Where are they now?

Post by HG »

I remember a year or two ago, we were having a discussion on who would make BAP this year or the next. The list we had come up with was very big. And it seemed very possible that many people would make it in.

Anyways, it has been a while, and many of those DIDN'T make BAP. Some specific ones I am thinking of are

Paul Cronjaeger
Stefan Siegert
Justin Dale
Ricky Moran
Renato Zulli?
Chris Kovacs (z?)
Oleg Donner
Ilja
Ryan Thomas

I know most of these guys still play, but here is a thread with all the old specualations http://modified.in/footbag/viewtopic.ph ... p&start=20

Just give your thoughts on what happened to these guys. They were at the top 2 years ago, but arent in BAP. I am specifically interested in hearing where Oleg Donner and Renato Zulli are in footbag. But oh well.

Ryan Thomas just finished up college he was very busy with school. I met him a couple months ago in Houston. He hadn't shredded in months and was still hitting fearless strings in climas and a sandbag. No doubt he could be in BAP if he had the time to devote to footbag. Insanely good shredder and hell of a nice guy too. So what if he's not in BAP?

I saw these guys in Montana, there is some video footage that James Randall put up that has these guys in it. Both of them are still sick as shit, and they both can throw down some crazy strings. My guess? You'll be hearing of these guys a lot more in the years to come.

Justin and Ricky are both tearing it up. Both of their styles and form are better than ever. They've refined their games a lot since that Worlds and are both playing much better now (at least in my opinion, they may think differently). I believe both of them are still way more than capable of making BAP.

Ilja - I heard he wasn't shredding very much this Worlds.
Paul - I'm sure he still plays... BerlinShreds videos anyone?
Stefan - Didn't he get an honorable mention for BAP this Worlds?
Reni - There was some footage on a video of a Swiss Tournament of him, so I would venture that he's still playing and improving.
Chris Kovacs - Ask David Clavens, but I've heard he isn't taking footbag as seriously anymore.
Ryan Thomas - I think he made a post about moving somewhere near Chris Holden and wanting to get back into freestyle.
Oleg - No clue!

All of this except the Justin/Ricky related posts is speculation. :) Please don't take any of this as fact or repeat it in such a manner. That is how rumors are started.

Yeh Stefan got an honourable mention for BAP, this guy makes finals in nearly every tournament he goes to!

Ilja played alot in preparation for his Worlds routine and i think, in my opinion, may have worn himself out early in the tournament and i didnt see him play much again. He is super good though and has one of the most fluid styles out. If he plays well in Frankfurt then he should be inducted too i reckon.

Reni was injured like aaaalll the time last year and he didnt compete at Worlds, or play for that matter i think. He has a brilliant style and wicked linking ability, if he stays uninjured this year he should make BAP id say.

Paul Cronjaeger is really awesome too but he has a chronic knee injury that prevents him playing much more than 1 hour at a time i think, or so i remember from last year. He may have beaten it though...

Ricky and Justin could make BAP '07 if they tried hard enough.

Chris had an operation on his neck so he had to take like 4 months off. I think he's going to start schooling hard again this summer.

My thoughts on BAP are pretty well known.

I have never voted on BAP inductions, but I've been in the room on occasion at Worlds when potential BAP are being discussed. Based on that, and my own observations, most of the people on Henry's list were not inducted because they:

1. Didn't attend worlds.
2. Didn't play well enough/visibly enough at Worlds.
3. Only had one or two enthusiastic BAP supporters, but most other BAP held opinion #2.

Lynton Stephens is not in BAP, probably only because he never attended worlds.

just an addition to Ken's post, Reni WAS at Worlds 05 but didnt compete or play much.

Lynton probably would be BAP if he had gone to Worlds during his prime playing years, if only for all the pioneering toe moves he came up with.

Absolutely NO offense intended at all, but I've always been a little bothered when people make claims like these. "if so-and-so had been at Worlds, they would have gotten in."

The fact is, BAP inductions are hard to predict. Player X may dominate in their home country when there is no pressure or good competition, but choke at worlds. But I've seen lots of good players choke when it comes to playing at Worlds, or playing in BAP circles. So playing strong at home isn't always a great indicator of whether or not somebody will make BAP.

Even if we assume that somebody will play to their full potential at Worlds, it's not always guaranteed that that person will make it in. A lot of it depends on what is considered "in" that year. Jere Linnanen was inducted in 2004 because he was consistent and had long strings. I personally feel his game was too one dimensional (90% clipper based, 80% stepping sets), and it's possible that in the future somebody who plays like him wouldn't get in. In 2000 Jon Schneider got in, because BAP admired his uniqueness and originality. Those traits might not have been enough to get him in in 1999, but in 2000 they were. Would they get him in in 2006? I'd like to think so, but again, you never know. Why wasn't Adrian Verhoef inducted in 1998? Did people really think Kyle Crawford was a better player? Did people think Eli was better that year?

Other times, a good player will be denied one year, even if he is good enough, just as a way to motivate them to come back better. MacKenzie in 97, Penske in 2001. Some years, BAP sets a limit on inductions (2 to 3 in 2001). Other years, they invite everybody (2004 had like 8 BAP inductions).

Was Lynton a great player in his prime? Probably. Frankly, there's not a lot of footage, and I have no idea about his consistency. He certainly invented a lot of huge tricks. But again, BAP depends on lots of factors: can you play under pressure, string length, consistency, creativity.

Personally, I don't think it's that healthy to care a lot about what people think. That's why I'm not in BAP, and that's why I feel obliged to comment in topics about people getting into BAP; to provide an alternate view. Whether or not Lynton or anybody else would have gotten into BAP shouldn't matter. What matters is that they had fun, that they reached high levels of personal achievement. Speculating about BAP induction is almost impossible, but beyond that, I don't think it even matters.

Regarding Ken's comments - while I agree with the sentiment that speculating on who would have got into bap if the planets had have aligned is pointless - I think it's still a fun topic. I get frustrated sometimes with how serious people take bap but I've always enjoyed speculating on pointless things :P.

I have no doubt that Lynton would have made Bap if he had have attended worlds around his prime. Even as late as 2003 he was good enough I think.

I'm curious as to who people think will make it this year. I think the problem these days is that there are too many really good people out there who I don't think are going to worlds - so it makes it hard to know who will make bap.

Phil M is a shoe in if he goes (putting the pressure on him).
David Clavens and Johnny Suderman also I think are easily of the level although I've never played with either. In fact I put David in my top 7 of best players in the world (at 7th).

ie.

1. Vasek
2-6 (to hard to number)
Felix, Honza, Lon, Penske, Jorden
7. Clavens

Although having not played with any of those players, there is plenty of likely hood that I am wrong. Oh and Ricky Moran would probably get in there somewhere if I got to see a video of him and he was playing as well as just prior to his injury a few years ago.

Apart from those four players (Phil, Ricky, Johnny and Cleaver) I have absolutely no idea. I wonder if none of those players show up if there is anybody who will get bapped.

Speaking of BAP - I dislike Dylan Fry's bap name - "Stylon Dylon" - I understand that he has good style but there is already a footbagger named "Dylon" or rather Dyalan - and considering they may well be living in the same city in a few months time, it could lead to confusion. Also it sounds wanky.

So I've thought of some new names for Dylan:

Dylan "don't ask me about vegitarianism" Fry
Dylan "Phillip J" Fry
Dylan "Baked not" Fry (ied)

I like the futurama one the best :P
