I'm so excited for this! I just started reading the book the other day (I'd been waiting since it came out, but there is no way I could have read it during school with all the readings I had. It's so crazy, because I had just finished studying all of the paintings last year, I studied the architecture (of the exact same buildings, their histories all of the terms and everything) this year, and we studied the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden section in the first year math course that I took this year. It's so crazy -- I know everything in the book already

(Oh, I also referenced some stuff on female fertility goddesses in my essay on Medieval and Byzantine art and architecture and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre!) Oh yeah, and this is kind of neat, I was studying Notre Dame in Medieval history, and the flying buttresses and gargoyles, and learned the origin of the word gargoyle and told my brother just a day before he read it in the novel (I haven't reached that point yet myself). Neat stuff. He says that I've been trained to read this book.

The movie has the craziest actor line-up too!
Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou (Amelie), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Alfred Molina (Dr. Octopus), Jurgen Prochnow (I recognize him, but can't place any movies...), and Paul Bettany (who was the jester in A Knight's Tale)!!!

I'm super excited. So far this is probably my favourite book ever. I'm reading when I could be playing Oblivion!

I'm really excited too. I read the book a couple of months ago, way after the first release, so I'm lucky to not have to wait that long for the movie to come out.

Yeah, I've read this book a while back after a friend suggested it to me! I finally saw the trailer for the movie a couple of weeks ago and I'm so excited to see the movie too!! It's one of my favorite books!

I heard people say that the book reads like an action movie.
I wont read the book, but will probably watch dvd when it comes out.

da vinci code= awesome, Angels and Demons= even better!

I'm wayyyyyy excited for the movie to come out, but the sucky thing is that i'm hard of hearing and so i will understand nothing until the captioned version comes out

The book is amazing!
I would definately read the book before seeing the movie. There is so much valuable information that probably won't appear in the movie adaptation. The book is not only a non-stop exciting action read (New York Times' comment was, "BLOCKBUSTER PERFECTION"), but it feels like a series of greatly informative and interesting essays about a ton of different subjects all presented in story form. The book is PACKED with awesome facts and history! That's one of my favourite things about it. A combination of this book and my medieval history course are really making me consider persuing medieval history in further studies and/or as a career!

If you're even remotely interested in reading in general I would highly recommend this book. I just wish more novels were like it.

Hey Griffin, is Angels and Demon a prequel? I heard that it shares the same protagonist, but is it the same story? I'm totally reading it next!! I'm almost done Da Vinci Code!

EDIT: I noticed that the new paperback cover design is split into proportions that appear to fit the golden section, so I measured and one half does. I guess it's just coicidence, since the other half was about an inch off. It was pretty exciting when the one half did though...

Angels and demons is sorta of a warm up or an unofficial prequel, its awesome, wxactly the same format as da vinci code and yes robert langdon is in that book too, and angels and demons is very much packed with historical facts as well.... (Goody)

Ps I think I'll have to read both of the books again since I read both of them in like 3 days each I think.... I love reading binges....

I saw an evangelist the other day flipping out about this book! He was yelling and screaming about it and then he threw it out into the garbage LOL. Quality TV programming...

Here's an interesting fact:
Brown states that the heart of the church of S. Sulpice is the point where the nave and transept meet. Really, long before the transept became integrated into the basilican-style churches, it was the Eastern "apse" that was the heart of the church. I'm not quite sure why he would say that. The Crusaders brought the transept to Christian churches in the early 12th century; it was supposed to transform the linear plan of the basilica into a cross shape, representing the crucifix (usually closer to the eastern end, and flanking the apse (the heart...) rather than central). Examples of these churches, pre-transept, are the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem (Constantine's first Christian church, and the location of Golgotha, the "True Cross", and Christ's tomb), and the Basilica of S. Peter in the Vatican (the church given by Constantine to the Pope (then Bishop) (though I can't remember if it still is today?) and the burial place of S. Peter). I think the transept was actually added to Notre Dame (the model for S. Sulpice and many other churches of the time and follwing) in later years, after its initial construction (like the flying butresses and frontal towers)...which further proves the focal point of the church to be the eastern apse.

