Just spent an hour badly writing up some footbag rules

Hmm - long time between posts. Don't really have time for modified much these days. Still been playing footbag heaps though. Had a nice kick today with Brian and James. They're both still slowly improving - both hitting atw (in)>atw (out) and also butterflies now so that's good. Still one sided and they need to skool more but it's good to see some improvement. I took the kick really easy - played in board shorts - guiltless but bop heavy and lots of downtimes ie. not much set moves. Still I was hitting some nice long runs and it's clear that my drilling has been good for my game. I feel fairly motivated to play at the moment so that's good too

. I've been trying to see how many non whirl based fearless I can hit too. I think my best run was matador>blurriest>fog>sailing butter>beta blur>phoenix>pdx torque - which is a fairly nice combo I think. I could probably sneak a couple more in the middle but I think I'm better off drilling components at the moment.

Having another kick on Monday I think - which should be good. Apart from that I've been making lots of footbags and working a lot too.

Edit: Oh yeah and I've resigned as a mod on modified too. - Couple of reasons 1. I've often felt that footbag organisations are held back by people who are members but don't actually do anything and I don't want to be somebody like that and I don't have the time I once had. 2. The policy on censorship on the forum seems to have changed significantly and my approach which was always to use my "powers" as a last resort means that I now do nothing. Anyway it was nice to help for a while. I think I'm the second longest standing mod (after Erik Chan).

So I don't actually have any footbag to report although I've been playing fairly regularly and probably improving.

Some other stuff has been going on and I thought I'd give it a mention anyway.

First apparantly making international news is the mine collapse disaster in some small and fairly insignificant local town (Beaconsfield). This is of course a great example of the emotional manipulation that the media practices. Tasmania has been "in the grips" of a mining disaster according to one paper and today the local paper was saying that finally the "freedom tunnel" is being created. It's surprising that this hasn't some how been linked to the war on terror and being unaustralian. I blame the Muslims (joke). Of course it's a tragedy and will no doubt have lasting effects for the Beaconsfield community beyond the rescue. Interestingly one of the main share holders of the mine is the MacQuarie Bank - who Dyalan told me likes to get as much profit as possible as quickly as possible from its operations with no regard for sustainability - running them into the ground (in this case literally ho ho).

Anyway in other news, I've just finished reading two books - Kingdom of Fear by Hunter S Thompson - which is hilarious, insightful and easily in my top 5 favourite books - I'd rate it as my favourite piece of work by HST. The other book, which in many ways is a great counter point to Kingdom of Fear is Please just F* Off it's Our Turn Now - holding the baby boomers to account. Which is a book by Ryan Heath about the generational problem in Australia - with the baby boomer generation having too much control over the next generations and fucking the next generation over. I think he makes some really good points but the book would have been a great deal better if he wrote it from an objective perspective instead of a personal perspective. I don't think it helps his arguement to be constantly saying "we are so good because..." or even "I should run Australia because..." - replace the "we" with "they" and I think it would come across a great deal better. Anyway an interesting read and something that's been causing a little controversy in the media (run by the baby boomers of course who generally reject his sentiment). I've just started reading Bliss by Peter Carey - which was his first published novel and award winning. Also it was made into a movie - which is one of my favourite movies and the reason I bought the book.

I've been suffering a lot of insomnia lately - which has probably lead to me playing more footbag, reading more and also writing more - which is all good but I'm trying to make an effort to get into more healthy sleeping patterns. I also think I'm going to try and get a second job and finally pay off all my debts and maybe save some money. As if that will ever happen

Anyway speaking of that - I really should be working now...

Yeah, while I'm usually quick to stick the boot in to Mac bank whenever I get the chance, my understanding is that the mine was going under (horray! bad mining puns are fun) so mac bank pumped some cash in to keep it going until it could make some money, which it did upon finding crap loads of gold. Mac bank has no input to the way in which the mine is run, although they are trying to get their investment back before the other creditors which is illegal, unless the other creditors all agreed - the jury is still out as to whether this occured.
Mining is a dangerous thing - indeed this accident doesn't even represent an increase in average annual accident rates. It seems to me there will be alot of people trying to put blame on managment but in the end there was a fuck of big earthquake and people got hurt. It's hardly the fault of the mine operators.

