GAH, great thread. I love playing chess. There isn't anything i'd rather do ever than play chess. I play it against my family, i play it against my friends, I play it against strangers online, i play it against myself. If anyone wants a war we ought to play on yahoo.

no more flame wars. we settle this shit on the checkered inferno.

Good to see other people on modified play :D , yeah I thought it might be good to have a chess discussion thread, where ppl could throw around ideas and ask questions, etc.

I like to play, though I rarely do. As a result, I'm probably not all that good. I can accomplish the noble feat of not making a fool out of myself in untimed games, but speed chess DESTROYS me... :(

Yeah don't worry, a lot of people find speed chess hard and most of the best games are long ones.

I consider myself intelligent, I'm really good at math, and I'm good at most things I try.....

........but I can't play chess to save my life.

It is an interesting game, but I can't think the way a chess person thinks. I can't see the moves in my head. Like, good chess players can see 10 moves ahead....I can't see 1 move ahead.

I probably have a 10% win ratio. It's sad.

Oh well, I'll stick to something I'm good at, like Monopoly.

No, I don't play soccer. Yes, there are competitions. 4 years. Lots of practice.

I like chess, but am pretty terrible at it.
I play against one of my friends every now and then and always get butchered.
Any one have any quick tips to improve my game?

Carl, if you really can't get anywhere, the first step for you ought to be just setting up a pawn defense, alternating with putting pawns either two or one spaces from from their starting line. Don't do it linearlly, but just put a few pawns in spots along your now created line. From their bring your rooks into the game, and then just try and survive.

Carl a good tip is: before you move look at the square you moving the piece to and see what your opponent will be able to do after your move.

yeah I played Janis - he beat me twice in about 20 moves each game. I made him think once though. Also he was drunk.
