Two years and still working clippers....

I know what you mean about feeling like you suck compared to so many others, but you gotta remember that a lot of the footage you see here and read about here are from some of the best players IN THE WORLD! Of course there are going to be those that progress faster than you. At the same there will be those worse than you.

As far as two years and still working clippers...
Ive been freestyling for about 6 years and IM STILL working clippers. Dont feel so bad. The best in world are the ones that schooled, schooled and still DO school the basics. Remember that.

You've been freestyling for 6 years, TJ? Well, that makes me feel better. I'd imagine you progressed pretty similar to me then (I could be horribly, horribly wrong though).

The session started as has been the usual lately: ushered in by a proverbial wave of crap. Clipper work was a pain, but after a half hour it started getting better. My average same side flip consecutives has risen from an average of 5 over the last 2 days to about 8. Yeah, it still sucks compared to a week ago (what happened?), but it's improvement (after massive regression).

Lots of clipper work was proceeded by pixie work and two good things: 31 contacts of mirage > legover > repeat, 21 consecutive strongside IO ATWs, 12 consecutive flipside IO ATWs (I was never good at those in the past). I fiddled a bit with actually doing pixie sets near the end and found that now both sides can actually let off a decent set, though there's lot of room for improvement for sure; neither set is very comfortable and barely gives enough time for a mirage if I'm lucky.

By the way, the rationale for the IO ATWs is to get the motion more naturally, because I see a pixie set as just setting the bag and doing an ATW motion quickly on the upswing. Seems to be accurate based on the current results.

On a different note, I would recommend listening to Lucky Boys Confusion (my favorite band), Pomeroy, and Swizzle Tree. They're all really good and comprise a good deal of my shred music. You can hear some of their stuff on their myspace sites, which are linked in the above.

Hasta whenever.

No footbag today (Friday), for several reasons. First and foremost, I am hoping a day off will get me back on the not-sucking train. I usually take one day off a week anyways, so it might as well not be on the weekend, when I have no excuse not to play for a long, long time.

I think it's weird how emotions, feelings, and memories can be so tied to other senses. When I hear the album Commitment by Lucky Boys Confusion it draws me back to this last winter when I played footbag at the racquetball courts, hating that damn service a little more each day. Still, for some reason the memories have a twinge of comfortable nostalgia in them.

How SandWraith Got His Groove Back

Post by SandWraith »

Played surprisingly well. Perhaps the slump has reached it's end? I wasn't rocking the bag or anything like that, but it was a noticeable improvement: I was controlling the direction and loft of the bag, instead of struggling futilely against it. Managed 10+ ss each side many times. Did 27 contacts of mirage > legover > rpt, a bit of whirling, and some pixie stuff. Not too much to say for highlights-- it was 2.5 hours of drilling.

Another good session, with lots of 10+ ss clippers and spinning mirage BS thrown in easily (considering I haven't done spinning in a week, that's a nice touch). The sad part is, about halfway through the session, I landed a bubba strangely. Upon impact, I felt a dull twinge in my left knee, and not the usual "footbag is killing my knees" feeling-- it was more pronounced and further up and to the left than the normal patella pain. I continued sessioning until, upon doing my mirage > legover > rpt drill I felt it again. I realized that it wasn't gonna go away: I either tweaked my patella or (and this is what I fear) my meniscus. I don't feel it unless I'm walking up stairs. I quit my session at that point, though it had only been 1.5 hours and I felt like continuing. I'm gonna take tomorrow off and possibly longer if need be. I don't want to cause further damage. Easy come, easy go I guess. :(

Dear Blog,
I'm sorry no one reads you. I'm sorry you're long, drawn out, and generally boring. Most of all, I'm sorry that there may be no reason for us to see each other any longer... or at least for a while. Please, don't cry. It's not your fault-- it's mine. You see, I loved the time we spent together: I feel like you know me so well and I really know you, but there are things beyond our control here. I just am not strong enough (my knees, I mean) to keep this up with you. I have to take some time off, think things over, and see if this can really work between us.

I hope we can see each other again soon. I miss you already.

Love,
Zach

Just so you know, I've been reading. Just didn't post much. I never know what to say in these things.

