Yep, you've peaked. Give up now and let me surpass you. You have no desire to be as good as Jorden is in his latest video. You'll never hit a new beast again. BAP? Meh . . . who needs em when you can be BAD (Big ass dropper)?

Don't make footbag the center of your life, though I don't think you have.
Decide how much importance you give it, and leave it at that.

I wrote a 20 paragraph introspective about what footbag means to me. But then I deleted it. It was too personal to be online anyway.

I went to New Jersey today to play with the people who basically instilled in my the drive for footbag I have today. The hour drive home really got me thinking.

I think sometimes I get too serious about footbag. And I pressure others to view it in the light I do. But at the end of the day, to some it is just a game. To me getting better is the goal, thats my focus. My drive consumes me. Maybe too much.

I say footbag is about fun, but I really don't mean that. I wonder sometimes about the "right" reasons to play. Perhaps they are different for everyone.

I'm so about like, getting good and stuff. But even when I hit new areas in my game, I dont get any huge rush from it. I just wish I could get back the feeling of breaking 8 kicks with 9, or hitting my first mirage.

Sometimes I feel like I play footbag because I'm good. And I feel like if I stopped my life wouldn't have much value at all.

Perhaps this did get a little too personal. Screw it, I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Yo Dave. You and I have always been in the same boat as far as why we play. We want to be good at footbag. Dare I say, we have wanted to be the best since we first started getting into the sport. This attitude is without a doubt the minority, almost looked down upon. But a competitive drive is what we have and it's what carries you and I threw footbag, school, and just about anything we care about doing.

It's not about getting good, and it's not about progressing fast, it's about perfection. There's a reason we have challenged eachother to learn just about every set there is in the game. There's a reason when we kick together one of us will bust something HUGE and immediately say to the other "Was that clean?" We hold ourselves to a higher standard that just hitting tricks. It has to be clean, it has technical tricks with creative links, it HAS to be a challenge.

And that huge rush may not come from when you hit a new trick anymore. But it's not gone. Hitting new tricks isn't quite the priority anymore. I'd be much happier hitting Fog>Triple ATW today than if I hit my first Nemesis. That huge rush came from being the last two kicking in the hotel lobby shred at Funtastik....kicking on stage at Montreal when everyone else tired out late at night. It's that vibe you get when you're pushing yourself with everything you've got, and the kid next to you is still shouting out bigger combos for you to hit midstring. Maybe it doesn't HAVE to be footbag to give you that rush. The reason you get that rush from footbag may only be because you're good at it, then you're stuck with being serious about playing kicky sack instead of something "normal" like basketball or football. But the rush isn't gone and it won't be until you stop pushing the limits of what you can do.

Nuff said.....probably too personal again.

Dave, and Caleb, I think having passion to be the best and to be competitive is great. I've never had a strong drive like that, but when I play with someone who is competitive and striving to hit awesome stuff, I step it up, too. It energizes me.

anyone who looks down upon competitive players needs to stop whining and try harder ;)

I realized today that 80% of my high school career has had footbag in it. Sometimes I don't really realize how long I've been playing this game. It is quite a rush when you go back and think about all the things that have happened in your life.

I watched all the old hackrifice videos the other day. I think I just sat there for an hour basking in the past, and remembering being in awe at something like scorpian's tail. I really miss the past. I miss playing with Ashley and waiting for bags in the mail. I miss watching Just Shred 2 everyday after school. I think most of all I miss the craving to hit that new trick or combo.

It's an awkward feeling when the thing you wanted to be you become. I feel like I'm finally "one of the boys". I'm not the best by a longshot, but I know where I stand in freestyle. The place I am now was a goal of mine sinec the start. But for some reason it doesn't quite feel as rewarding as it should.

I heard people always want what they can't have. I guess that's really true. I never thought I could hit things like I hit, so my desire to was just increased. I think when you reach whatever level your stiving for you end up finding more wrong with the reached level then what's right. I get mad at myself for dropping 5's. 2003 David would have wet himself at just the thought of hitting one.

It feels like footbag has changed a lot. I feel like all the people I looked up to here in North America just kind of threw in the towel. All the people on where the ripwalk ends were it man. Ahren, Chad, Ellis, they were all the shit. They were my idols. And now it feels like they just get served by kids in Europe.

It feels like the scene is really disconnected. And I feel like what's really important isn't important at all to most people. The footbag scene is so caught up on big tricks and combos. Everyone's all about new equiptment and bags and stuff. Everyone talks about the sport being big, but no one really does anything. I know I dont.

I miss the friendships I had with the people I started with. I miss chilling in Jack's store playing video games talking about the summer tournaments we would all go to. I miss driving back from New Jersey with my dad with a list of all the things I should work on until I would shred with the crew again in a month.

It feels silly that I've devoted so much of my life to this game. Countless hours. A lot of the time, it is all worth it. But sometimes it's not. I wonder a lot about who I would be if I never found footbag. I wonder if I'd have better friendships here. If I'd feel more normal.

I kind of wish I had struck a better balance between footbag and real life. I think then I would be a more happier individual. But I'm not sure if I could stand going to tournaments and feeling like I could be 10x better. It always bums me out when I don't meet the potential I know I have.

To most it probably seems my view of footbag is quite negative. It's really not though. I do love it. I do want to keep playing. I just get burnt out and stuff and when I'm too introspective I find the bad in footbag. But for every bad, there is a good.

I guess this whole thing didn't have much of a point. I just like to document how I feel. Footbag is at least half mental after all. I think it's good to talk about stuff. To analyze what you spend your existence doing. And perhaps it will make me a more rounded individual when I go back and read this in a few months.

I hope one day footbag is a bigger sport. I hope I can travel and meet all the people I like. There are so many people I haven't met or met only once. I feel like I'm really missing out. I think if footbag had more money in it I could see people more. I wouldn't have to save money to go places. I'm not sure if it's worth the tradeoff though.

I think I'm going to lay off modified for a while. It doesn't quite represent what footbag is to me. Which is odd, becuase I don't really know what footbag represents to me anyway. But I don't think it's this.

Peace,

David Clavens

The older BAP players have not "thrown in the towel," they simply dont have the mindset or the drive to push themselves to be the best anymore. You are forgetting that those players had already been the "best" for 5-10 years-thats a long time to be the best. i think most of them are comfortable about where they are at and are simply interested in maintaining what they've got and having fun. The newer-skool shredders (you and jorden for example) have only been "the best" for about a year or two. You still have a few years to bask in your "bestness" and continue to improve and diversify your games. After 5 more years of playing, will you strive to keep up with the younger generation who are learning things we didnt think were hittable? Maybe, but maybe not.
