I f**king love footbag.

Post by funklovesfootbag »

Today, I talked to some people that used to play footbag somewhat regularly but don't play regularly anymore. "It's hard to stay motivated to keep playing footbag," they said.

i don't get what they mean. It seems I get more addicted each and every shred I have. Can't stay motivated?!!?!?! WTF! If anybody has reasons they aren't motivated to keep getting better at footbag i'd like to hear them,

For me footbag has always been like '2 steps forward, 1 step back,' although sometimes you just feel like you are rolling all the way back down the fucking hill. This gets tiring after a while and i question why i bother putting myself through it.
But then i get those good sessions where i play well/learn a new concept/feel some improvement, and that keeps me coming back for more. I guess it also depends how involved you are in the community and with other players. I know pretty much every player in Aus and consider them all friends, and i wouldnt wanna let that go! Its exciting to be at the forefront of a new sport/craze/lifestyle so that is also motivation.
And i like being able to come to each session with other people each week with something to new to show or some new challenge to complete. That also gives me motivation (sometimes hehe)

The physical side can also help your motivation. If you are naturally talented and improve quickly and easily then you will for sure be very motivated and obsessed. If things are always a challenge and improvement is slow as it is with me, you need to find other reasons to keep at it.

I think the longer you play you don't get as excited with footbag..i remember when all i could think of was footbag but not so much like that now...

also if you play footbag just for the improvement factor, then the chances are you wont find it as fun as if you played for other things

I think if you don't have a serious amount of time to dedicate to footbag it can be frustrating. I think I have enough time for footbag, I play a few times a week for a few hours each, but that is only just enough to maintain my current level OR learn some new concepts.

Recently I have spent time learning whirls and trying to increase BOP consistancy, but my atomic is much worse than it used to be and now my stepping sets are getting worse! Just not doing them regularly has caused me to start losing things and that really bites my patootie.

I wish I could solo for hours a day because i've done it before and I know that I can improve so quickly, but I just don't have the time with all the other responsibilities in life.

But really, I always feel like playing footbag these days, even more than I used to, I always have my bag with me, always do some moves any chance I get, i'm addicted, so i'm not too worried about my motivation waining ;).

I only find my obsession with footbag growing!

As I keep getting better I keep getting more stoked and excited.

I guess it really comes down to what you want out of footbag and whether or not you are achieving that. Oh yeah, and whether you are willing to put in however much effort is required to get there.

I see no reason why I should ever stop playing footbag! :D

Wow, haha this is funny. I had my first 'is footbag worth it' thought toward the end of GRASS since I've been footbagging.

The last tournament I went to, I played fairly well and had a blast. So, I drove up to RIT, and the first day I played decent, but not great. I shredded for 4 hours and really wore myself out. That night, Aric was having a small get together at his place. As soon as I get there, there's a litterbox staring me right in the face, and two cats walking around. I'm severely allergic to cats, and after only being there 10 minutes, I spent the next day and a half under the weather. I shredded about 2 more hours that night with my bud Chris Balch, and that was fun. But like I could barely breathe when I was trying to sleep both nights, and I felt sluggish the whole weekend.

It rained heavily pretty much the whole time. We were indoors the whole time, but the rain was still annoying getting to and from places (and drivinng home) My legs were sore/stiff, I had barely any energy, and didn't play well most of the weekend. I lost all 3 times in beer pong, lost 2 bucks (almost a lot more) in addiction to dave, basically got PWNED in every sense of the word.

I found myself playing 4 Square at the very end. I thought 'wow, now I'm old. Cuz I'm not shredding like most of the other guys. I'm playing 4 Square. The thing you do when you're too old for freestyle.' I had a great time playing 4 Square, and it was probably one of the highlights. But man, I felt like 'Can I really do this? Can I really become genuine guiltless? Am I just fooling myself?' I don't care man, I'm gonna keep on drilling and skooling. If Funk breezes past me toward tripless, oh well. But I love this sport, and I'm not giving up. By next tournamment my goal is to be able to hit whirl bsos and drifter bsos (amongst other things) in every string. Period. I did hit whirl bsos and drifter in a string btw, on the last day. And ducking clipper back to back. So it wasn't all bad.

So I'm going to drill like crazy until my one year mark. And then keep on playing and getting better for years til I fall over. Yay Footbag!!!

I find footbag Is like alot of things, and they can get frustrating and you just need to stop for a while. I bet if you visit them more the old spark will return, and they will get back into the sport.

Ive been skating since I was 7 but when I was 10 I lost interest and stopped. A year later, I met some other kids who skated and got back into it, and Ive been skating my heart out for years since!

Sometimes you just need some motivation...so give it to them!!!

Yeah, I find it really hard to stick with footbag a lot of the time, solely on the reasoning of playing footbag. I won't ever be the best, I have certain limitations in my progression, and a lot of time when I feel like I can work past these limitations and invariably get shot down it compounds how dissatisfied with how good I can be. I'll get better, but it's just not how I wish I could get better. Really, what keeps me in the sport is the strong friendships I've cultivated, the amazingly full tournaments that happen so often, and the fact that it keeps me in very good shape. I love footbag about as much as I always have, I think. While my enjoyment from playing and progression has diminished slightly, I have more desire to cultivate my footbag relationships. Also, like Ken, footbag has often been the only thing between me and a very shitty place.

I agree 100%. I always feel after shredding that if I just can't hit something that I should quit. But somehow I just keep on goign back to it evryday working harder and practicing. Its the only way to improve.

I definately agree with the "2 steps forward, 1 step back" sentiment as well. It's hard to stay motivated when 1) you're too busy to fit shredding in much at all and 2) you're not getting very good very fast as a result. It's annoying to see people that started after you completely dominating you a couple months down the road, or when you find that you aren't really improving at all. I think if I had more contact with other people and could make it more of a social thing, rather than just soloing for improvement, I would find footbag a little more addictive. At the moment, it's something I enjoy doing because it requires time and skill and makes me feel unique, which is a big self-confidence booster.

I love footbag. The best part of my day is when I can kick with my friends, and when I get home I just watch footbag videos.

its mostly about how long you have played. i refuse to believe anyone has been playing for 3 or more years without having seriously questioned the worth of footbag once or twice.

Update! Wow, today I had the best session of my life! I hit all types of moves that I have trouble with bsos, and some great strings. Then these french tourist chicks came along and I busted so huge for them. Nice long strings with ducking clipper bsos, whirl bsos, and some bop which is great for me. Ended the session with a ducking mirage hit for the first time to top of the head stall. I'm so glad I didn't 'give up'. I know I wouldn't have, but it's just comforting to know I CAN do this! I Funk'n LOVE FOOTBAG!!!!!

haha, yeah, that's called "getting old." I'm 22 and have only been freestyling for eight months but I know exactly what they mean.
