bag, it will put you more at ease.

I used to go to just shred and hang out afterwards. Now, if I go to any events again, I would say I would only go to events where there's no competition. At many comps, some of the players I want to shred with don't even circle play much because they're saving themselves for competition. Plus, just when all the circles are really roaring, everyone has to stop to watch a handful of people compete. And although I can appreciate that people are trying hard, in reality only 2-3 people at most comps have a routine or shred that's really worthy. It's just more fun at jams where everyone just shreds in my opinion.
