Thanks everyone.
Nice ones, Zeke. Same with the admin thread.
Chrissy, no, you were on time with the birthday wishes. Three hours later wouldn't have been my birthday anymore because it was 6.6.6.
My birthday BBQ was a success.

Yes, all in one breath.

The beast was roaming the earth on 6.6.6.

I find it funny that just about everyone I know happened to get burned over the weekend.

Goth? No. Just able to appreciate an under appreciated form of art.

I rented this in case we got bored later, which we didn't. Too bad.

Oh, and Jason and Jennie got me a cake from The BUTTERY. Yum.

I typed some random-ish stuff over the last week.
I am happy being someone's girlfriend, I'm happy with "girlfriend" being my title, but I'm not okay with "_______'s girlfriend" being my name. That's my personal taste, so I try not to call people _____'s b.f./g.f. if I can find out their name or think I'll be interacting with them at all.
At some point during this "growing up" thing, change becomes something you have to work for more than something that just happens. You don't automatically reset to being a good person without conscious thought and effort. Less people feel that they can help you through being a jerk (or selfish, close-minded, negative, whatever it may be) and set you on the right path, so it's even more work for you to recognize it and work on it. My favorite people who are older than I am are constantly working on making themselves and their lives "better." Respect.
I'm on my top 10 list of people I like to spend time with.
Eventually, I will end up in the sort of place that I visited as a child, took pictures of, read books about, and I will decide the impression I give while I'm there.
One year closer.
In the last year I've developed some great friendships, found myself with a crew of foobag players around me, seen the scene here grow so much, hosted my first event (with two of my good friends), gone to events, continued to live with people I love, and kept in touch with many people who are important to me.
I've also lost touch with some people and I wish I wouldn't have. Not talking with someone is like a... it only gets worse when you ignore it, then one day you find it impossible to fix. I know, not really, but...
I didn't really set many concrete New Year's resolutions, but the few that I sort of thought I might do have been getting done for the most part.
Yesterday morning the first thing that happened to me on my birthday was that I found out that I'm now an Administrator on Modified.in. Nice.
I used to write notes to myself to find months or years later. I left myself surprise money too- in books, underneath stuff. I wish I still did that, I know I'd appreciate it.

Well, I wasn't born on beast day, but it was my birthday. Can I still instill fear in you? Please? The day I was born, June 6th 1984 was the 40th anniversary of D-Day. If I live to age 82, I'll have another neat birthday, 6/6/66. But 6/6/6 definitely wins.King Monkey wrote:Im so glad you werent born on beast day... now i dont have to fear you for the rest of my life

I should be asleep.
I am no where near being able to sleep. In less than 10 hours I'll be meeting up with the first footbag player, and then it will only get better.
Yesterday I decided to try to play footbag a little to see if it helped to loosen me up. Nope. I did 43 clipper>op clipper drifter style, maybe my record. I did something else which was boring but still good, don't remember what that was. I'll probably be playing 4-Square at the event more than anything else.
Happy Friday.

