Tried it. It becomes hard, then brittle, then breaks.
Thats what it did for me at least, after that I decided that it wouldnt work well.

Well, I'll try quadra-knot, but I think I may seal it with some elmers, just to be sure.

Note: If anyone else tries the elmer's thing, make sure you do it on all the knots at the end because it can get messy as you're stitching the other pents. You want to try and get a tiny bit of glue only on the knot, not on the fabric because it really stiffens up and will ruin the fabric. I think microwave helps the glue dry within seconds after you've secured all the knots.

You think? Have you tried it?
I'd think it would weaken or stiffen the facile. Or something.

Nah, I haven't tried it yet because I still have bags that need to be stitched. I can't go into full-on bag experiementing mode, or switch techniques until I'm finished with paid orders.

If I can get a chance, I'll try it with one of my reject pents I have lyin around.

I use Rib-stitch cord wich is a crazy strong kind of synthetic thread. It's super fine and it doesn't fray, so it's great to work with; but if you double it over itself it comes very close to the same strength as floss. This stuff is used to stitch the canvas together on older airplanes, so it's woven STRONG.

I melt instead of knotting. I've never had it become brittle or brake or anything like that... IMO there's no other way to go then melting!

I have used a large amount of footbags including - carol, lonn, hermey, patris, mirkin, abshire, wilson, toby suggate and I have absolutely no idea which if any of those bags were floss and which weren't. I use apolstory thread because I prefer the idea of using something made for sewing than using something used for cleaning your teeth but ultimately I don't think it really makes any difference at all.
mosher wrote:Chris, you're still doing the same thing. You're both making yourself look uneducated and uninformed AND you are doing a really good job of trying to say in a thousand different ways that what I am doing sucks.

SHUT UP ALREADY!!!
Chris, each post you make in this thread just makes it clearer and clearer you don't really truely understand what you are talking about.
Tom I really think you should consider what kind of a person posting like this makes you look to people who haven't met you. Also I don't understand why you have to make this a personal debate instead of a debate about which is better out of floss or thread. I can only guess that you actually do feel threatened by this topic? I would be very surprised if this had an postive or negative impact on the sale of floss or thread made footbags.

Jeremy, if you read the first few posts by chris when he is describing the situation and the various merrits he continually brings up my name as a user of floss for no reason, then he moved on to very carefully trying to denounce those choices.

I am not afraid of any loss of sales, I have far too many orders to keep up with at all times anyways, I just didn't see why he had to bad mouth my methods over and over for no reason.

Anyways, I am not upset or anything. :)

Eh, I just think floss makes for poor bag performance. If you look at it from a strictly scientific standpoint, like you tend to do Mosher, it makes sense. But hey, this thread isn't going to change anyone's mind who isn't willing to listen. I just thought I'd put the info out there.

Let's not get into filler discussion...lol

Haha, okay but YOU start the new topic this time, and I'll jump in.

Oh hey, I just thought of something. I want to do a test. I'm going to stitch 3 bags. One with floss, one with Cotton/Poly thread, and one with Nylon thread. I'll keep posting data about these bags, but I need to know what kind of floss you guys use. I know there's a ton of different kind, but just tell me which one to get and I'll use that.

Also, breifly I wanted to mention that of course different type of floss behave differently. I got a bag one time that had that green really stiff floss. I guess it was unwaxed or something. That was HORRIBLE. The bag never broke in. It was like a freakin hackysack lol. Lately I've been seeing some with that glide type floss. Anyway, let me know what to use and I'll go to it.

Peng and I use the no-name type waxed floss from the drug store.

And the problem with how you viewed things from a scientific viewpoint was that you really don't understand what you are talking about, that much became clear as soon as you tried to get all sciency on us.

I am all for using thought and logic to make sense of why certain changes make different outcomes, but you need to understand the matter at hand more in order to make the correct deductions.

Well, I had a long drawn out come-back response, but I just don't feel like doing that in this thread.

I'm gonna keep posting about my stitching philosophies, and hopefully some people will catch on. If you want to contribute, fine. But do me a favor and keep your insults to yourself mosher.

Incorrect. It's gather, in conjunction with materials used.
This has pricked at me for a few days now, and really does prove most of the outlandish comments and views you've been proposing in this topic Chris. Every experienced stitcher can tell you that needle placement is the most important thing when going around the pent and hex, and it's also a given that the amount of depth in which you stitch a bag also denotes how puffy a bag will seem. Gather does play a factor, but the depth in which you do your running stitch along the edge of the template has more of an influence. I feel that your poor insight on this simple fact needs some further thought.

And I'm out (again  ).

How can you expect your first bag made of floss and nylon thread be an accuracte description of how bags made with these play?

the best floss ive come across so far is oral-b mint waxed floss. it came in a round box.. like those gum despensors.. bubbletape...

anyways, i also have used like 4 other flosses, and didnt like those bags... the floss was stiff... oral b is like thread, but flat, and uber flexible.

I've used both floss and upholstery thread, I find that upholstery thread better maintains the integrity of the footbag's shape than floss does. But the template and fabric also play a very large role in how a footbag keeps shape. I've played w/ Mosher and Peng bags, and they do pancake a little bit more than bags made w/ upholstery thread, but I think they take that into account with the size and fill of their bags. Personally, I really like the way Abshire's bags flatten on the foot and spring back to a sphere in the air - I've used his bags as a model of what my ideal of a footbag is since I first started stitching

when it comes to thread, its what you want in a footbag that counts

This whole Floss vs. Other thread thing I believe is a fairly mute point. Amoung the rest of my collection of footbags I own a Miller bag, a Mosher and a Peng bag. It is VERY debatable whether Miller's bag (using "button thread") is any better then Peng's or Mosher's bags (that are made with floss). In fact the one I shred with the most is my Peng bag, since I preffer the bag smaller and heavier... that's purely personal prefference, but the point I'm trying to make is that the difference between floss and other thread is ALOT less signifigant than suggested.

Needle placement, gather, filler, material and even the needle being used all make a MUCH bigger difference. Whatever you can use most effectively is the best thread for you to use... they're all good

Get 3 stitchers, one who uses floss, one who uses nylon, and who uses poly/cotton. Have them all stitch 3 bags, using the 3 different threads/floss, using their own technique for the thread/floss they usually use.
Make them all use the same color facile and color pattern, have them all use the same filler, and have them all be the same size.
