Atomic Mirage (Atom Smasher)

Atomic Mirage (Atom Smasher)
TOE > OP OUT [DEX] >> OP IN [DEX] > OP TOE [DEL]

I'm mostly focusing on the atomsmasher, but all around, my atomic set needs help. I've hit the move before about 5 times total out of millions of tries. It seems the move's concepts have completely stumped me. So I come here for advice, take a look . . .

Here is a vid of me attempting atomsmasher. This is probably the best attempt I've had in months. Any tips, advice, and/or observations on what I'm doing or could be doing would be apprieciated. Thanks!

looked good to me. I couldn't really tell how close it was to being under you, but that makes it easier for me. Also to get ready for the second dex in that Atom Smasher try concentrating on using the momentum of the one leg going up to help you bring the other down. I'm not sure if that made sence, but its what I think of. Nice set, just need to be able to switch out of it quicker... I think. Hope that helps.

You've got the set (both sides, I hope :) ), you just need to get comfortable with the move. Try some other atomic moves like tap, legbeater, eggplant, and atomic clipper... Just try and get the feel for it. The only thing that I can't tell from the video is -- how far away from you (forward) is the bag going? If it's getting too far away from you, keep the set under you more. Another thought is to maybe conceptualize the set more as the -set- not the dex. Keep yourt hips down and set high and tight. Get your feet back to the ground after the set? I don't know, it looks good, maybe you're just not comfortable with it yet? Something that really helped my atomic is to think of the set as a symposium set. It helps with conceptualization. Just some thoughts.

I have difficulties in setting ( steps and atomics) the bag straight up and not forward.
I second the symposium advice from nagasake.
Nowadays my sets are getting better and better since I pull my toes up.
Always keep very close to the bag is a good advice for making tricks much easier and more economic.

Good luck !

good call on the think symposium at the start. i used to have alot more trouble with atomics and quantum till yves layed it down for me at footjam.

when setting, don't bring your setting foot too high. set quickly and plant it very fast. it's pretty damn hard to twist your hips back and forth when you don't have a foot on the ground to help change the momentum.
jump of your planted leg and into the dex. focus on pointing your knee inwards, not only on bringing it upwards. if you just bring your knees up with out pointing them in you'll have to set diagonally, which will cause trouble later. give your hips a good twist inwards and, if your knees are pointed in you'll have a huge window. twist the hips back, plant the dexing leg, and then continue to bust out what ever trick you wanted to hit.

It was a good set , just have to try and get it to the side of your body that you do the 2nd dex with, i did it the same way you did when i first started but after awhile you'll get the hang of it, i hope that helps.

Any more tips? I'm finally trying to learn this >> never have had luck before. I'll take any/all tips even if you think they've been said a million times before. So far, this is what Brian (who I kick with) says:
- Keep the set straight up and down
- Keep the set close
- Don't dex out and around, drive the knee straight inwards and up/down in a piston motion
- set while you're launching

These have helped, but I'll take more advice or drills if you have them

Hey Bob.
If I remember, the best tip I was ever given about atomic sets was to start out as a symposium atomic set. Keep your setting foot off the ground and hop off of JUST the dexing foot. Once you're up and over the bag you can plant your setting leg again before you complete the move. When my friend told me this I had learned the set in about 30 minutes.

The knee-thrusting is vital too. The faster you can get that leg to the other side of your body the higher your set will be able to go, and the more time you will have to complete a downtime element after.

Be careful though, and stretch your hips -- pushing myself on flip atomic fucked up my hip and I haven't been able to use it for two years now...

Oh...I just read that Sam had already given this tip :/
That and the knee thrusting helped me the most though...

Your setting foot stays in the air way too long. You want to plant that foot quicker, that way you can drive your atomic dexing leg up faster. Point your knee in on the atomic dex.

Tips:
1) try to complete the first dex by moving your leg (dexing) more laterally (toward midline of your body) in order to clear the bag INSTEAD OF lifting your leg high over the bag. The reason is because the longer your 1st dexing leg stays in the air, the longer you have to wait to start your second dex.

2) Atom smasher is really an easy move if the dexes are kept right in front of you and your movements are close to midline. What that means is that your knees should always stay close together. Before you start the move, make sure the knee of the stalling leg is near midline and the knee of the dexing leg is close by. When actually hitting the move, never let your knees come apart. They have to work together in a 'S' motion (feels like paradox?).

With atomic set it is important to keep your knees close together. When you set it helps if your feet are parallel and close together, and remember to set straight.

The way I finally got atomsmashers consistant was to visualize my atomic dexing leg tapping the ground in the following position: knee bent in, in front of setting leg such that you can actually see the foot of your setting leg through the crook of your knee. If this doesn't make sense, then I can post pictures later. After that it's just a mirage.

um, yeah . read this thread and check out the link - the best atomic tips
that i read so far :

http://list.footbag.org/majordomo/lette ... ite.com%3E

from your video, its kinda hard to tell if you are ready for atomics yet .
try to set straight and start the dex much earlier, so that you have both
legs back on the ground, when the bag is peaking .
do it to handcatch first and try to analyze/feel your motions with every
attempt - learn from your own body !

read the advice from Yacine - he da man !!!

good luck, you can do it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's no good... have you recovered?

So what are some good stretches for the atomic movement?

Put your setting foot down quicker and try to pull down the dexing leg faster.
I hope it helps
