Seal hunting, what's the big deal?
So the seal hunt started again and I'm left confused over the major global outcry for its immediate end.
I definitely think this is a case of emotional attachment to cute white furred black eyed cutsey fluff and the visual intensity of red blood on white snow.
Why don't these activists feel the same about the huge amount of baby cows slaughtered daily All around the world? or all the lamb that makes its way to our grocery stores? Is it because they live their lives in small white plastic pens and are slaughtered in factories? hanging an animal to drain the blood from an open wound in the neck imo is much more violent a death than a club or a bullet.
Unfortunately I don't understand the complex ecosystem up north, but shouldn't people be concerned about the endangered levels of polar bears and killer whales rather than the seals which are a common food for many other animals?
And whats with the boycotting of all things seafood from Canada? That's not fair. Why should a fisher from the pacific be affected by seal hunters in the north? That aint right
Is the huge outcry fueled by emotional impact or true rational information? Does this seal hunt pose that much of a problem to the environment?

Maybe they do. I do my best to avoid all animal products.Seath wrote:Why don't these activists feel the same about the huge amount of baby cows slaughtered daily All around the world? or all the lamb that makes its way to our grocery stores? I think sport hunting in general is dumb and don't really understand the pleasure people take in it.

Hunting is in our roots. Humans may not be around today if they did not kill other animals. I find a lot of pleasure in hunting down animals and killing them. It's what our anscestors did and what every carnivore does. I don't mean to come off as barbaric, but I do like to do it. I am against killing an animal if you're not going to eat it though. I love animals and would not kill them just to kill them.

the thing is, humans in general are selfish beings. We do not care about killing cows and chicken and other various animals because we eat them on a daily basis. However, those animals that we do not eat we pretend that we care about so that we seem like good people. Its pretty fucked up but the thing is, if we need it we dont care about the negative effects, and if we dont need it than we pretend to care about what we are doing.
IMO if one animal is able to be hunted, then they all should be able to be hunted. We dont want to have discrimination in the animal kingdom

You sir are obviously not informed on how animals are slaughterd. At my school we have a Meat Lab ((Slaughter House)) We slaughter tuesdays and thursdays we dont just slit tehre throat while there alive and hang em upside down. You take a bolt gun which renders them insecable ((Uncosuious but there heart is still pumping)) THen you slit there throat when they cant feel anything. Sometimes when you hunt it takes 3-4 bullets to kill a animal depending on where you shoot it/whith what gun.

true but dont forget kosher and halal slaughter, those two religions forbid the deadbolt or stunning technique, the animal has its throat slit and drained of blood, and even when the deadbolt or stunning is used they are still alive and experience their blood being drained from them as they are hung upside down, they just dont feel it cuz their brain has been tampered with.

What's the big deal? The big deal is that baby animals shouldn't be being brutally killed for profit. Whether or not other animals are being slaughtered for other reasons in other parts of the world, brutally killing baby seals shouldn't be allowed.
Trying to shrug off the cruelty of seal hunting by showing other incidences of animal cruelty doesn't cut it for me, and trying to undermine anti-seal hunting activists because they don't protest other acts of violence against animals is kind of pathetic. Sure what occurs in slaughter houses is just as terrible (If not worse) as what goes on up in Canada, but you shouldn't have to be asking about what big deal is about animal cruelty.

I'd hope that they would feel the same about it, but why all the emphasis on the seals?wolfpac444 wrote:Maybe they do. sealing isnt really sport hunting though, they are hunted for their pelts and seal oil which is very high in omega 3 fatty acids.
I have my concerns about the seal hunt too but it seems like its just another topic that people can rally behind when there are so many more environmental issues that need addressing before the seal hunt gets disected.

Probably, but I'm still not going to undermine someone sticking up for animals that are being beaten to death for cash.I have my concerns about the seal hunt too but it seems like its just another topic that people can rally behind when there are so many more environmental issues that need addressing before the seal hunt gets disected.

my point was that the brutal killing of baby cows and sheep for profit is the same cruelty, what is it about the seals that raise so much drama every year? It's illegal to kill a seal that is considered a baby, yea the animal is still like 1 month old, but at one month it is independant of its mother. We associate baby seals with how old they are but not in relation to their lifespan. I guess the point im trying to make is the cuteness is a factor in everyones pity for the seals. If they were scaled and green and hissed and spit acid then im sure seal killings would very rarely raise an eyebrow.

I read a story a couple months ago about one or two seals that were "saved" from something out East someplace. The only part of the article I remember, was the part where they said the seal ate like 20 or 30 pounds of fish a day.
I thought ,my God, that appetite is unsustainable.
Somebody please club that seal ,as soon as possible.
Whack!!!

Yeah what is it with wanting to seal everything?? I mean if you hit a clean trick and it comes up nicely and you just handcatch it, I'd condsider that hit. I don't see why adding a butterfly or an osis to it would change that. There really is NO need to go hunting down seals in my opinion. And on that matter I'd also like to.. oh wait.

lol.
In all seriousness I've never been big on animal rights. At the moment duck hunting season has just started and there is the predictable outcry and protest by people with horrible priorities in my opinion. The fact is with ducks that their population is sustainable despite the hunting. If the hunting stopped we would definitely see an increase in their population - which would mean more animals competing for the same food and cause reductions in the numbers of other animals - most likely endangered wetland birds that compete with the ducks for food and habitat. So continueing hunting (so long as it is regulated) is actually a good thing for the environment. The way I see it the duck numbers need to be kept under control and there are people who enjoy doing it - and even pay to do what is in reality a service to the environment (and therefor to society). It's a win win situation in my opinion.
I think most other hunting follows a similar arguement. Hunting should definitely be regulated so that it can be kept sustainable but if it is sustainable than it's fine - in fact if it is sustainable it should continue because stopping it will create greater problems to what isn't really a problem.
The bleeding heart reactionary animal rights activists need to understand that death is a very important part of the ecosystem and without enough death it can lead to enourmas environmental problems.
That said, I agree that people who enjoy killing baby seals probably are a little sick but if they're essentially doing good things for the environment and society I don't think it's a big deal.
