Discuss your gear and stitching and shoe modification in here.

Is lead shot really that toxic for adults or kids over 10?

BE ON ALERT....THIS IS A DOUBLE POST...IF THIS WERE AN ACTUA

Post by shredzilla »

Oh well, I could edit but this warrants a new post. Got some steel shot today. It's about the same size as the lead, but a tiny bit bigger. I think it may be a good filler and I'll keep ya posted. It's not stainless steel though. I guess that would be the next step. BUT in all honesty one of the properties I like about the fact that it's not stainless, is the 'softness' of the alloy allows it to grip slightly better as opposed to rolling like a BB or a ball bearing would. I'm kinda psyched to try it out.

uhm.i use lead too.and i cant figure out anything else.plus copper coated stuff isnt available here.

and for all you,you breathe it in guys.think about it.when you walk around the street there is so much radiation from dangerous stuff...plus,you will ahve to work with much, realy much lead to get realy sick.and you will have to breathe in the steam that it exposes when you melt it...so...i think lead in footbags isnt that big deal.just dont eat your bags!

but as soon as i find some alternative filling i will change from lead to it...
come get your mÃcrÖ¶ bag today

ok, I will put this thread to rest. Being that I am a chemistry student, I work with lead quite a bit. Lead is not really dangerous to your health. Those that contracted poisining years ago had ingested a great deal of lead which is the main thing I would worry about, ingestion of a great deal of it will lead to poisining.

Even if a child were to eat a peice of lead, it would not harm them in the slightest. It's not enough, your body will filter it out. Those of you worried about inhaling it while kicking are also very paranoid, that is way too trace to have any effect on you over any amount of time. You need a lot of lead in a relativly short period of time to notice any ill effects.

That being said--lead is safe for bags, not using it is probably a hinderance more than anything. Don't be afraid of it, the chances of lead poisining becoming a problem are slim to none and slim just packed it's bags and left town.

Why do you think that?

because the trace ammount you would recieve in handling or kicking a bag would be very little. There is lead in the air we breathe. The body is able to deal with trace amounts over time, it is the bigger concentrations over shorter periods of time that cause the poisining.

Lead will be transported to your bones for example. There it will stay for a long time.

You won't notice anything until you have to suffer severe consequences.

That is critical because only a small amount of too much lead in your regular intake will raise your body lead level and can cause major problems when the overall amount passes its critical border.

You are right by telling that you only notice lead poisining with a high amount of intake.

Unfortunately recognition and dangerousness are not the same when it comes to heavy metals.

You are right when you point out that you have to consider if the lead will get into your body or not ( often the metal will only harm when it is in some kind of chemical connection to be able to pass some frontiers i.e. and is able to make its way into your brain)

I cannot rate the dangerousness of playing with a leadfilled footbag, I guess it is not that dangerous - I played with leadfilled footbags as well, but otherwise it is not that harmful like it was pointed out here.

while I agree, the fact is the body can deal with trace amounts of toxic substances. for instance the Mercury in fish these days. Mercury levels found in fish are risising though it's not particularly dangerous for us to consume because the body can deal with the trace amounts. It is the same case for lead.