I'm going to ask anyone who has pictures of this event to let me get a copy of them. Anything would be appreciated because I didn't take any pictures at this event so I'm counting on others.
I suppose I'll start at the beginning of the day on Friday.
I woke up hours earlier than I needed to because I was so excited. That hasn't happened in I-don't-know-how-long. Fletch and I were set to pick Grayson (Gray) Chadwick up at the bus station in downtown Santa Cruz at 12:30pm. Pulling into the bus stop I told Fletch to make a right at the wrong place, and as soon as he turned we saw the big Do Not Enter signs. Suddenly there was a siren behind us.
Yay, even doing errands for the event felt good on Friday. The three of us dropped stuff off at the venue and set up the chairs. After doing some other odd junk, we met up with Dat, Ken, Nate, Zeb, and Kyle at my house. There was a session there while we waited for Chris and Ben Enwright, who were brothers traveling from Humboldt County on their way to New Mexico. Chris E. was moving everything he owned, all in his pickup truck. As soon as they arrived, we carpooled and caravaned over to the wharf where we met up with Jeremy. I liked that there were some people who watched, and even better was that some people joined, but it wasn't crowded to the point that you're worried about kicking people walking by. Not that I was kicking. But still. I didn't get to tear anyone away from the shred to go ride a roller coaster and Ken didn't get his ice cream, but besides that it was a great time. From there, the group headed over the the Player's Party at 7pm at 99 (minus 12) Bottles of Beer. A good chunk of people showed up. Mike Hansen and his mother Jean (a good name for mothers), Joe Crain, MattO, never mind, I'll miss too many people. A lot of people showed up. Lon and others went across the street to get in some full hacks, and I guess they met a really good circle kicker who just seemed really drunk when I saw him. Maybe it hadn't hit him eariler. I was glad that people seemed to like the food and beer selection there.
After we left 87 Bottles we headed over to Jeremy's to drop stuff off, then went to the venue for some 4-Square. Yes, we are SO cool that we got the keys and security code so we could have indoor late night sessions. There were a few fun looking games and circles. I couldn't play because for the last few days my back had been worse than it has been at any point this year. Horrible. But I figured a lot of it could be that stress made me tense up and things in my back were just too tight. I think that was it, because half way through Sunday I felt SO much better. Anyway, this is getting too far out of order. After hanging out there for a while people headed back to Jeremy's which was less than two minutes away by car. On the way, I got a phone call from Nick Landes. I asked how things were going and he said, "shittacular" because his ride had fallen through and he was stuck at the San Jose Airport. I used Jeremy's car to go get him and Nate offered to come with. How nice of him. We pulled up at the airport and Nick was there at the curb waiting for us. The ride home seemed to go so quickly. They talked about competitions and how they both feel that Rippin Run and Last Man Standing are so much fun. Nate talked about Rippin Run being his favorite competition. (pay attention to that for later.) After we got to Jeremy's place I went back home to sleep. I slept well, I think. Oh yeah, I made that blog post, huh? 6 hours of sleep is too little for me.
Saturday:
Again, I woke up early- before my alarm went off. Weird! Fletch and came over to burn some last minute CD's for the event, and I left him and Dave at my house because I didn't want to be too late to the event opening. I got there but was locked out because the key and code hadn't arrived yet. (It was amazing that Freestyle players were up and at the site at about 10am. I mean, seriously, think about that.) I was happy that I was able to be a good hostess and provide people with Rice Krispies Treats while they waited. I met Tom Swagerty, his brother (I didn't catch his name), and his parents.
The key got there and we opened the place up. Party on!
The shred was awesome to watch, and so was the competition. I wore a special birthday suit to watch the competition. We'll see if Dustin's mom's picture turns out. Watching the competitions was as wonderful as I had hoped it would be. Those guys (and lady) shined. Oooh, surprise! Red showed up near the end of competitions. He had sent me an e-mail a few days earlier saying that he was sorry that he wouldn't be able to make it but he was sure it would be a fun time and that Nick would represent for their crew. What a sly guy. Jeremy organized the lunch run for sandwiches from Erik's Deli Cafe- which was a good choice on Jeremy's part. Yum. After lunch there was a Novice competition. I had really wanted to have a Novice competition because I feel like the