Hey modified. So how about it: any of you ever done any lockpicking and what are you impressions?
As some of you may know, I have been sick with mono and haven't been able to play footbag for about a month. That given, I've also taken up a hobby that would benefit from being able to pick locks. Since I have always wanted to give learning it a try, I ordered a set off the internet yesterday, and am looking forward to practicing over Spring Break.
I feel like this post should end with a question, but it was at the start of the post, so I'll end it with a question mark and call that good?
im enrolling in a locksmithing training course in september...cant wait. they teach you everything, from the basic lock-tumbler-installation-etc to opening safes just using your senses, break into cars...its gonna be awesome. pays good money too, i hear.
I got into lock picking when I first started exploring (I am assuming your new hobby is Urban Exploration, yes?) but I soon found out that picks are very frowned upon by the UE community, find a more creative way in!!
Also, you will get in ALOT of trouble if ever caught with picks.
It makes the severity of the crime WAY higher!!
That being said, it is kinda cool and empowering knowing how to pick locks, look up the MIT lockpicking guide, it walks you through it.
Yeah, good guess. It is, more or less, urban exploration. The group I've been doing it with has been using more creative techniques-- climbing the outer structure or hiding inside to get locked into the building; getting access through a related, open building. However, some of the places we want to go are locked. We don't plan to do anything malicious-- just look around. I already read most of the MIT guide, though I don't want to read past the initial exercises till I get a chance to practice them on a practice lock.
Yeah, it does seem like the penalty for possession of picks is pretty extreme, so I guess I'd have to be very careful. I'm hoping it won't be a problem, as there's enough of us we can cover ourselves pretty well (I think). What was your experience with it, Tom? Did you find it hard to learn? How proficient did you get? Was it fun to practice?
My picks were shipped today, but probably won't be here for like a week, so I don't have much with which to entertain myself. :/
Internet poker would be a good hobby for someone with mono. You can just learn the game with play money, in fact some people only play play money. The game really has infinite depth and requires a lot of different attributes. The site I play is Ultimatebet.com, that place is the most fun IMO. You can play a 100-man play money tournament, which usually takes about 2+ hours if you make it to the final table.
this is so wierd, because just the other day i did some research and wanted to learn to pick locks, but without a set, you know like everyday tools - i didn't find anything though - it's just ironic that this thread is up and i was looking into it just yesterday
Nice topic Zach. I've been intersted in lock picking and such for a while, but never got too heavily into it. I like combination locks more though. I know a few combination lock tricks... been able to crack some in literally a matter of seconds (only particular brands).
That is odd so many people have that interest...cause a couple years back I nearly ordered a set and book to learn , but backed out. I used to have a really nice forum bookmarked, but that was ages ago. It pretty much had all the information you'd ever want...kinda like footbag and modified. So yeah, that'll keep ya busy, what I did when I had my knee / hip surgery was previously bought 2 32 panel bags and broke them in by hand while I recovered. It's a good way to keep some sort of footbag motivation in mind while keeping your hands busy.
Of course if you've got a comp for gaming and such, grab some Half-Life 2 . Play some Counter-Strike : Source or Day of Defeat : Source. Hell, download the trial edition of Ragnarokonline, I play that all the time. Games aren't the most productive thing in the world, but when you're sick or debilitated, they're the most fun thing in the world
ive got a lock smith friend who loaned me a beginner pick pack... diamond head pick, s pick... and a tension rod... just a grinded allen key...
its come in handy a few times, much safer than leaving keys outside, like under the mat. just put some picks somewhere.... i live in dorms, and someone locks themselves out once a week... at least...
man, its such a fun hobby... i cant help it.... but i dont use them for bad situations, like stealing or whatever, just to help ina pinch... or get payback on someone ....once again... i live in dorms...
Well I guess I have to start posting somewhere. Thankfully this is a subject I learned at school. Hooray for a great education. Anyways Lockpicking is a fun thing to do when there is nothing better to do. As far as the urban exploration goes I would sa ylockpicking is out of that. I managed to get into every room on the Missou campus without any lockpicks. That was a great exploration. I found out though that a good way to start and get the basics down is to practice on a gym lock or something similar to that. Locks on drawers in any kind of Lab works as well. They are usually low skill locks that can be done with just about anything. Get paper clips and practice in the mean time. I have read a few guides on odd lockpick sets like making them out of bananas or making auto-lockpicks out of a 5 dollar tooth flosser at walmart. Just try googleing lockpicks and see what you come up with.
