Hey Tom,
Some parts of the world may be against your view in making a change, but my support is still with you in all of this. Good luck in everything, and I hope you enjoy yourself at the Montreal Jam.

Hey all,
Stuffs been sweet overall.
I am still working at the same restaurant, I am doing prep basically full time now. I work at 8 AM 5 days a week and each shift is like.. minimum 8 hours. The problem with this is that it tires me right out and that makes playing at a top level difficult.
Though Ive decided that I want to push myself as hard as I can. I feel chubby and shitty lately and I want to get fucking ripped and insane at footbag. Chris Dean and I made a pact last weekend that we would try as hard as we can starting now.
Montreal was awesome!! We got there on Saturday and said hi to everyone and got right to playing. It was a real fun and positive environment. A significant number of the shredders that showed up participated in the competitions.
The competition format itself was something totally unlike any other format we have, the main difference was that it felt ALOT like we were just shredding together, though I couldn't help but be conscious of the fact that there were three judges, two cameras and a crowd of people watching every move. It was easily the best format as far as determining who is the best shredder overall (isn't that supposed to be the goal of any competition?) as each player had many chances with the bag to show what they had and how consistent they could be.
At different times people fed off eachother in different ways. As often happens in circles, seeing other people go for, or hit, things that you have in your range you get inspired to try those tricks or other similar ones. At one point I footed blurry whirl x 2 and Ianek threw out alpine blurry whirl right after! I felt kinda like it was a slap in the face, but at the same time I realised what had happened that I had reminded him about blurry whirl things and he went for that. Also, I was aware that this was supposed to be a competition, a feeling I don't normally have in a circle with people. I really really like that shred circles are good hearted and everyone is on their own agenda, I am not that competitive of a guy and so footbag fits me so well.
I preferred to think of the competition from a slightly different perspective and I regarded each round as a chance for me to out-perform my earlier attempts, to show the full range of what I could do and to really make the best of each shot I had with the bag. One rule was that you had to pass if you flub your first trick, meaning that consistency meant ALOT! It kinda sucked having to pass after having so many aspirations for what you wanted to do that time with the bag,
On the flipside (puns are sweet) sometimes the bag came around so fast that you were both dead tired AND almost out of ideas of things to go for to impress everyone and move onto the next round.
Each group of 3 or 4 shredders went up and did 3 5 minute sessions where you play till you drop without bailing and then pass. I found that the general feeling I got was that the first and second round often felt pretty similar, making the third one feel real important.
I think that the system could be improved if each group only did two rounds of 5 minutes. That way the first round would be an introduction of sorts and a chance for players to test the waters. The second round they could pull all the punches and really giver to go for the victory. I think that would be more exciting and easier to watch. It dragged on a liiiiiiiiiittle. I am not emphasizing that at all though, there was just alot of players to get through even going at a good organized pace.
Eli did a really good job on the mic and gave the whole thing an aire of professionalism. He's also a really nice guy and I was glad to get another chance to hang out with him and shred with him and all that.
I kinda invented one or two tricks too!
The first one was more of a joke than anything else.. well I guess the second is too, but I will get to that.
The first one is (jokingly) named Quantum Leap. It is quantum flying toe stall.
Eli told me that he maaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy have invented it years ago but he couldn't remember.
The other is a trick that I can't possibly imagine no barefoot hippy in BC has hit. It is so obvious and simple and dexless that I refuse to believe it has never been hit before, all I am saying is that I don't think that the trick has a name or is given any recognition anywhere in the footbag literature I have seen this far in my life.
It is an extension of Johnny Suderman's new invention "Suderman's Tail" where the player does a pendulum and at the same time falls down to a push-up position and the bag swings all the way around on the foot and the foot and bag stop, still on the toe, with the toe pointing forwards. (Most long-winded description ever?? It rivals the BS on footbag.com!)
My trick (VERY JOKINGLY) named Mosher's Tail starts with the same pendulum motion but then you swing up into a *handstand* with the bag still on your foot, hold for a sec, then swing back down with the bag. I have it on video where I hit it in street clothes, but I won't post that since Eli filmed me actually hitting it well, much better than the version I have in fact.
It took SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many tries!!! I got it like 4 times now though! My goal is to be able to swing up into it and walk around on my hands in Mosher's Tail and then swing back down into a string or symp whirl or something! hahah
WORLDS IS IN FIVE WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been drilling alot, I want to be SO good by then!! I want to be completely genuine and hitting really tight links the whole time.
Every time I play I feel stronger and more consistent, especially with the concepts Ive been drilling lately.
I have been practicing a routine! I plan on competing in open this year, kinda scary!
I did a great run-through of my routine yesterday, only 3 small drops and it ended with BSOS blurry whirl and blurriest to hand catch!
I have finally started drilling PS whirls! I drilled other symp whirl stuff alot, especially symp toe whirls and I finally feel like the motion is strong enough for me to do several of them working ps whirls without hurting my knees. I always felt wonky after trying a few of them so I stayed away.
Today I worked blenders and I feel like I had a breakthrough finally!!!!!!!
At one point I did blender>hand>other blender>hand rpt for like.. SO long! I even hit pdx blender both sides!
Here are some things Ive hit in the past little bit that I can remember:
- torque>spin bs
- dyno>spin bs
- ps whirl>s whirl os
- symp toe whirl>s whirl os
- far symple leg>symp toe whirl bs
- ps whirl BSOS lots of times
- blender BSOS lots of times
- pdx whirl>symp whirl BSOS in montreal comp
- 7 alternating flying toe stalls in mont comp
- pixie paradon, blurriest, blurry whirl lots of times in mont comp
AND OH SHIT I JUST REMEMBERED!!!!
Today shredding Peng asked me to hit rubberman and first try I hit it TIMES TWO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AS IF!!!!
I was feeling SO strong today!! I want to keep playing everyday and eating really well.
And I want Duncan to call me back about the shoe proposal so that I can get started and make it for us all to enjoy.
I LOVE FOOTBAG!!!!
I need to go shower, I hope this long post satisfies the people that have missed my blog lately. I have missed it too.

