I think I'm going to check this out, despite the fact that I still haven't beat Morrowind yet  (though with my new character I'm really really far into the game).

Alright. I got it and bought approx. 750 more megs of ram to run it. Now when I open it, it crashes immediately :(.

Looking around for some help. Any tib bits you guys have would also be really appreciated :).

EDIT - Like, I can open it up and get the menu (Play, Data Files, Technical Support, yadda yadda). I choose 'Play', and the screen dissappears and another comes up. Right afterwards, I get the pop-up saying that it encountered a problem and needs to shut down.

Sounds sort of like a video card error or something?

That sucks Byrin. I hope your computer is good enough to run it!
I get weird things, but it runs fine otherwise for me. Sometimes it just randomly closes (I'm save-obsessive, so it never really does much...).

!! What?? Was that second screenshot actually from the game?? That's so weird. I encountered one strange character so far, but it wasn't that silly. It was some guy in Anvil who was very much like the guy in Morrowind (outside of Gnisis) who thinks he's a slaughterfish... Oh, speaking of which, I heard some people talking in one of the Anvil inns (the one on the docks) about how the god Vivec, in the city of Vivec in Vvardenfall was attacked by Daedra from a gate!! That was neat.

I'm trying so hard to find the theives guild. Rah! I got so many hints in Anvil, about that one guy who everyone laughs at, but his house is locked, and I couldn't find him after looking so long!

Good luck getting the game to work Byrin, like Iain said, with some specs we might be able to help.

I'm trying to find the thieves' guild too, but it's like they're hiding for some reason or something.. I like the through the nose shot, I took some more screenshots too.

Right through the nose (from the back!)
Stumbled upon a zombie taking a nap
What a tease, I picked this 'hard' lock at security skill 17 to get this awesome looking dagger.

edit: Did anyone else notice the quickload key is also Fraps' default video capture key? I took some massive 3+ gig 5 minute videos without even realizing it.

Oh, are you serious?
I never noticed, and I purposely was trying to record videos (I recorded lots of Sean Bean!, riding horses, and walking in forests/watchign grass move in the wind...) -- I changed my Fraps' video record to F12, though, without knowing it...just 'cause it's closer to print screen on this keyboard.

Anyway...back to the game.
SEMI-SPOILER BELOW (not really, if you're playing the game).........

How many gates has everyone closed? I've only actually seen three, but skipped one, because there were lots of scamps and daedra on our side. I'm working on my second right now -- it's kind of boring, and scary though.

I was talking to my brother who is playing with his two friends at his place right now (for the first time), and realized that I've never even been to the imperial city!! I'm going back there, because I peaked at some hints on how to get into the thieves very briefly, and saw that it has something to do with someone in the imperial city... (sorry if that is too much information...) so I'm going to check that out. To Oblivion!

i know how to get into the theives guild but haven't done so yet. In my search for recommendations to the arcane university, i met someone who told me how to get in or at least how to get in contact with the leader.

I've only closed one gate because i've placed other things higher on my list. I've found like 6 on the yellow road to leyowiin.

SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN"T PLAYED THE GAME
...But not really if you have...

I still have no idea how to join the thieves, but I'm working on my recommendations now, too, so I guess I will get there eventually. I'm still not sure how to get fighters guild quests, but I'm sure I will figure it out. I'm on my way to the imperial city for the first time and stopped in Skingrad -- it's so big!

I closed 3 gates, and it's pretty fun, but I'm going to wait until the next part of the main quest to see if I even should be closing them. I dunno.

You see a lot of funny things :? Those argonians are straaange.

I really like how natural a lot of things seem...like the way the mages guild works with the recommendations to study at the university. And how it's so bloody hard to find the thieves...

I just got to level 8, and recently levelled up some skills, like sneak, marksman, etc... I can't wait to get the zoom-in for marksman!!

Oh -- and the tips are so great!! Like the one about how acrobats can jump off of water!!! And how you run faster with your weapon sheathed! And how you gain skill in alchemy by eating raw ingredients!

