Royce Gracie Vs. Matt Hughes UFC 60

Post by alex »

Anybody else excited for this fight? Any predictions?

In my opinion there are only 2 possible outcomes to this fight.... Royce loses by decision, or Royce wins by submission.

if Royce loses it'll be KO or TKO. Royce hates getting punched, and I think Matt is too good on the ground to get totally dominated. He's going to bloody Royce up and Royce's corner will throw in the towel at round 3.

Did you see the first Ortiz vs. Shamrock? It's going to be like that - Royce all swollen up and Hughes without a spot on him. I like Royce Gracie, but the sport has changed since he was king. Sure Royce used to submit guys that had fifty, sixty, seventy pounds on him, but mostly they were dudes who didn't know Jiu Jitsu from a hole in the ground.

Although, I did see him put an arm bar on a huge samoan or hawaiian guy who was aparently into jiu jitsu, so I don't know. I don't actually like Hughes that much, and I think his first title win was bogus (he was choked out by triangle choke, and then fell, knocking out the guys who was choking him) and his win over George St. Pierre was a fluke - St. Pierre's ground work is hella better now. Any way, we'll see. I no longer have Spike, so I can't watch fights on tv - only download the actual UFC ppv matches. That's okay though, I wasted way too much time on fight nights...

Can you tell I watch WAY too much UFC? Discuss...

Royce has NEVER been pummeled in any match ever. If you think Shamrock is even in the same league as Royce you are out of your mind! :) Royce's defensive skills on the ground are way too good to simply be knocked out... especially if Matt is in his guard. Even though I think Matt Hughes is a cocky little shmuck, I know hes really good. Right now Royce is actually training in California with Royler (his brother) as his coach. Royce is having sparring matches against people that have the same body type and strength as Matt Hughes. So he is going to be well prepared for the match... However, the fact of the matter is that if Royce was given enough time, he would submit Matt. The rules stand that he will basically have no time at all to work for a submission... especially since you know Matt will be specifically trying to keep the match standing up. The fact that Matt is an excellent wrestler combined with his solid jiu jitsu skills I don't expect Royce to catch Matt in a submission very easily. Keep in mind that Matt has actually competed in Jiu jitsu tournaments before and did pretty well. Matt's skills + time limits = mosty likely a decision win for Matt. However, I will be rooting for Royce! As far as I'm concerned, if Royce can simply not get beaten up by the end of the match using nothing but Gracie Jiu Jitsu, the match will have done nothing but prove how effective jiu jitsu is as a form of self-defense.

Its true most of Royce's opponents had no idea about Jui Jitsu, while Hughes has SERIOUS submission ability, plus the ability to FUCK you up with his striking. Gracie is going down if he can't get a submission in the first 1:30. Or if Hughes lands more than a couple stikes. Or if the laws of physics prevail.

I give this one to Hughes hands down.

He wasn't beaten up like Shamrock was,he merely broke his foot from a kick. What I meant was that you won't see Royce getting his face wailed on.

Gracie is going down if he can't get a submission in the first 1:30.
I seriously disagree with this statement. I believe that as Matt Hughes gets more fatigued he will open himself up to being caught in a submission. It is a lot easier to catch someone in a submission hold when they are tired than when they are fresh. The problem is that the rounds aren't long enough for Royce to just wear Matt out.

Matt Hughes will just play defense and wrestling. Hoyce can beat him up on his feet or the ground. Look for a boring fight as Matt just hides in a ball and Hoyce waits for his opportunity.

I was pretty disapointed with that fight over all. Seems like everytime I get all psyched for a good fight it ends up sucking - like Franklin vs Loiseau in UFC58. At least that one went the distance. Friggin Royce Gracie. Lots of good fights at 60 though. That knee by Fisher was nuts. I love how he just jumps up and walks away after.
