Freestyle Footbag...What makes it a sport?

My friends think I take "hackeysack" way too seriously. They say it's just a hobby or an activity. But I think it's a sport. What makes it a sport though? My friend says sports are team oriented but wrestling isn't really team oriented, swimming isn't per sai, rock climbing etc..

I think of a sport as an activity that takes physical endurance and something that takes skill. which footbag takes both of those. people who think your taking it to seriously,IMO, are just jealous that they arent able to do what you do.

maybe what you should do is talk to your friends and show them more about the sport like maybe the history of it and the basics. show them tricks that catch the eye, like, pendulum or cross body rakes, anything with ducking, diving.... maybe just maybe theyll turn around.

also goto dictionary.com and print out the definition or "hackeysack" and the definition of footbag and show it to them... that helped me out alittle

you can always throw some other sports in their faces that really don't seem like sports. Bowling being the best example that i can think of.

You can also use the fact that footbag is officially a sport now

I've witnessed many arguments around certain activities and wether or not the group could justify considering that activity a sport. Truth is 'sport' is a word, it has a definition, but some people have their own ideas of what that definition is, and until everyone arguing over a specific activity can come to a unanimous decision on what the ultimate definition of 'sport' is then arguing it is futile.

And footbag is a sport. But by the definition, competitive street sweeping could be considered a sport, a cartwheel race could also be a sport. It's a silly argument.

I would say the majority of people who play freestyle footbag in the whole world and on this forum do so as hobby more than as a sport - but really we're just talking about definitions of words.

Freestyle footbag is obviously as much of a sport as gymastics, diving, ariel skiing etc. - Although most people do not approach it as a serious sport in the way that these are.

Jumping off a board into water and doing a flip is not a sport - meeting up with some friends and doing tricks with a small beanbag is not a sport. At least I define a sport as an organised competition of a physical activity.