jump from never competing to competing Intermediate is bigger than it should be. I wanted locals and beginners to have a chance to show off what they could, and see how much they could improve with a little effort. At my first event, I remember there being a kicking contest sort of thing for random people walking by. I wasn't doing anything so I ran it for a while. People had to try to get at least 10 kicks to get a Cliff Bar and some kind of Hacky Sack sort of bag. I couldn't do 10 kicks (I could barely do 3 or 4) and I decided that by the next year I would be able to do 10 kicks. I was able to + some. Back to the present, I was also excited about the idea of having the SCI be several people's first competition. Selfish, huh? Sort of. I was especially happy to have of Gray and our little Fletcher Funk have their first times competing or even attending an event be at ours. Having the entire floor was cleared for the Novice comp is not something that I would have happen again. It was a miscommunication or something, but it wasn't planned to happen that way. No matter what, seeing our new local shredders come out and step up, and our local circle kickers do the same was great.
I wasn't playing, so I made rounds talking to people sitting down. I was happy that there were so many non-players there. Parents, friends, community members. We had a special guest, Constance Constable a woman's record breaker in consecutives-- I'd like to invite you to check out an almost random snipet of footbag history that I came upon when searching for some information on Constance.
Outside people played Net on the soccer field. There were small wooden ramps for skateboarding that a few people messed around with. People were playing with a flying disc for a while. Of course there were a few circle kicks happening outside too. This venue seemed just about perfect to me. Field for net players, basketball court for outside shred/random fun, inside a thinly carpeted floor, a stage, bathrooms and water fountain very close by, and a sound system and microphone installed so it was as loud as we wanted. There were chairs already there and set up, all we had to do was move them to the walls. We didn't have to bring anything except for music to play and a cooler for drinks. It's really hard to ask for anything more.
After the event, people either went to Jeremy's to clean up, or they went straight to dinner at the Rio Del Mar Mexican Cuisine on Soquel Ave.. My margarita was so good. Andrew Lecher didn't like his so he gave it to me. The one flaw with dinner was that I hadn't expected that many bodies to come to dinner. When I made the reservation I had asked the owner if there was room to expand the party if more than __ people came. She said outside seating and booths would be available, and we did end up using them. Jeremy's Parents bought me dinner as a birthday present. I'm sad that I didn't get to hear his father play the banjo at all during the weekend. I'm told that he's very good, and that he had it with him. I remember Chris Pinkus having some good dinner conversation about movie plots, which probably led to our conversation on Sunday about scary movies.
Oh yeah, another thing that we did not so well was that we over-scheduled the schedule by a little bit. The timing for the bonfire was wrong, so we ended up just skipping it. Sorry all. We went back to Jeremy's place and hung out. Thank you to Fletcher Funk for being my designated driver. A few people (me, Fletch, Sunny, Jim, Ken, Dave, Andrew L., little Cameron, Chad, Joe, Nick, who else? I think I'm missing someone(s)) wanted to go to the Boardwalk to go on some rides and hang out. By the time we got there it was closed. I feel a little lacking as a host for not checking the times before people arrived in town. Rats!, no roller coasters for Emily this weekend. Oh well, we went to the arcade instead. There was a little bit of group video gaming, I played pinball then I went to the ticket-giving machines. Memories: The only two real birthday parties that I had until the BBQ last week were at places that had ticket giving games. At Chucky Cheese's for my 7th birthday, where I was really creeped out by the idea of a guy in a giant rat suit spanking me seven times, and my 11th birthday at Fun Harbor where I won the Rat Race game and won 150 tickets or so when I hit the jackpot. 2006: Joe and I faced off with Skee-Ball, then someone....who was it, Andrew?... came and broke my record. I went to use some more tokens up and tried a game where you try to drop a bouncy ball down at the right time to get it into the Jackpot hole. I dropped and of course it didn't go in the jackpot hole, but the holes had rotated at the right time enough so that on the third or so bounce, it went into the jackpot. YAY! Joe and I went to get him a Santa Cruz shot glass at the prize counter, and I got a matching one. The guy behind the counter gave us an extra one for free, how nice of him.