An apse is like a...semi circular area that can protrude from the end of the church, and is where the main altar is, usually with important Christ-related mosaics on the half-domed ceiling, and stained glass or wall frescos along the walls.

EDIT: Yeah, my parents are really devout Christians and my dad says a lot of bad things about the book (something about how it's evil and the work of Satan?), even though he's never read it, and my mom is avoiding reading it because she has heard bad things from her Christian friends.

they should have special devices there. Most people don't know about them, but I worked at a mmovie theatre once, and they have earphone things.

Yaeh I loved the Da Vinci code, and quite a few of his other books too. I haven't read Angels and Demons yet but I'm looking forward to it, and the movie, well... just can't wait

I am a christian and yeah, some of it really riles me. And what do you expect? If it was true it basically completely destroys the christian faith, how do you think the guy is gonna react?

That's bizarre, I saw a documentary on constantine, golgotha, the true cross and christ's tomb today, so I actually understood what you said

ecept wasn't the true cross burned by attacking muslims? Not that it would matter, it's a peice of freaking wood, if people place any great value on that then they're really missing the point.

Well, I think the True Cross was a series of fragments of the cross rather than an entire crucifix. "It" was kept in a silver box and entrusted, originally, to the Bishop Macarius (who helped Constantine's mother, Helena (reverred as a saint -- female saint = santa) find the True Cross in the first place (in...the 4th century? I'm bad with dates...). Anyway, the addition of the True Cross kind of marked the completion of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

There were MANY fires set to the church. My essay on the church was mainly about the many, many structural changes the church has endured over the centuries. The most devastating was the command given by the Egyptian Muslim Sultan in the 11th(?) century to utterly (I first instinctively wrote this as "butterfly" without the "b"...) destroy the church. I can't remember if it was the Egyptians who stole the cross, or earlier Muslims (a series of fires set to the church beginning about 4 centuries earlier by more local Muslim rulers), but the True Cross was certainly recovered as part of the Crusaders' attempts to rebuild the church (which also included the addition of the transept that I mentioned). The invasion by the Egyptians left only one of three main structures standing of the original church, and the structure is nothing like what it originally was.

Oh...and interestingly, since The Da Vinci Code addresses Constantine and the conspiratorial cover-up of the pagan religions and the importance of the female fertility goddess figures, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (not even POSITIVELY built on the true site of Golgotha (one of two possible locations chosen by Helena and Macarius)) was build on the former site of a pagan shrine to Venus/Aphrodite (also uncertain -- it could have been to Saturn, I think, was the other suggestion...). Macarius was rumoured to have a burning passion to end the reign of the pagan religions, and suggested to Constantine that all pagan shrines and temples in Jerusalem be destroyed (particularly those which in previous times were originally the resting places of Christian churches). It's said that this was more out of spite of the pagans than as a pro-Christian movement, and kind of moves with the arguements Brown makes in the novel...

im a barista (one who prepares and sells fancy coffee drinks and pastries) at a borders cafe and part of my job is obviously keeping all the cafe tables clean and free of books that people leave behind. a lot of people come in, grab a bunch of books, buy some expensive drink, and sit in the cafe and read all day, then leave all the books sitting there for me to reshelve. point of the story: The Da Vinci Code is still the book i have to reshelve the most often. i find like 3 copies left sitting in the cafe everyday.

I'm so going to see the movie! I just finished readin Da Vinci code and was looking forward to start reading Angles and Demons but they didn't have it in the library at that time so I had to settle for Hitch-hiker's guide to galaxy (a good book aswell).

Reading Da Vinci Code got me interested of (different) interpretations of Christian symbols and stuff. I'd like to read more about those...

Oh and there's this documentary about Da Vinci Code on TV on monday here in Finland so have to watch that aswell.

I duno how the movie will work out, I can see them leaving a fair bit out of it.

Angels and Demons is awesome as well. Yeah not really a prequel, more just the same format and same lead character....and there are mentions in Da Vinci code to things like "it's just like in Rome" etc
