Offensive Vocabulary
Offensive Vocabulary
IMHO
Only words that are group/racially degrading are offensive.
eg. Nigger/Cunt/Faggot
It amazes me how people can be offended by 'shit' which is a completely inoffensive word but not be offended by Fag.
Do you agree: Only words that are group/racially degrading are offensive?

I usually find context and intent defines if a word is offensive or not. For example I'm not offended when my twin brother calls me a stupid asian but I would be offended if my boss at work did. Neither of those words "stupid" and "Asian" are offensive words to me but in a particular context they can be offensive.

... You can't define offensive. It's all personal opinion and basically how people take it. How it's delivered...
Faggot to me, is not offensive at all. Hippie... that pisses me off. (The hippie image that is forced apon me for playing footbag.) Most swears like shit and fuck, ok with me... uhhh... weekend warrior kinda ticks me off because it's not as simple as they make it out to be, uhhh... It's all personal preference I guess. I can call someone gay, and be called gay, and there usually isn't a problem because we're joking. However a few weeks ago I let a really bad one slip.. .I accidentally called Josh Rose (Vindicator sp?, lol.) a jew over AIM... that was bad adn I wasn't thinking. I use the word nigger, nagger, niglet alot, but I'm not racist. To me, it's all in good fun. I call people crackers, I get called crying indian (You'd have to see teh commercial from teh 70s) because of my heredity.... I'm just a guy that doesn't get offended or see things that I do as offending... I'm sorry?
Peace,
Fred.

Is that not against the rules? Or did one of the controversial topics over turn that while I was gone...BainbridgeShred wrote:Jay Marioti is a [Mod edit -Moxie]I was going to say something about Ozzie Guillen's "fag" comment, or something about never having heard the term "stupid asian."............but it got boring.
I don't find it offensive.. as stated above... But when Dan Feary says it... well then it's offensive, because Dan Feary is a *****.
Peace,
Fred.

Nothing is offensive unless you take it that way. Just like no one can "make" you sad, no one can "make" you offended.
I'm 17 now. Around the age of 14 and 15, I was one of the shortest kids in my school, and I was made fun of all the time - even casually by my friends. I began to wonder why in the world my "friends" would insult me like that. And then it hit me. I acted like it didn't matter to me, even though it "hurt my feelings." And then, I realized that those silly little words don't do anything to me, and that there's no reason why my friends shouldn't be able to tease me. After all, I was really short.
And so now I laugh when I see topics like this. Although discussing is great, no matter how you change your vocabulary, you can't avoid "offending" people, because some people just plain choose to be offended.

Stupid would be hurtful
Asian [in the derogatory sense] would be offensive....
see?

Since many nations are represented here at modified, I was wondering what kind of speech is banned for you, even here on modified.
I heard Canada and , maybe the Netherlands have stuff like that, but the details are sketchy.
More specifically, what kind of offensive talk will get you fined and/or jailed in your home country?
You don't have to make the comments that would get you in trouble, just say something like:
"If I made a derisive comment about "X", then I would have to pay $500 to the NAMBLA Elementary Education Fund. "
