using other people's routines

Post by hacksterbator »

At a recent event, some one used a shred 30 that was originally done by some one else. Given, it wasn't totally the same, some changes had been made, but i was just curious about what other people thought. Yeah, shred 30 is about how much you can score and i guess if you can hit a shred 30 that some one else has hit, and you can better the score, why not? but to me i think it's kinda lame. I mean, you wouldn't redo some one's 2 minute routine with the same music, so why would you redo someone's shred 30. I should also point out that credit was given to the original creator and they did not try to pass it off as their own shred 30 routine. just curious about what other people think about this.

I dont see any problem with doing it in Shred30, i mean if its a routine specifically designed to score for example, 250 points, and thats what you want and you have the skill, then why not.
I would think it a teeeny bit rude though if you were at a comp and followed a less skilled player and hit their shred30, plus more of your own on the end, it would be kind of an 'UP YOURS!!' to the lesser player.

Not that anyone would really bother doing that anyway... i dont know why i thought of it... its 430am...

yeah where do you draw the line?

i mean in theory, there would be an ultimately efficient combo that was easiest in difficulty that might attract more than one player.

nobody can claim a shred30 as their own, if someone can do it better, u better get creative or somethin :)

your talking about penske at MFJ3 right? I don't see why not say it, your not dissing anybody andy.

I don't see how any shred30 can be owned by someone. Personally, if I was competing and did my shred30, lets say, directly afterwards someone does my same shred30 but does it dropless. I would be the first person to give props.

Although I can see where your coming from on the lameness factor, why not make your own that matches your personal style. That would make more sense, plus it would be more fun. But in this case (if I'm right) if your taking vasek's shred30 and doing it in comp, fucking props!

shred 30 is about shred so it doesn't matter if somebody else does it first it just matters how hard it is. if you hit a combo that somebody else hits does that mean you're a copy cat or does it mean you just hit a hard combo? i think most people were blown away and thought that jims shred 30 was awsome, i don't think we should take away any of the difficulty because it was like somebody elses, if anything that just makes it cooler seeing that he's on the same level.

well, if someone had 30 seconds worth of signiture moves and then you just went and coppied it and used it in a comp, i think that would be bad, but otherwise, its fine, no one can tell! (well, some people)

If you copy a shred30 exactly move to move, I wouldn't give you much credit.

But if you copy parts, like Lon Smith Special drill, there's no problem of course.

The more people compete in shred 30 the hugher the chances that the exact same 30 or so moves will be hit in the same order by two different people.

I've seen countless ducking butter x2 / sidewalk > ripwalk rpt, blur > dimwalk rpt, ripwalk > crispy torque rpt ...

I think it's bound to happen one way or another.

If Jim Penske can copy a shred of Vasek 1:1 than I am sure he would be able to cut out a few tricks and score even more points.

Chances are not good that the "perfect" shred for each person is the same.

I guess it is the best to elaborate a shred which will work the best for you from first to the last trick.

With all due respect...it's just kinda lame

Wasn't Shred30 supposed to be improvisational shred?

Well.. in my opinion that shouldn't be done.. there are thousands of tricks and combos that can be done. Evert footbager should perform his/her own routines... even in 2 minutes or in shred 30.

I'm not saying that you can't say.. "well I like this trick.. I saw it on a routine and I'm going to put it into mine.." but one thing is copy a trick.. and another is copy a complete routine.. :)

To me, footbag is like art.

In art - you study people's styles (DaVinci, Michaelangelo, Nerdrum, etc.) to get better. But, in competitions you are not allowed to enter art that you have copied, because it's not original. Art is all about originality.

In footbag - you also study people's styles (you know everyone I could name here, use your imagination) to get better. But, in competitions you ARE allowed to enter "art" that is not your own. Why should this be any different than normal art? Given - there is only a certain number of things you can do with your legs around a bean bag, which gives you less originality to work with, meaning there is bound to be some routines with the same moves, but that doesn't mean you should do it on purpose.

In conclusion, I don't have a HUGE problem with people copying shred 30s, but I don't think you should copy one move for move.

Perhaps if I wasn't an artist I wouldn't care (but I guess we are all artists if you think my second paragraph is true). :D

I would wager a large sum of $$$ that everyone who says doing someone elses shred 30 is lame has NEVER done a dropless shred 30.

Preforming a planned shred 30 excatly correct is an incredibly difficult task that only the best in the world can do. I would give someone infinately more props to exactly duplicate Vaskas shred 30 than to go on stage and preform a easier, lower scoring "original" shred. My guess is if YOU tried to duplicate one of the best shred 30s in the world you would drop...ALOT!

shred30 isn't artistic. Shred30 is pure ability. If I saw someone elses shred30 and thought 'damn, that suits me so well, that was really sweet' I would have absolutely no problem copying it. And why would you get creative in shred30? It's measurement based on adds, which limits the feasible tricks severely, making shred30's very similar already. When I was dreaming an ultimate shred30 one day (:P) I had crispy torque > ripwalk > spinning butterfly rpt and since then I've seen that exact combo in a few shred30's.

I'm nowhere near as good as most people on this site (so, I guess you're right) but also, I don't have a huge problem with people copying the routines of other people because I know it's hard to come up with something original and easy enough (you know what I mean) to get a score like Vasek's.

And regarding the Shred30 not being artistic and being pure ability:

Art is pure ability, also (and practice).

routines: artistic and technical merit

shred30: cold caluclation, technical only. Links not taken into account, asthetic value not taken into account. Song choice, interaction with crowd, none of that.
