Shred 30 Scoring

Post by dp »

I've seen so many things about Shred 30, and I've watched many, but I still don't understand how it's scored. Could someone give me a detailed rundown of how Shred 30 is scored? Thanks.

Adds + (uniques * add ratio). Add ratio: adds / contacts.

I actually wrote "Footbag shred 30 rules" to Google just to show how easy finding this out by yourself would have been:

Shred 30 rules
In shred 30 the goal is to reach as high score as possible. No top limit is involved. The player’s score will be counted according to a formula: adds + (uniques * add ratio), where adds mean the total number of adds you manage to hit in 30 seconds, uniques mean the amount of different unique moves you will hit and add ratio comes from a formula: adds/contacts. won’t be any limit for contacts.

The scoring starts when a player hits/tries to hit his first visible move (basically first 3 add move or higher). For example toe->clip->ripwalk, where ripwalk is the first visible move and toe->clip are preparing moves. If a player drops preparing move it is counted as a drop and time starts from there. Also limit for preparing moves is two. If player hits toe->clip->clip then time starts from the second clipper. All drops/handcathes will be counted as 0 add contacts. Time starts from first contact/attempted contact.

More specific rules
-Only 3 add moves and higher will be counted as unique tricks. Adds will be counted normally from every trick even if it’s 1 or 2 add move
-Drops aren’t uniques
-No x-dex will be used
-Barfly, paradon, double over down and down double down all ending to same side clipper are only one unique trick (and their symposium versions too). Also reaper and double switch over will be same trick. So setting surface doesn’t make more uniques in those tricks. Means also that hand toss dod is equal to normal dod and therefore not a unique trick.

This rule doesn’t affect on moves with a set! fairy ss butterfly<->tapping butterfly are still two unique moves, because they have different sets (fairy<->tapping). Also paradon and tapping butterfly are 2 unique tricks.
-The last move of your run will be the one last *set* before the buzzer

I find it easiest to think about it this way:

Adds*(1+(uniques/contacts))

Thus, if every contact is unique, then you just double your adds. If have of your contacts are unique, then you just multiply your adds by 1.5 and so on.

I was thinking of making a prgram in Visual Basic that would automaticaly score Shred 30 routines. Some features would include:

-Automatic misspelling/move nickname replacement
-Ability to count XDex and Double Down different surfaces (option button)
-Easy interface (type the move name in for each contact, and get a score)
-Automatic Unique counter
-70+ moves (I'll add more if needed, but there's only a limited number of moves that most players use)

I was wondering if anyone would want to use that program, providing it worked without bugs and would accuratly reflect socres. The idea behind the program is that you would video tape the shred 30, watch it once in some-what-slow-motion, and as you see the move type it in. After you watched it , click a button and have the program score the entire routine using the formula (based on the move name).

Anssi left out one important part of the shred-30 score from his rules. It might seem really obvious, too obvious to need mentioning, but I think that it is important for the rules to state this in writing very clearly:

A drop is counted as a zero-add contact.

This is to say, a drop increases the contact count, but obviously doesn't add to the raw add-count, and thus drops decrease your difficulty ratio.

It seems important to me that the rules say "drops are a zero add contact" because otherwise someone might be able to make the argument that they didn't really contact the bag, the bag just fell on the floor, and so the drop shouldn't have any effect on their score at all. But those drops do show up on the score as I pointed out above (if your add count stays the same but you devide it by a greater number of contacts, your difficulty ratio will be lower).

Its an old rule, Caleb, which says that setting surface alone does not make a move unique from a similar move that differs only in that it is set from a different surface. Thus, a butterfly is a butterfly is a butterfly be it set from either toe or either clipper. Performing a move on the opposite side makes it unique. Changing the direction of a dex makes a move unique. Adding another element makes a move unique (butterfly is unique from pixie butterfly). Finishing on a different surface makes a move unique from a move that is otherwise the same (butterfly is unique from soul-train) Performing a move on the same side from a different setting surface doesn't make a move unique unless that setting surface results in another move element to be present (I'm talking about paradox). Thus, in a shred contest, you could count butterfly as unique only twice (one for the right side, one for the left), but you can't get eight unique moves by doing butterfly from four different surfaces per side. Similarly, Paradon and Double Over Down are not unique from one another in this sense.

I would go one step further and say that ripwalk, dimwalk, and tripwalk should not all be counted as unique from one another in competition, or anything else that differs only be setting surface, such as, for instance: torque - toe torque - pixie op osis, or: Magellan - shmoe, or: parkwalk - sidewalk - slapping same butterfly, but so far almost nobody else seems to agree with me. :x

Anyway, we've spent a shitload of time debating this already over the past two or three years right here on this forum, so I'm left to wonder, Caleb, where the hell have you been?

I'm fairly sure there are shred 30 rules in there - Section 508 perhaps? (off the top of my head). Freestyle is definitely part 5 anyway.

Something else to mention - the time starts when you score your first add and your score starts when you attempt your first 3 add. Presumably judges should be skilled enough to know when you're attempting your first 3 add. Any move that is started before the time finishes counts if the player attempts to complete the move after the time - ie. if I hit a spinning set - then the 30 seconds is up and then I drop a double down it counts as a drop. If I handcatch the bag when the time finishes (or drop the handcatch) the last move doesn't count. Again the judges should be skilled enough to be able to tell the difference between attempting a move and not attempting a move.

There is no official ruling about "the" tricks. Typically the "the" adds are not counted and the legitimate adds are counted. For example a "the" barfly" would probably count as a butterfly and score 3 adds. According to the official Australian rules for shred 30s any trick deemed to have a "the" component cannot count as a unique move.
