3 Day Fast

Post by bigdirtyfoot »

My friend Gabe and I are doing a 3 Day Water Fast starting Thursday morning. If you'd like to join, all you have to do is not eat from Thursday 12 AM until Sunday 12 AM. Drink plenty of water though. If you're not comfortable with a water fast, feel free to do a juice fast, which involves only drinking juices and waters. Other forms of fasting are available to you as well. I've done fasts off and on for four years and I've found that they keep me healthy and give me energy. I'm interested to know what others think about their experience. We can post our feelings before, during, and after the fast. I would advise eating raw vegetables and fruits the day before the fast and break the fast with fruits/vegetables only or you will get sick - the first time I broke a fast I ate a hamburger and it made me incredibly sick. Post any other questions you have here.

You're crazy, and that ain't healthy. I'd get sick after 5 hours of not eating... i mean im skinny but fuck man its 10:40 am and if i dont eat im gonna pass out of lack of energy... how the hell can you footbag with no food to send energy into your blood?!? Just don't end up in the hospital man. Not eating for one day alone isn't good for you, 3 is eek.

I know lots of people that do that. It's not too bad. It kinda cleans out your system, or something.

I don't recomend doing too much physical activity during that time. I don't David still kicks though.

David still kind of kicks.

And a 3 day fast is very healthy for you. You dont put anything into your body, so you completely crap out everything. You "start over".

I dont get offended, but i think Ben Rea could have offended some touchy folks with that gandhi remark.

I'm seriously considering doing this with you, David. I've gone for long periods of time without eating, but never for fastign purposes, so I think I could do this relitively easy without giving in.

I dunno, I'd probably have to stop smoking pot if I really wanted to do it. I'll think about it.

Here's a tip: You have no idea what you are talking about. Don't act like you do. If you think that not eating for a single day is unhealthy then you really don't know what you're talking about.

If you think it's unhealthy say "That doesn't sound healthy" rather than "You're crazy that's absolutely terrible for you"

That's better :)

But the body has plenty of reserves to deal with a 3 day fast, 3 days is nothing in body terms. I, as many people, have done the 40 hour famine and that only made my stomach hurt, which can happen between lunch and dinner.

BTW: That's a cool idea David. I'm not gonna do it because I love my food too much ;)

Hey I don't have a problem with anyone's remarks... trust me, I've heard a lot of crazy remarks in PERSON over the past 4 years, and that's from good friends who say they care about me. I missed the Ghandi remark, but I actually share Ghandi's birthday, Oct. 2nd.

Fasting is good for you because the human body wasn't MADE to eat 3 meals a day, 7 days a week. Observe other animals; when they get sick, sometimes they will fast and they will get healthy. When you don't eat for 24 straight hours, the enzymes in your stomach stop breaking down food and are used to cleanse the colon and other parts of your digestive system. If you've never fasted for more than 24 hours, then you haven't ever had a clean body. People who recommend fasting, usually say a 3-5 day fast once a month is optimal, but I can only do maybe 4 fasts per year because of the activities that I do (working, school, physical activity, etc.). It really does drain a lot of energy.

Personally, I find that fasting takes a lot of self discipline. The hardest part is that you are hungry, but it's not the hunger that bothers most people - it's going without TASTE for days. Our society is so addicted to eating that it's a natural reaction, but I'm trying to train my body to eat less. It's highly possible that most people on modified have expanded stomachs, which is very bad for you. After fasting a few times, your stomach will settle back down to a more normal size and you will not have to eat as much to get full. I've noticed that fasting also cuts down on my monthly food bill, simply because I eat less. As a result, I feel lighter and I have more energy. I also have a horrible case of heartburn, and after fasting, it usually goes away for a few weeks. That's one of the main reasons I fast. A lot of people fast for spiritual reasons. I'm not really into that right now but I'd be willing to look into it in the future.

Guys, please do some research before you are too quick to judge my actions. Once again, I welcome those of you who wish to join me, to post your daily experiences during the fast (or whatever you want to post - this is sort of experimental) and those of you who don't want to join, that's fine as well! Fasting's not for everybody, even though are bodies were designed to do it. I wish all of you well.

Oh, and I still kick, but I will not be doing too much physical or mental activity during the fast - you risk fainting, to be honest. It drains you of energy.

I get a headache if i go too many hours without eating.
It just seems a bit strange to me to fast, there are so many people who have to go hungry but not by choice.
As for fasting for spirtual reasons, i guess i can understand that. Just look at how many people go through ridiculous hazing rituals just to join a team or a frat.
It does seem to make sense that humans werent designed to eat 3 huge meals a day, i heard it was best to just eat a little whenever you were hungry. Not at specific meal times.

I fast for about 3 days twice a year. it is actually a very healthy thing to do despite what it seems. copied some info from a website.

Detoxification is the foremost argument presented by advocates of fasting.

A second prescribed benefit of fasting is the healing process that begins in the body during a fast. During a fast energy is diverted away from the digestive system due to its lack of use and towards the metabolism and immune system. The healing process during a fast is precipitated by the body's search for energy sources. Abnormal growths within the body, tumors and the like, do not have the full support of the body's supplies and therefore are more susceptible to autolysis (the breaking down of fat). Furthermore, "production of protein for replacement of damaged cells (protein synthesis) occurs more efficiently because fewer 'mistakes' are made by the DNA/RNA genetic controls which govern this process." A higher efficiency in protein synthesis results in healthier cells, tissues and organs. This is one reason that animals stop eating when they are wounded, and why humans lose hunger during influenza. Hunger has been proven absent in illnesses such as gastritis, tonsillitis and colds. Therefore, when one is fasting, the person is consciously diverting energy from the digestive system to the immune system.

Finally, the most scientifically proven advantage to fasting is the feeling of rejuvenation and extended life expectancy. A slower metabolic rate, more efficient protein production, an improved immune system, and the increased production of hormones contributes to this long-term benefit of fasting. In addition to the Human Growth Hormone that is released more frequently during a fast, an anti-aging hormone is also produced more efficiently. "The only reliable way to extend the lifespan of a mammal is under-nutrition without malnutrition." A study was performed on earthworms that demonstrated the extension of life due to fasting. The experiment was performed in the 1930s by isolating one worm and putting it on a cycle of fasting and feeding. The isolated worm outlasted its relatives by 19 generations, while still maintaining its youthful physiological traits. The worm was able to survive on its own tissue for months. Once the size of the worm began to decrease, the scientists would resume feeding it at which point it showed great vigor and energy. "The life-span extension of these worms was the equivalent of keeping a man alive for 600 to 700 years."
