Anyone ever use them? It's what I learned with because being made out of canvas, they're light and have a good feel to them. I'm going to experiment with modding them, see if they can hold me over until I get my lavers.

Not to be a dick, but...

Don't bother. The things have almost no toe box. A jillion people have already tried. Don't waste your time. Get one of the recommended shoes, Lavers, Climacool's or G-units and do the recommended mods. Once you use those for a while you'll understand why chux aren't worth the effort.

Cory, chucks are a classic hacky sack shoe, I used to wear them myself for all the same reasons you did. When I decided that I wanted to learn some advanced freestyle, I switched to some shoes which built a little better for delaying, the Rod Lavers. That's what most people use, and that's what most people on this forum will recommend. There are many threads in this same sub-forum regarding what kind of lavers you should get and how to modify them.

welcome to the boards. you should not wait to get lavers. that is, if you want to start freestyling.

you should do so soon.

im sure whatever you have is a descent start. but better equipment means quicker progression.

The only things preventing me from getting lavers right now are the money, i'm an unemployed high school student and the wait time after ordering them. I'm hoping by the end of the month I'll have solved both those problems. I don't actually see it as that big a deal, because of my history as a circle kicker, I'm going to be working strongly on my left leg, so once my equipment does arrive I'll be able to start right into freestyling.

Sounds good dude! Definitely work on hitting 50-100 consecutives where all surfaces are used at least a few times before you really start on freestyle. The inside surface of the chucks are not bad, so if you want to work on inside delays, it won't be too frustrating until you can get your lavers.

My current personal records are 157 with all surfaces on the right foot, and 62 without putting my leg down (mostly inside hits, some outside)

the 62 without putting your leg down shows good balance, that's key in footbag, all you have to do is drill your left side and own the alternating toe stalls and you'll be on your way.... and also get some damn shred shoes haha.

I played in chucks for the first year of freestyle, due to them being the shoes I happened to wear at the time. Actually my avatar is still them, cause I'm too lazy to change it

Personally I think the inside surface is horrible, it slopes right off at the edge there, but to get started they will be fine. Also the sole doesn't provide much protection, but for low level stuff this shouldn't matter at all. Good luck with getting some lavers dude

Haha yours actually look a bit like mine, were they white at one point but have progressed to a sort of dirty brownish grey?

No, mine were dark blue, and faded to a grey! I loved them, I never saw this happen to anyone elses (And EVERYONE around here has chucks... sigh...) so I was really disappointed when they finally died... big tear down one side, sigh. Now I have black ones, but they're nowhere near as cool

Wouldn't shoes with rubber toes like Chucks or all-stars be ideal with some sort of toe mod? Like simply cutting off the top and leaving a big ugly hole, or sewing in some facile or something?

Dude, there's a place to get mesh lavers in downtown Toronto on Queen St. W. called "Da Zone". It's a sneaker shop and the prices aren't absurd for sneakers.

sounds pretty messy buck... and that still leaves the inside surface problem, not to mention weight issues and if you ever want to hit ps whirl without pain

Actually, they're a really heavy shoe. Try holding a Chuck in one hand and nearly any other shoe in the other, and you'll see.

The only benefit I can think of is that the Chuck Taylor has a better heel delay than the Laver, but that's, uh, not going to come in handy very often.
