Wouldn't this be a cool event? I don't have all the ideas worked out, it's just a concept.. feel free to expand/change it
- 4 players are grouped in a circle
- The circle shred progresses just like normal.. no self serves though
- after 3 times around the circle, by crowd response, you knock out one competitor
- keep going until you have a winner
Imagine seeing (for example) Vasek, Bevier, Jorden, and Lon competing shred style.. I mean, crowd response can't be wrong can it? This is a pure show off circle!!!

Re: new event
when I first read "you knock out one of the other competitors" I thought you meant that you physically punch them in the face really hard. I thought to myself "ARE YOU SERIOUS?" and then read on realizing what you meant

Yo Caleb, I forgot that name... Good memory. That was something Brad (Splint) and I were trying to figure out but it got too complicated. I forget, did we try to run it? I think we did at the Chilly Philly that one time. This system would be so much easier >> applause meter style..
"Everyone, let's hear it for Flash" <<applause>>>
"How about Lon" <<applause>>
etc. etc.
It should be obvious which guy impressed and which did not. Whoever didn't sits. Or we could knock them out. ha ha

The Quickening was a sweet idea that Bob put into effect at the last Chilly Philly. It was another version of the competition he mentioned above.
A group of about 10 freestylers stood in a half arch kind of, and some good tunes played to set the vibe. Then, just randomly one player at a time would walk to the center of the arch and bust 1-5 tricks. The compeitors would go for dificulty as well as visually stunning creativity and they would play to the crowd. I remember it was hilarious when Sebastien Duchesne was about to walk to the center, paused for a minute to be courteous to anyone who may have walked out before him, then Jon Scheider totally cut him off to be funny about it. Haha. Anyway, the crowd loved it and it was fun to be in. At the end, the players themselves conferanced and decided the winner.
Maybe we'll have the Quickening at the Steel City Shred Off!!
But I don't think you're supposed to know about that yet.

That's right.. I'm remembering now.
What made that event fail IMO was that it was too many people and it was a difficult mindset for the players. What I'm proposing here is just like a shred circle so the players will be set up to be successful right from the start.
Picture this.. there's enough players to have 3 separate 4-man groups. Each of those groups is whittled down to 1 competitor based on audience applause. Then, one "finals" circle immediately goes off and is run the same way. In the end from 12 players, you're down to the best circle shredder as voted by the audience.
Caleb >> please try this out.. It would only take 15 minutes to run the entire event and I think it would be more true to how we all play in reality.
What do you think?
edit: A good MC is critical to this event being fun. You need to be up there oohing and ahhhing to get the crowd involved.. and then when it comes to voting time, you have to get the crowd to be active again.

I don't know. I don't see what's so difficult about the Quickening. It's the same thing just everyone at once. I thought The Quickening went great! Circles aren't quite as crowd oriented as a big arch of people faced to the crowd. Circles literally are closed off from the crowd.
The thing I liked better about the Quickening was that it wasn't just like a shred circle. You don't take turns, you just get a feeling and go. That aspect of it alone made for some good crowd vibe. I mean sure it has a little bit of a disorganized edge to it. But neither idea is quite as perfectly formed as like crunching numbers for shred30. (Which you hate anyway Bobby.

I think your idea makes alot of sense. It is very natural to just shred in a circle with others, and if the person b4 you does good it could build a vibe and then you can do good too.
It is good for promoting to the public too because if the public sees a shred circle they are probably subconsiously deciding who is best of the circle the same as the judges will do in this type of event. No spectators want to hang around to see some numbers based results they really dont understand anyways.

Re: new event
this is almost how the first ever hackrifice tournament was done. it was done by judges though, who just watched the circle and chose their winners based on who went biggest, hardest and longest. who threw it down best was the winner.Rieferman wrote:Wouldn't this be a cool event? Heh, odd timing for this topic. Ianek and I have been working on a new competition format for the past year, and were just about to release it to the public. The new competition is simply called "Circle contest", and it vies to completely transform the way we footbaggers compete and organize events. We really wanted to take our time in order to work out every angle and possibility, and now... it's finally done!
Stay tuned for the official announcement and accompanying guidebook.
EDIT: but ours isn't a popularity contest, it's a real event with judges and officiation.

I don't think audience response is a popularity contest - I agree it might not be appropriate for Worlds, but that's not what we're talking about anyways.. We're talking about a "true to freestyle" event that's fast/easy/no overhead/no frills to run and fun to watch. Something that would be suitable for most events but maybe not the biggest ones where people really care about winning as much/more than bragging rights.EDIT: but ours isn't a popularity contest, it's a real event with judges and officiation.

I wasn't trying to make a jab at your suggestion, Bob. I know crowd response will make it more fun and casual, and can even be an effective way to pick a winner, but I also know that we *all* have favourites and if a player has a cheering section (like in tennis for example), then might does not make right.
Anyway, the easy way out is to let the crowd decide, and that's always an option in the Circle contest.
Ok, no more talk until the announcement.