People thought about playing miniature golf, but somehow that got changed to walking on the beach. I hung out on a bench with Fletch because at that point it hurt to walk or stand. I could feel the actual spot of pinchage in my back, yuck. After leaving the boardwalk we tried going to a restaurant on the wharf, but it was closed. Stupid Time, ruining all our fun.
Back to Jeremy's. I don't remember what was going on when I got there, computer games? Scrabble, maybe? At some point I decided to have the "Pajammy contest" which I hadn't actually planned out. Something to improve on next year, I guess. Or maybe I'll just cut it out. I hadn't really expected anyone to have pajamas, so I wasn't disappointed that only a few people came prepared. I guess I didn't give enough of a warning because after I had given away the prizes Sunny came out in real pajamas so I felt pretty bad.
Sponge Bob pants won 2nd place:

and Strawberry Shortcake pants won 1st prize:

I don't remember what else happened there that night, I'll have to read someone else's blog for that chunk of time to come back to me. I know that at some point Mike Hansen and I went to the front room to figure out money stuff. Thank goodness for Mike Hansen. I don't understand how one person has that much time/energy/thinking ability to give to others. Thank you Mike. After he did all of the work of figuring how much money we had for prize money and all, we figured out how much stuff we'd have to sell to break even. After we sell some more shirts, we'll be there! Stoked. Thank you to Jeremy's rich-ass for fronting all of the cash for the event; it was a lot. Went home for another good night of sleep. My back wasn't digging the idea of sleeping on a floor. With 20 other people.
Sunday:
Off to the event again. I set out the RKT's for people to eat, along with some watermelon that wasn't so great. It tasted like water. Sunday the only real scheduled event was 4-Square at 11:30, which was pushed back to wait for some people to show up. I felt that I did particularly poorly for my own standards. But, I don't owe anyone any apologies, so I won't feel bad about it. I had fun and was happy to see the game from the inside of the squares. That's the best view.
Uh, I'm getting lost at this point in the post. Right, so I played a little freestyle on Sunday and stepped into two 4-S games at different points, but didn't stay in for long.
After the finals of 4-S and Sunny got 2nd place and Steve won first place, we did the award ceremony. It was a little messy, like how Sunny won stuff that Daryl had donated and someone else won multiple water bottles, but most people seemed pretty happy with what they got. If anyone is left unsatisfied with their prize, please let me know.
Hey! Carol and Ahren! They came for part of the day on Sunday, which was good enough for me. I felt bad for not playing with them or actually getting to spend a lot of time talking with them, but I'm betting they understood. Ahren got a few pictures while there, here's one:

Ken helped motivate people to head my way to order pizza. We went to Straw Hat Pizza. I knew it was good pizza and fairly good portions for the money, but it tasted way better than I expected. Here's where I feel really bad. I asked Nate if he'd come to pick it up with me, thinking to myself that I still didn't want to lift anything, and I didn't even consider that he would be missing the Rippin Run event that Nick ran. Aarrrgh, guilt. Good pizza, more shred.
How amazing is it to think that three active shredders got so many people to drive, bus, and fly out for one weekend? Amazing. You know what else is amazing? The fact that footbag players can play other sports! I know, it's hard to believe, but I saw it with my own eyes. 5 on 5 basketball was so fun to watch, I hope a little makes it's way onto the video that Fletch is going to make.
Thank you to Steve Goldberg for letting us borrow his camera for the whole weekend plus however long it takes to capture it onto Fletch's computer. Thank you to Dat for making that happen, because I wouldn't have even thought to ask him for it. Thanks to the other guys who were in the car when Dat went to pick it up, because I know you used some of your SC time for that side trip.
Everyone who was still at the site at 5pm there was helpful with cleaning up. Thank you to Chris E. who took a bunch of stuff back to my house for me so I could continue wrapping up at the event. I went back to Jeremy's with a bunch of people. After Jeremy closed up and finished things with the principal of the school, he came home and eventually everyone decided to go out for Thai food. After that everyone was going bowling. I was in the group who did neither. I was in the KFC, beer, and ice cream group. I didn't really want to eat Thai food, and I couldn't really bowl. So it made sense for me to be in the split off group, though I kind of felt like I was ditching the others. Going bowling really isn't that fun if you can't play and you've lost your driver's license so you can't even sit in the bar and socialize. I don't even remember what else went on. I know that I was tired. At some point, little Cameron came in with my glowsticks and we went outside to crack them and spin them on shoe strings. Then we went to Jeremy's room to continue. It had been a while since I played with glowsticks, it was fun. Eventually Jeremy, Sunny, and Fletch wandered in and Sunny took a turn. I don't know if this was before or after my nap. At some point, I crashed hard on Jeremy's bed and woke up to a lot of people standing around me singing Happy Birthday. I felt kind of silly since I felt so groggy and was the center of attention, but it was so nice at the same time. Sunny said that she thought the weekend shouldn't end without that happening.
Monday:
Wake up to watch people shred. Nothing better except being able to shred too. Luckily, I got to watch Jim, Lon, Nick, Daryl, and Fletch in a circle. Ben was kicking too.
The 2nd "whoops" that I can remember was spilling a full cup of hot tea that Daryl brought for Sunny as a surprise before she had even gotten to taste it. There was 1/5 left in the bottom by the time I picked it up again. She says it tasted good.
We got to meet a neighbor of Jeremy's who thought that living near Jeremy was like living near a resort.
After the Idaho van left with Lon in it, Fletch, Mike, Nick and I went to rent Oldboy and get some food. We went back to Jeremy's place, made our food, and watched the movie. Jeremy got back from work half way through the movie. When we all left, Jeremy thought we were leaving him alone, but really there was a special friend there to keep him company. I wonder if he's alone yet.
Random Stuff
Ken said that his #1 complaint was the weather. I wonder what #2 and 3 were.
I'm a little sad to change my avatar and signature, but they can live on in this post.
Thank you to everyone who came out to make this the most memorable event I've ever co-hosted.my signature wrote:P.S. You're invited to Santa Cruz!
A special personal thank you to the people who surprised me with birthday presents. I got a few new footbag shirts, some tea, a balloon, and some amazing memories. Score!
I tried to make this event stand out, and I'm pretty sure Jeremy and Fletch feel that same way. It pretty clear in our choice of t-shirt designs. I thought having several people send in music requests would be great. A playlist created by all of the people who would be kicking to it. Unfortunately, not a single person sent a single song or title to Fletcher. Luckily, he picked music that everyone seemed to like. We also had the "host hotel" be a campground, something that's not the norm. That idea clearly didn't take off because almost everyone who was there for both days stayed at Jeremy's. I had tons of extra towels (which won't happen again if there is a next time) in case people needed them, but very few people did, so that's fine.
Also, we made a huge effort to get local kickers out. You figure, "It's Santa Cruz, there have to be a ton of circle kickers here." And there are. We saw a bunch of local kickers who are interested in progressing in Freestyle, and a handful of people who just came to hang out and get some full hacks. Fletch and I drove around the UCSC campus and staple hammered flyers for the event up, and I put them up at my school as well as joined circle kicks specifically to promote the event and give them all info on the event. Jeremy handed out them out to some local kickers in Capitola, Dat made a listing on Craigs List, Fletch made a listing on another site, and I e-mailed all of the local radio stations and community calenders with a public service announcement (PSA). I was happy to hear Jeremy's parents say that they had seen something about our event on TV. Yes, good job us.
Gray got the event CD's because some foolish person threw them away. But if anyone got them, I'm glad it's him. Yay for first events.
Did everyone who preordered a shirt get one?
I used ALL of my 1000 daytime minutes - and went over by 210 minutes, totalling $82 in burnage. Luckily, I've been with T-Mobile for years now, so I called and asked them to help me in any way they could, and the woman did research and was willing to take about $40 off of the overage charges.
At CSS after people left and I kept thinking I saw them in the distance on the street, not happening here. It's kind of sad but slightly easier of a come down.
Felt more like a big jam than a tourny.
I'd like any constructive criticism you can give via PM or e-mail so I know what to improve/change the next time I'm co-hosting an event.
Cordell is Walker Texas Ranger's first name. I know because I saw TWO episodes yesterday. Yes, it was a sweet day.

