Your Panel cut outs and how you do it?

I was wondering if theres a better way to cut out panels that minimizes time, and minimizes facile waste as well? I heard that mosher uses magnets to cut out his templates, are there any other ways than just cutting panels out of a sheet of ultrasuede?

that looks about the way i do it.... i just try and position the templates the best way to save material... i carefully draw my lines with a tiny fine tip sharpie and once they are all traced out i cut them with some small expensive scissors... i always cut them out from the inside edge of the line line.

Yeah I used to do it that way, now I use a modified version of mosher's way to cut panels. It wastes some fabric, but after you get the hang of it, even this becomes minimal.

Step 1. Cut off a strip of facile the width of your template, and as long as say 5 or 6 panels

Step 2. Fold strip of fabric 5 times, and place template on top, securing with thumb and index finger.

Step 3. Cut around template.

You now have 5 perfect panels and it took maybe 1-3 minutes to do it!

The panels may not come out perfect at first, but with practice you can make just as good of panels as the ones you traced out, in a fraction of the time!

isnt that a waste of suede?
i draw each individual panel in a special pattern, then individualy cut them, and place them on the origanal template, and trim them individually.

ive made a cardboard and plastic guide thingy for quickly outlining my shapes, with no drawing lines.

ive cut it from a plasic box thing, and just a cardboard sheet... it works pretty well if youve got a sharp x-acto knife.

ill post pics tomorro or something. well see if the thread continues or not...

if anyone were to ask me one day if i had a secret to how i made my bags ever so wonderfully nice and ultimate shreddable to the max, the only thing i could tell em would be i spend wayyyyy too long cutting out my panels perfectly. im not OCD about it, but i take my time and focus. my bags are all perfectly round, if i do say so myself, since uhhhh number 3 i believe haha.

if your panels are geometrically sound, and your stitches are even kinda sloppy, your bag will still be spherical.

if your panels are pretty good, and your stitches arent perfect, you're fucked.

well thats my crude noob opinion, but i like to think when i put my mind to analyzing the dynamics of something like this, i can do a pretty damned OK job. i have massive experience in the respectable fields of both origami and poking stuff with sharp things, even if im nowhere near being a pro stitcher.

Did you even look at the pic? Haha. It IS precise. You do have to master the cutting technique, you want to kinda hold the scissors at an angle so the blades are VERY slightly inward on the bottom part of the panels. That takes practice. But, whatever floats your boat I guess. I take about 7 min tops to cut out my panels now. I bet I could get it down to 5.

i looked at the pic and they do look pretty good... but when cutting that many stacked on top of each other, all it takes is a little twist of the wrist and the bottom one will come out a different size from the top one...

that is cool that you got the technique down.... i would probably use it if i was mass producing them... but if i want a nice choice made one i will do it one by one, it just makes me feel better about it knowing they ARE perfect

eh. my panels are weird shaped only if my template is fucked up. but i make a new one every couple bags, so's it dont keep messing up if it is already.

the only thing that messes me up on round-ness is wheni made a crooked stitch, or my panels werent lined up very well.

but im pretty precise, and my stitches are pretty straight. so no bag has been PERFECT , but usualy end up with 1-2 flaws per bag.

my panels come out straighter this way then they ever did with tracing and cutting one by one

Oh, one other thing I forgot to mention. It's crucial to have good, sharp sewing scissors. The ones I use are the standard orange handled small sewing scissors you find at any craft store. They work wonders, and make very precise cuts.

The thing I don't like about threads like this and the filler ones is that it just makes me want to say "USE YOUR FUCKING IMAGINATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I kinda don't like people going and giving out my techniques that I shared with them semi-privately at a tourny like it's something they made up.

Is it really so hard to be creative?

Eh, I'm over it Tom. You use your imagination. We'll keep trading secrets so we can all have nice bags to play with without having to spend 35 bucks on them.

Oh, and PS- Don't give 'stitching tutorials' at tournaments if you don't want your precious secrets to get out.

alrighty then dude, thanks chris, ill most definately try your technique cause it does seem to look super accurate, and would save me a bunch of time instead of individually cutting out panels, on onwards to the crafting/fabric scissors thanks dude, oh and ps Your bag is the best 32 ever! ...period

are you kidding? everyone here is infringing on copyrights ALREADY, making a standard 32 panel as most of us do... and selling them? So, Tom, i dont understand you getting upset about someone being able to make bags faster because they're using "your" method for producing a product thats not yours in the first place. were all here to shred and since this IS the bags section its fair to assume most of us are stitchers as well. we all make a very similar product unless im missing some loophole in the assembly that exempts u...

if anyone ever wants to know how i make my bags ill be perfectly glad to show them pretty much everything, although that takes most of the fun out of it

. but when my buddy just wants to make one for himself ill give him everything he needs down to the last polypellet. otherwise yeah people, the exploration of methods and slight modifications to style is what its all about anyway. why not share the knowledge so we can all have a super-evolved bag instead of bickering at an inane level about our stupid bags! lol peace out all