Actually it was only a small eathquake - about 2.4 on the rictor scale I think - which is most likely caused by the act of mining and not a natural thing at all. Mining often causes low level earth quakes and since the mining started there has been a huge jump in the number of small earth quakes reported in the town with some damage to houses and the residents of Beaconsfield had been complaining about the earthquakes to the mining operators for months. There are also a number of reports that the safty of the mine had been called into question before the event occured and the responce of the operators of "It's not appropriate to talk about the safety of the mine while a rescue operation is going on" seems to an admition that there were indeed questions of safety before the event (or else they'd deny the claims). Anyway the media beat up continues. The death of Richard Carlton was really very fortuitous for the media. I'm sure another drama would have had to have been found if he didn't die - considering it's been about 10 days with no actual news happening apart from "they still aren't out and the rescue effort is continuing" - which is hardly worth 5 full pages in Saturday's local newspaper. The front page story was that the only woman to speak to the two miners since the collapse says that they're "cheeky".

Anyway I had an ok kick on Saturday. Nothing amazing, a few long runs and alpine smog>alpine smoke unsealed about 4 times. Argh and I definitely should have sealed it too. Actually my game is feeling a little crappy at the moment - just a bit sloppy and I seem a little less fit than usual. Spent the weekend at my brother's house. Had a fun time. Beat him at chess twice.

So had a session today with james, brian, some chick and Jake (Jay?) who was a guy from the US who's moved to Australia - (Melbourne) and is here on work. I played fairly well I thought, as did James and Brian. Jake was very new but can hit toe stalls both sides and is fairly keen. The girl (I think James's girlfriend although I don't know for sure) wasn't very into it but she did hit a few toe stalls on one side.

Last night I had a big session - spent about two hours drilling my Jason Po sets (fairy sets). and made some huge improvements. Stuff like fairly ss whirl bsos, fairy ducking butterfly both sides (but couldn't do it bsos), flog both sides, blur>fairy butter repeat, fear>fairy ss mirage repeat, fear>smear>atom repeat, 5 consec fears on both sides. It felt really good. I also improved my blenders a lot and my spinning a bit so it was a good session and there is a good chance I'll have another session tonight.

Been a little over a week since I wrote in hear. Been playing a bit of footbag. Working on fairy sets, nuclear sets, downtime stuff, spins. I think that's all. Going to have a drill session soon today. Also want to try and hit a few heinous combos that I've been thinking about. I hit barraging ss clipper>whirr the other day but unsealed so I'd like to hit that properly. At this stage barraging ss clipper is way too inconsistant but it's an awesome move - way cooler than sunil walker which in the majority of times looks crap/jay in my opinion. All the recent ones I've seen were jay or really close to it anyway.

Spent today at work opening envelopes. I had to get to work at 9am too - which is way too early for me especially on monday morning. Anyway money is money.

I've been watching far too much tv lately - although i'm sure I still don't watch that much compared with other people. I was shocked to discover that my brother and his girlfriend watch big brother. There is so much crap on TV. Thank god the beaconsfield thing is pretty much over now - the guys have sold the rights to the story and that's been shown on tv so people can stop caring now.

Oh speaking of which, the crippled little girl who busks at the market was back again on Saturday - nauseating. I had to go play somewhere else. I would feel better about it if her whole act wasn't such emotional manipulation and if it wasn't clear that so much effort had gone into the whole thing - the marquee, the speakers, the headset - the fact that she has both her parents and her brother helping her - it's such a horrible example of exploiting age and her physical handicap. Would anybody give her money if she was 30 and fat? Of course not. Why are people so shallow? She must make at least a thousand dollars in a day though - which is good money for somebody without any actual talent at what they do. I hate the way that neither her, her brother or her parents look like they're having any fun too.

Oh talking earlier of TV - Am I the only person who doesn't know that avocado extracts are good for washing your hair? It's amazing how much "information" is given without any reasoning behind it. I guess my knowledge of what is good for your hair is fairly limited.

hmm this is a bit of a rant.

Oh in other news my brother and girlfriend are going to be having a girl. A few of the names that have been thrown out are "Adelaide", "Charolette" and "Scorpion's Tail" - although I don't think I get much say

Good one, my sister and brother-in-law aren't finding out the sex till the birth. Personally I don't understand why you wouldn't, what's the difference except that if you find out now then you can start planning the gender programming by buying the appropriate coloured jumpsuits/bibs etc. I saw the ultrasound photos the other day, its pretty amazing. You can get the ultrasounds on dvd now too. Crazy.
