hacky sack, hacky sacking, etc.

Post by brycimus »

i can't stand those terms anymore.  ever since i discovered freestyle and just true footbag for that matter, i hate those words now. i correct some people, but not all. i also show some of my friends vids of people like vasek, and they're blown away. others see it and say "whoa is that hacky sacking?". i'm not the only one who hates this phrase am i? (i doubt it). what do you guys do, do you correct everyone who uses that term (if it annoys you), do you correct people now and then or do you just let it slide by and burn on the inside.

thanks

I was giving a presentation on ethical business and used an example of how unethical Bloughci is and how you need a real 32 panel to truly freestyle.

Show clip of boughci master-disapointed looks on faces

Show clip of Vasek-OOO DAAAAMN

Everyone: Was that hacky sacking?>rpt>rpt>rpt

Me: Freestyle Footbag actually!

Kid in back: No it's not-it's hacky sack!

Me: Go die [INH]

Class: Laughing

Freestyle Footbag wins again!

I'm over the whole thing, to be honest.
If people want to call it hacky sack, they can. Anyone who plays footbag knows the truth, so let them remain ignorant.

However, I do still get people ask what I'm playing, at which I call it footbag.

But I just don't worry any more. "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet". Hacky Sack, Kicky Bag, whatever. It's all the same.

I was kinda leaning toward hating it at one point, but I guess I only wanted to hate it and truely didn't hate it.

I'm pretty tolerent when people say hacky sack actualy and don't mind it too much. If someone ask me if I want to play hacky sack with them, I won't correct them (plus I don't have to be bothered explaining what footbag actualy is). I try to keep things fun and simple.

Yeah, I guess that's the thing. I'm sick of explaining the difference between Hacky Sack and Footbag when, essentially, there is no difference.

I think a lot of us start out feeling we need to "justify" the game/sport we play so we're really defensive about calling it footbag instead of a silly name like hacky sack. But then, after awhile, most players realize that the name doesn't matter >> people that want to make fun of the sport will make fun no matter what it's called, and people that appreciate it will appreciate it no matter what it's called too. Either way, it's the same amount of fun for the player in a tiny freestyle community.

I personally call it hacky sack because 10+ years of using the proper term has ended up in many "You see, it's footbag blah blah blah" types of conversations with people that really don't care. It's just easier to say "yeah, I hacky sack" and then keep on hacking.

I like calling it a billion different things, footbag, hacky sack, sacky sack, hacky hack, sacky bag, baggy sack, hacky sacky baggy sacky hack, leggy ball, hacky ball, footy sack etc.

I still let people know what the real sport name is when I first introduce them to it, but when Peng and I are just goofing off or chatting either of us will use any one of a billion different names, we know what the other person means.

I've just recently discovered the world of freestyle footbag, but have been circle hacking for about 13 years before that so i still and always will refer to it as "hack" and "hacking"

i kind of think its a little annoying when you tell people its called freestyle footbag and then the say "its hacky sack" then im like "ok if your so awesome and all knowing then you have a right to call it that" as long as you land a SS butterfly>whirl then there like whats that? then im like
exactly! your not as smart as you though 0.0 its FOOTBAG!

i just like to stay away from hacky sack, because i think thats what hippies did in the 70's and 80's ;)

I usually try to correct everyone when they call it hackysack, but as of lately i realize theres no point in trying.

I had an entire conversation today on the bus trying to explain what the difference between freestyle footbag and hackysack is, and it got absolutely nowhere. I felt like i was talking to a bunch of retarted people. So now im juss gonna let people call it what they want, and if someone asks me, i will call it footbag. Im too tired of trying to explain it to everyone.

i showed one of my friends some of the bags i made today, and i was like "wanna see the footbags i made" and i showed him, then another friend came over and asked what they were i said "footbags.........A.K.A. hacky sack" i just felt that they might not really know exactly what i was talking about if i didn't say that

I'm glad to see people not hating too much on the 'hackey sack' nomenclature. I played hackey sack long before I played footbag, and as such it has a special place in my heart.
I still ask people if they 'wanna hack', even people who know better, probably because it's shorter and easier than 'would you like to accompany me for some footbag?', as long as we're being proper.
As long as you're understood and not being a prick about it, what the hell, call it what you will, and play it how you will. Have Fun!

This is a little off-topic, but I can't write the word 'football' anymore. It always comes out "footbag" :D
