Anyone remember how we ran the "fast shred 30" a few years ago? Instead of lengthy pauses in between competitors, there was a 10 second countdown to allow the first player to get out of the way and the next player to get into position. Like this
player 1 shreds for 30 second
countdown 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 GOOOOOO
player 2 shreds for 30 seconds
etc.
So, if it takes 40 seconds per player, and you have (say) 15 players, the entire event runs start to finish without downtime (i.e. "lose the audience attention" time) in 10 minutes.
I remember a couple competitors whining (get over it!!!) but the spectators LOVED it.

yeah I remember doing this once at a comp in France too. Except it wasn't really planned; the first guy came up, did his 30s shred, then immediately the second shredder rushed up on stage and just started shredding... then the other 12 players followed suit. I honestly thought it was great!

If it's the way to go, what might we do to try to get event organizers to go this route? Too often there's this huge wait in between events. Though my wife supports my playing, she's a pretty typical spectator for the most part. As soon as the first break hits, she's bored and thinks the whole thing is pretty lame. My parents, my sister, my neigbor.. everyone I can think of feels the same way. Why don't we change? Let's make it fun to watch! How do we get people on board?
edit: I'm selling this as a "it will help us present the sport better" concept, but my motivations are really more of a "I think it's boring to wait through a half hour to 45 minutes of shred 30 when we have a better way to go that will allow me to get back to fun shred circles" type of thing. If you ran intermediate into open in this fashion it would be crazy to see the skill steadily step up as each 30 seconds pass.. and it would get us back out there shredding sooner too.