The craziest example of nice honest Canadians just happened to me.
I just took over a load of laundry as I was way overdue, I hadn't done laundry in 3 or 4 weeks. When I got there I found the oddest thing... a load of my own laundry that I had forgotten in the drier!! So for 4 weeks totally random people that don't know me at all have just been doing their laundry working around my pile of clean clothes sitting on top of the drier!
What luck! No asshole took my teeny tiny heart covered briefs!!
Considering I didn't notice that a whole pile of my clothes and stuff were missing I really can't say what things from that pile, which I had already forgotten, may have been missing. Perhaps someone made off with my fancy a-zipper-from-front-to-back-through-your-crotch thermal undies.
Some of the clothes seem to have rustmarks on them. I guess that was from the drier as the just sat there wet on the metal.
Anywho, just thought I'd share.

Man Tom, it's so great to hear that you're so energized and spirited lately! The Montreal Jam really did a lot of good for you! Quantum Leap and Mosher's Tail are awesome uniques imho. I just spoke with BenRea and he showed me your Mosher's Tail, and I just couldn't stop laughing for at least half an hour! You're really advancing in footbag a lot.

Nice list! Hitting flying toe stalls, blurriest, and blurry whirl during comp is a great feat! And the pdx whirl>symp whirl is sure to be a good workout for ps whirls. I guess the circle competition layout was much more relaxed than usual comps with routines. It really pushes the integrity of players to show their shred in real time. Also, Rubberman!? Seriously, I love seeing your enthusiasm. I hope you guys can go to East Coast.mosher wrote:- ps whirl BSOS lots of times

