Best Footbag Advice

Post by shredzilla »

What advice has been the most valuable to you as a player? I've gotten lots of tips here and there on proper form and stuff, but the best advice was this:

"If it looks like they've done a move 1,000 times, it means they've done it 10,000 times." -Nate Linscott

That's always kinda kept me going, because there have been times where I thought a move might be too hard, or impossible to hit consistantly, etc. But when I remind myself of that, it reassures me that any move is executable, by any given player. You just need to hit it enough times to make it second nature.

What's the best advice you've gotten from a footbag player who was better than you? How did it impact your game?

Sunil Jani giving me the facts on paradox. And I'm amazed it never occurred to me.

-Every paradox move needs to be set straight up. Not across your body. (Some people think pdx whirls are easier if you arch them across your body)
-One reason paradox moves can be grouped together is because with every one, when you set you need to immediately twist your hips. That's the common factor.

Example: A pdx whirl set from left clipper goes clip set, twist hips about 45 degrees inward spinning, and if you set yourself correctly it's as simple as a regular whirl.

-Every paradox move can be set up to finish exactly like a regular move of the same component.

I don't know once i thought of it like that a lot of moves got much easier.

"You're going to suck a long time before you get any good" - Nate Linscott.

It's a pretty generalized version of what you posted, Chris, but that's what has been the driving force for me to keep pursuing freestyle. I'm pretty sure I have better advice floating around my head from other players, but this is the one that stands out most.

Yeh Vasek gave me the same advice on Pdx when i asked him about Pdx Whirls and stuff.

He also said to me about Flurry, making the first dex more 'whirly'. I think this can be more of a stylistic thing once you get good at the move (ie. you can do it without whirling if you like it better), but its good at the start. I found that making the first dex whirly, and shifting my body towards that dex as i completed the second dex, gave me heaps more time for the third dex and catch. It also helped me hit it flipside shortly after :D

Both sides.

edit:
"Don't plant" by Anssi Sundberg when I was playing for the first time with other people. (I used to plant pdx mirage and infinities --> probably the reason why my infinity record was 3 before the trip to Turku! :P )

Mitko from Bulgeria told me stepping is more of a turn than anything. i think someone else told him that, but its so true. and once i learned stepping (shortly after), i got to that point where suddenly all the sets just make sense.

"Lean forward over the bag. It can be tempting to lean backwards, DON'T!!!" -Kenny Shults, Tricks of the Trade

Also the Ancient Greeks had the phrase: "Calepa Ta Kala", which can translate to "That which is worthwhile is difficult to achieve" or "Nothing without hard work". I find that very true for footbag.

"Lower your clipper. Delay it at a lower point." from Jorden.

And the whole, "Try the trick until you hit it...and when you've tried it a million times and still haven't hit it, try again." theme of the 2005 TOFU late night session with Jorden.

Quantum Grifter anyone?

Markus and i had some indian dinner with Reni at this years
Berlin B-day Jam and we talked about how one learns a move
and how one progresses in general .

After ticking all the boxes of "watching vids", "asking others" and
"shredding with advanced/different people " he gave me some
esoteric advice which changed my footbag life forever, and like
all true esoteric insights it was terribly simple :

Think about how you want a move to look, and how it should feel .
Make it as round, smoove and beautiful as you can and keep every
feeling of a good attempt and of all on-days
.

Kinda what Jorrdonne says in his sig but much more charming -
there is nothing more cute than swiss guys trying to moderate their
accent when talking to germans :D

A few years ago one of the Saskatoon guys (sorry, forgot his name) gave me TONS of great advice. He taught me how important warming up and stretching really is. He also taught me how to do this.

And everyone at the jam that weekend gave me the best advice whenever I missed a toe stall: BUY LAVERS!!!

I'm not sure if this is considered advise but I always remember it when I get frustrated with myself- "It's not how many times you drop the bag, it's how many times you pick it up", I think that was on freestyle reality.