I played footbag by myself a little yesterday and it felt okay. I feel much better today than I did early in the day yesterday. Between last night and tonight I spent a lot of time in bed and I rested up right.

Thanks Nic. With our powers combined, Jeremy, Fletch and I put on a good event (in my opinion, obviously). I would never want to organize an event by myself.
P.S. I don't actually expect anyone to read that whole thing.
Edit: I'm pretty spent from the last few weeks, so I'm not really into PM's, e-mails, or phone calls (except for stuff like T-shirts and moderating stuff, etc.). I'm not saying don't message me, but I am saying please be patient with waiting for replies.

Hey Emily. Big thank you and props on running such a good event. I've been playing for 9 years, so I've been to quite a few, but this was really one of the best ever. I got to sleep in a bed every night, shower everyday, and eat at least one good meal per day. That's a really rare trifecta for a tourney. Competition ran on time, there was really good music, great venue, and fun non-footbag activities were also held. You, Fletch and Jeremy all should take a bow.
Yeah, we're both asian, but he has a shaved head and I don't! Come on!
Oh, and sorry I couldn't enter the Pajammy Jam, I was also disappointed I had nothing. I like the new av though, I look forward to more event photos coming out. And thank you for the tourney write-up, it's helping me with my blog a bit too.
Thanks again!
As you probably surmised, my comment was meant to illustrate that I essentially had no complaints. But I guess if I had to make another complaint, it would be: being called Dat at least 3 times by different people over the weekend.Moxie wrote:[

Ken said that his #1 complaint was the weather. I wonder what #2 and 3 were..