I hope you have a speedy recovery and can resume your relationship! Sometimes taking a break can be a really good thing for your game.

Thanks Tony. :) It's nice to hear someone reads this... I'm not sure what happened to TJ but I can only assume he's moved onto bigger and better things.

My knee didn't hurt at all today at work so I went and ran 3 miles on it, which kinda felt uncomfortable for the first 20 steps but then felt fine. After I ran, I lifted. I lifted Monday, Wednesday, and today. I don't know if I'm necessarily gonna get bulging muscles that'll draw the ladies, but it's a good way to do something physical instead of bemoaning my lower body's impairment (take that as you will...).

EDIT: The running has made my legs sore, and I can feel the exact area that is tender-- it's the connection of the patella tendon to the kneecap. I remember reading that the patella is so strong that it will not tear like a ligament; if it is put under that much stress, it will instead break off at the knee cap or break the knee cap itself. I'm glad because tendons heal a lot faster than ligaments, and by exercising the nearby muscles I can facilitate this healing (blood flow brings nutrients necessary in the rebuilding process).

OK, that one was tough to read. I really hope your knee gets the point where you can play again. Right now I'm not able to play due to this wicked bad cold, but I know it's not something that could keep me away from the sport for good so it's too tough. *hugs for you*

PS I hope to meet you someday

BOO!

Here I am. sorry for not writing sooner, but I had to wait for my eyes to uncross after reading those last couple of posts. That sucks about your knee. My knees were weak for a while, but I drank a lot of milk and ate a lot of bananas, and streched. They are better now, although occasionall they pop...

Oh yeah, I really havent been here because there was some filter at my work blocking me from modified  BUT, today I could get on, so here I am. You said in a previous post, that you hoped that I was on to bigger and better things. FOOTBAG is the biggest, best thing in my life. Well, that and my GINORMOUS cock
yup, that was stupid

anyway, Im still here, so get better and start schooling again!!

That's too bad about your whirling problem. Whirls are fun. But, if you dont want to do them, don't do them. I think you should take typing lessons, you are getting sloppy

That sucks, Ben. :( I remember reading in your blog about your knee problems, but for some reason I thought they had just worked themselves out. I know what you are feeling, and it's not a good feeling at all. I'd recommend taking up weightlifting, as it's a good way to get sweaty to music and push yourself. Sure, it's not nearly as empowering and individualistic as footbag, but it's as close as I have found that doesn't put a lot of stress on the knees (biking too, I guess).

My knees felt fine today, as least for walking and jumping, but I'm still unsure about blind landings. I'm not sure how easily understood this idea is-- but I've noticed that it's not jumping up and down that makes footbag so hard on the legs, it's that we almost always land without focusing on landing. By not anticipating the landing, we can't make it as streamline, and as a result more stress is generated and more shock absorption necessary. So while I can jump up and down and feel fine, I can't say that my knee would be able to handle blind landings well. I'm gonna wait till at least saturday, and even then I might just do pixie sets with no downtime component to be safe.

Brian and I went to the YMCA today and lifted weights for about an hour. He went upstairs and used the weightlifting equipment (machines, contraptions, etc.) while I just did freeweight stuff. It was fun, but I'm sure no pro. I fixed a dumbell to begin with and, upon picking it up, the weights on one side fell off (cause I didn't remember to fasten a clamp on the end). Humility is a good thing, I guess.

After the weightlifting we played in the pool for about two hours, seeing how many headers we could be back and forth between us, then eventually evolving into a game where we would throw passes between us and try to head the ball into the lifeguards. The two lifeguards were really enjoying it and we even got these two young (5 to 8 year old??)kids to play too, which their parents were happy about. Overall, it was fun feeling like a kid and just making people happy.

I wanted to swim today since it's a good light-impact way to work the legs, and doing headers actually meant that we did a lot of blind landings. At one point my knee felt a bit tweaked, but that was for a short time and it's felt fine ever since.

Sorry this entry is long and doesn't even have an interesting oddity about it. I was gonna insert a 'g' as the second letter to every word, but since it's such a long entry, that's just too much work.