I don't have any good screenshots to show... I'll try to take some good ones..

The funniest person I've encountered :(

(Oh -- this guy started a fist-fight with someone else on the docks, though, and I thought that was neat...)

Specs:

Acer Aspire AS20
Celeron CPU 2.93 GHZ
0.99 GB Ram
Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics controller

That's basically what I could gather. I know my way around a computer, but when it comes to *knowing* it, I'm lost.

I guess I'll go read the manual now  .

EDIT: go to the bottem and read the edit first

this problem is most likely due to lack of latest drivers for you graphics or sound or having an incapable graphics or sound card. To play oblivion, you need to have directx9.0c (included on the cd), a 128 MB direct3D compatible graphics card, and a directx8.1 compatible sound card.

These are the supported video chip sets:

ATI X1900 series
ATI X1800 series
ATI X1600 series
ATI X1300 series
ATI X850 series
ATI x800 series
ATI x700 series
ATI x600 series
ATI Radeon 9800 series
ATI Radeon 9700 series
ATI Radeon 9600 series
ATI Radeon 9500 series
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 series
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 series
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 series
NVIDIA GeForce FX series

This doesn't mean you can't play without these chips, they're just chips the company guarantees can play the game.

I couldn't find out if your graphics card can do 128 MB direct3d. Here's a link to the latest drivers for it: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files ... 22189.html
Fixes an issue associated with system crash analysis pointing to the Intel graphics driver at ''0x8E_ialmdnt5!DrvGradientFill+923.''
That could be (and hopefully is) the problem you're experiencing.

Also, to give us more info, try to play the game again and make note of the time when the game closes. Then click start > run. Type in eventvwr.msc and click on system in the left nav bar and look under type for an error at the time that your game closed. Post that up and we might be able to help you further.

EDIT: ok, i searched some other forums and found that an onboard graphics card can't run this game. You will have to purchase a seperate card to play.

I ran it through the site that Sam gave (thanks dude!!) and basically it's my video card. Everything else is fine.

I guess tomorrow I will pick up a new one. I'm thinking... Radeon 9800 Pro?

EDIT - Kinda funny. I was playing around with that site and tried out C & C Generals. It said I could not run it due to my video card, but just last night I was playing it out of boredom.

EDIT 2 - Just wanted to extend my thanks to everyone for the help!!

I've still only closed the one gate.. I've seen three others, but have been doing sidequests (fighter's guild mainly, and whatever others I can find) when I passed them and didn't bother. I'm level 12 at the moment, I have the zoom in marksman, it's so fun, and you can still strafe while zoomed in, so that helps with the millions and millions of flame atronarchs you have to fight :?

This may or may not be appropriate, but.. I took a screenshot of me making proper use of my 'calming touch' spell.

That's flippin awesome. 7 weeks from now, when I am done with the semester and can start playing (:(), I'm gonna do the assassin route as well. I had decided faaaaaaar in advance: with all the amazing innovations in stealth, marksmanship, and physics, how could anyone pass up stealth?

Keep posting screenshots guys! :D

I would make sure the card you buy is compatible with your system. Do some research so you don't end up buying a card that won't work with what you got.

I was just doing that, and I've come to the conclusion that I will just take my CPU back to the place where I got my ram and have them give me the best card they got.

Just went through 7 or 8 fights in the arena, pretty fun way to get some extra money :) (well, not really, I think I lost money since I used so many dwarven arrows)

What's everyone's favorite town so far? I like Anvil, I bought a house there :D http://server2.uploadit.org/files/Slippur-MyHouse.jpg

i haven't been in all the cities yet, and to be honest, the count in each one of them are idiots. The best one i've been in is bruma. I think after i finish my tour of the cities, i'll buy my house there. My tour started in the imperial city to bruma to cheydinhol to leyawiin to bravil. I'll be heading to skingrad next. I have a feeling i'll like it alot from what i've heard from the people in the towns i've been to. Also they have the best alchemist whom i have quite a few questions for.
