Is the sport growing?

Post by Eroick »

Im new to the sport. Im really wondering if it is growing or shrinking in terms of players. Is it getting more popular or less? Are more people comming over to it from 'hackysack' or no? You get the idea.

Just Curious

From my few years of experiance I would say it's definatly growing, there are multiple times more players in my city now then there used to be. However nationally (in New Zealand) it's not going so well, we aren't blessed with many footbag evangelists so it seems only to be growing in my city recently and shinking everywhere else, but I think my country is just very unlucky ;).

In Europe, Japan and North America the sport is definatly sky rocketing.

In Austin we have a BAP guy who hasn't played in 4 years and the women's world champ in net. Neither of them play any more. It's dead here and my ressurection spell isn't working. Blech :(

I guess the answers is it's growing in some places and dying in others. In Texas, it's waning. Overall, in the world? Who knows.

Growing. Both in terms of quantity and quality. It just seems like there are so many high level players now. There's so much more readily available content too. Back in the late 90's there wasn't nearly as many shred videos on VHS or online.

Imagine this sport without the internet...

In one of the tricks videos Kenny Schultz (man i hope i spelled that right) mentioned that "when the first tricks tape was made there were only two or three people in the world that could do every move on the tape and now there are literally thousands." I dont know if those are his excact words, but i'm pretty sure there are now even more that can hit every move on that tape, i know i can. I also know that there are many many more people on their way.

the Seattle area used to be booming with hackers and shredders, hell there still are comps every month, but its slowly starting to fade to black (sorry you got a metallica fan here) and its really rare to find a guy who can actually do a simple pendulum, its to the point of getting pathetic, sure there are still the solid hackers, but you have to go to a concert or a guitar center to find a solid hacker. and i never see a good shredder so when i do like one single stall around the hackers their eyes practally fly outta their head. i would like to see bean hacking fade more and Crazy shredding get bigger and bigger

Stobes, what are you talking about?

Rain City Shred (Seattle's footbag club, of which I'm a member, as my location may not be readily obvious) meets one to three times a week and is actually growing again now that the summer season is rolling around. Actually, contrary to your claims, RCS has the largest number of members in a club on footbag.org (although we definitely don't have the most active members). We have, at the moment, four active open level players and several intermediate and novice players that are active as well.

Drop me a PM and let me know when you're available, if you're interested in shredding sometime.

It is my opinion that footbag grows with each little new shredder who looks up to their mother and pleads to get that first crocheted bag.

Hackysack is growing. I'm pretty sure that footbag is growing too. I don't really know if I believe the two are related. I think footbag has been growing pretty much independant of the hackysack scene for the last 8 years or so. The hackysack thing might just be a generational return of a fad.

Footbag and hackysack use similar objects in play, in much the same way that tennis and golf use similar equipment.

Hackysack and footbag have different rules and are practiced differently.

Most people who play hackysack are not looking for something to practice. It's a great activity where anyone can walk into the circle and kick at a bag, even if they suck. Nobody really plays hackysack by themselves, it's a group activity. It's all about not dropping the bag anymore than you have to; the group activity of not dropping the bag is more important than tricks.

I think footbag is spread mostly by being seen. It is seen while people are practicing, via the internet, tourneys, jams, etc.

My friends and I try and mix freestyle into circle kicking as much as we can without being risky and dropping the hack. Even if there are people who dont freestyle hacking with you, later on youll see many of them practicing the tricks next time you hack with them.

oh yeah, you can still go in a hack circle and do a little freestyle, ill go into a hack circle and do a few pendilums or rainbows or just simple adds, and it still is a blast

playing hack and doing a few tricks like atw and spinning kicks, maybe osis passes is a good way to alert people to the existance of footbag freestyle :) I do it all the time.
