Ankle weights?

Post by smokefree »

I was wondering would it be advisable or illadvisable to play footbag in ankle weights, they're 5 pounds each i think and make my feet relatively heavier. Will this throw off my game or will it help me master gravity???

Very, very bad idea; unless you want to hurt yourself.

odds are it will put a lot of stress on ur knees - it's a bad idea.. it'll cause major muscle imbalances at the very least. Instead try jumping over a milk crate on 1 leg or do some squats or bike to strengthen ur legs. Building strength takes time and rest. I'm sure lots of people have other suggestions.

though it would be bad for shredding, it would eventually strangthen your legs.

I sometimes do karate with ankle weights for the same reason.

Lol chances are nobody in this thread has actually tried this.

But I have .

I have a set of 2.5KG ankle strap weights. The best way to use them is putting them on and going for a run or doing some weight bearing exersize like leg raises.

I initially wanted to shred in them, but it's the absolute best way to nail all your joints. You knees and hips are used to moving the weight of your legs, as soon as you add 5kg to that weight you are straining your joints, if you try to do some activity you find dificult without leg weights then you will cause damage very quickly.

It's also not very practicle, most leg weights are bulky and will get in the way a bit and tend to slip up and down your ankle. You also lose control as you have extra weight on your legs that isn't balanced by muscle so it's hard to change momentum for things like stalling a legover.

The only thing footbag related I would consider doing in leg weights is maybe light air shreding, just tiltless or something.

I wore my leg weights back in highschool under my school pants for about 2 or 3 months to try increase leg strength by constantly bearing weight. It felt pretty cool taking them off because I felt like I could move flippin fast after wearing them the whole day, but one time a kid spat on me and I coulden't catch him with the leg weights on so I decided to stop wearing them. I can't say I noticed any long term effects of using the leg weights this way, I have gained way more leg strength just shreding as much as possible :).

I use leg weights when I go for walks. I have tried tiltless shred with them, and from that experiance alone I would never even consider trying new (or hard) tricks.

Thanks for the helpful information, I bought these leg weights about last year, I guess ill just lend them to my friend who wants them to practice double bass drumming... which is probably another bad idea. I tried it once for about an hour a few weeks ago and could do basics. I used to walk around with these 24/7 for about a week and then was like.... ehhhh.

The best advice I can offer is to do leg raises with them to strengthen your knees.

As a matter of fact, I need ankle weights to do just that. Hmm...

hahaha

that sounds awful! Barring the possibilty of being unable to catch those who spit on you, might it still be beneficial to wear ankle wieghts around all day until right before you shred? Your feet would feel weightless! Even if you were to just do this before a tourney or sumthing, it sounds to me like it could only help... am I wrong?

Depends if the competition is to see who can overdex the bag by the most or not. You would probably miss every stall

I meant try wearing ankle wieghts all day up until a shred session, when I would take them off.

This experiment is not worth buying a pair of ankle weights for though, so I prolly will never try it anyway