I am pretty devistated right now... there is already a footbag shoe on it's way to market....
I feel so deflated right now. Ive been working so hard for years, pushing through all the barriers that tried to hold me back.. only to have this brutal kick in the balls today.
I absolutely refuse to give up however.
I know I am the best engineer in the world and I also know that no one has half the passion for shoe design that I have (in the footbag world that is) and that the new footbag shoe is going to be a piece of shit.
I must (MUST!!!!) now create something far better than the thing coming out (it's called Quantum I hear) and completely blow it out of the water.
I feel slightly disenchanted, but no less determined than ever.
I am hurt.. really hurt.. but I refuse to be a pussy that gives up. I just have to make THE ULTIMATE shoe, not that that wasn't my goal all along, but now I have some competitor with which to compare.
This is life, this is what happens, I won't let it get to me and I will sure as fuck not give up.
Enough of that!
Lots of other stuff is going on in my life.
Here's something Ive wanted to write in here for a long time......
I AM GOING TO WORLD'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BOOOO YAAAAAA!!!!
So a few weeks ago Joe Kulacz posted that he was selling his digital video camera. I jumped at the opportunity and offered him a price and he accepted.
Every day I let myself get all excited and hopefull that the camera will finally come... geez. I REALLY hope I didn't get scammed.
Speaking of scams, Jim Jansen (who used to post here alot) scammed me for $50 USD. He posted that he was selling a bunch of shred videos and a bag and I eagerly accepted and mailed him the money. I havn't heard from him since.
I feel helpless sometimes, like.. I am so keen to help and support people, even with the understanding that they may fuck me over... and then lately so often they just barf out a pile of bad karma and rip me off.
Oh well, they will have shitty unfulfilled lives of bad deeds (which are ultimately paid back with bad luck and bad acne and bad cooking etc.) and I will continue happily smiling and bouncing through life, with fortune surrounding me and my good karma.
The past year or two I have been really concerned with having good karma and being a good person. I don't litter, I do my best not to lie, I pick up other peoples trash in some situations, I do my best to be polite and good to be around. .. I AM HONEST!! I think this plays a big role in the whole 'being a good person' thing. I don't really believe in spiritual things nor any real traditional aspects of karma, i only use 'karma' as it most closely describes how I feel like I interact with the world.
If you are a good person, good things will happen to you.
When people ask "why do bad things happen to good people?" they are being ignorant of the fact that the 'good' person likely was awful in secret or in their mind or something, because I really really really think that if you are good, only good will come to you. And being good is more than just in ones actions, though of course actions count for alot, you have to really mean it, and do your best to be nice and good all the time, even if that means being nice to someone that has just been mean to you. It's your way of proving you are above them and you are not so weak and pathetic that you need to resort to trying to hurt others.
whoaaaa tom, you sure are deep.
Oh yeah, so the moral of the story is to not lose faith in your convictions and to just keep plowing through any adversity. er something.
Life!

Whoa Tom -- I feel like I just burned off 10 calories just from reading your post. Hah. You sure can make energetic E-mails.
This is a thrilling time for footbag, no doubt about it. I feel the sport is really on the brink of something. Your efforts will NOT go unrewarded.
Cheers mate. Hopefully we can be roomies...err..classmates

Here's something hilarious!
So I am taking a course this summer, rather I am going to be taking a course as of July 4th, and I had the BEST idea ever!!!!
So I am going to be taking a course via correspondance, which means that I don't have any classes to attend, I just hand things in, meaning I can take it from anywhere.
Here's where it starts to get funny, there are two courses offered for correspondance, one of them is German...
My plan is to take German via correspondance while I am in Germany.
Man I am smart!

tom,
so sorry to hear about the shoe project!!! i know you put alot of time, effort and, even more importantly, love into that project!!!!
never fear though, i believe that you can design the ultimate footbag shoe! honestly, you have heaps of passion for the sport and, although i don't know who is collaborating on the other 'quantum' shoe, i sincerely doubt they and what ever brand is manufacturing said shoe has as much excietment or interest in the project as you do.
don't let this unfortunate set back stop you from accomplishing what you set out to do, designing the shoe that every shredder hopes and dreams for. A shoe made by us for made for us.
i believe in you.
(p.s. you're a clever chap doing german correspondance while in germany! trade one of the german chaps footbags in exchange for doing your homework for you!)

hey tom!
dont let the quantum get u down. cause its merely a better copy of the laver produced by planetfootbag. but YOU are designing a completely NEW SHOE, which is a huge difference! so take the quantum as it is,a slight improvement to the laver and a step towards independence from adidas for the footbag-world - a surely good project.
its not gonna be the revoultionary shoe that u can still bring out and we're all waiting for!
btw. i'd be willing to do ur german homework in trade for a nice little mosh-bag.

dont let the quantum get u down. cause its merely a better copy of the laver produced by planetfootbag. but YOU are designing a completely NEW SHOE, which is a huge difference! so take the quantum as it is,a slight improvement to the laver and a step towards independence from adidas for the footbag-world - a surely good project.
its not gonna be the revoultionary shoe that u can still bring out and we're all waiting for!
btw. i'd be willing to do ur german homework in trade for a nice little mosh-bag.
looking forward to seeing u soon, old friend. cheers from berlin.
