I am SO happy that Italy won. Although I wish it hadn't ended on penalty kicks. In my opinion Zidane's first goal was certainly a dive, but that's part of the game I suppose. The header goal for Italy was amazing. And I definitely don't think that Italy's offsides call was fair, that should have been a goal. Then the rest of the match was tense although not really action-packed - although one of Buffon's saves was awesome. Overtime was ridiculous - Zidane's headbutt was ridiculous, although who knows what the Italian player said to him. I don't know. At any rate I've been pulling for Italy the whole tournament and so I am certainly glad that they won this game.

Fratelli d'Italia!

Although it's certainly said that Zidane's last game had to end like this...

Okay, what the fuck.

Put yourself in his place. You've dislocated your shoulder, you've been double teamed for the specific reason of TAKING YOU OUT, and some asshole starts talking smack to boot. Yeah, I don't know about you guys, but
I'd let loose on any fucker that decided to pile his shit onto the stack already on my back. Get off Zidane; Italy and their shady play got to him and he snapped. The guy isn't the damn Pope, he's a regular player with an average tension span (I think Rooney has a hotter head than him). He is the MVP in my eyes, and Italy won by sticking knives in everyone's backs the whole way up.

I'd be happier with Brazil, and in short and to be honest:

FUCK ITALY.

uhhhhhh, at that time, italy had THREE players offsides. And it wasn't fair?

Also, it's hard to tell if the penalty that give france their goal was or wasn't a penalty. If the defender did hit the back of the calf, then it was a penalty and was the right call. No real good camera angles though. The one in the second half was def not a penalty. The red did a real good job. I really didn't care who won, but i'm glad it was a decent game.

I can see how you'd side with Zidane's immaturity due to the great level of immaturity of your own post. What Zidane did was ridiculous! I don't see how you could say that it's at ALL sportsmanship like.

Besides, the entire game wasn't decided on Zidane's mistake, keep that in mind.

Yeah, Zidane was completely out of line with that. I would have expected with his general play as well as his experience that we wouldn't get so hot-headed. It will be interesting to see what he has to say.

He actually played it pretty cool for layin someone on their ass. He patted the ref on the back and walked out. It could have ended much worse, but also much better. Much respect to Zidane 8)

That sucks that it went down to PKs, because France definitely deserved to win. They played harder and longer than France - did you see how much they stepped up their game in the last 20 minutes?? Shit, and Henry played the entire time with a f-ing concussion! Italy was showing visible signs of wear long before France.

In my opinion, that headbutt was kick *ass*--what a way to go out! There's nothing I hate more than the Italian soccer team, and leveling one of those cocky motherfuckers is pretty much the best way I can think of to end a career.

And yes, Zidane's presence in PK's *would* have decided the game. He would have easily scored in the place of Trezeguet, tying it in PKs and sending the game to sudden death, where France would have won because they're awesome.

But, whatever; what happened happened, and man it was sweet. I wish I could find a good picture of it.

I think both sides were at fault in some way ,obviously, but the Italian player that got headbutted could've laid back a little on the drama...a person that can run for 90 straight minutes can take a blow to the chest standing up.

And I didn't say Zidane's little action was sportsmanlike in any way. And don't try laying on the insult of immaturity to enhance your opinion. I'm not going to get into an argument of pride that'll end up with both sides looking like idiots

*look! I look like an idiot already!*

I certainly can agree to that. I don't really think that headbutt would've knocked him down like that. And you're right, you never said sportsmanlike. I should've rephrased my original response.

I'm sad that Zidane's career may end on a note like that, but I really doubt he'll retire after that. He almost has to play another year just to get that out of people's minds (it still was a heinously bad-ass headbutt though). What pissed me off is that that Italian player talks shit to him and then, when he gets headbutted dives to the ground, moaning and groaning for FOUR MINUTES while they just keep showing the headbutt over and over again on the big monitors above. For the first minute or so none of the refs seemed to have any idea what happened, then one of the side judges saw the monitors and starts saying he saw the whole thing. Gah. Whatever, it was Zidane's fault and he should have been penalized for it, but it's not a way to end a career and not a way to end a World Cup. :(

you cant say he deserved getting head-butted on what he's done in the past

theres no reason for zidane to act the way he did. Zidane lost all respect from me after that game ... and i praised him for being a great player before the game. I'm happy italy won, just on account of what zidane did, you could even say that zidane lost the world cup for france

yea france did "deserve" to win .. but they didnt, thats soccer

.............

i also want to know why you guys dont think penalty's are a good way of ending a game, after those guys play for 2 hours straight ... how much more would you want them to play?
the more tired they get, the less of a game it becomes.

FOXSports.com's Jamie Trecker reports that French players told French media members that Materazzi used a racial slur which prompted the headbutt.
http://msn.foxsports.com/soccer/story/5760742

Leave it to the Italians to break out the racial slurs....

edit:

http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az= ... _id=382502
So it went something like this, he says:

"Get off me"

"What is your problem?"

"I dont like men all over me like you just were"

"Oh please, all you arabs are fags anyhow"

POW!

WTF, why can't people just play good soccer? Where's the pride? It seemed like a 'good game' was made less great. Kinda angry right now and dunno what else to say :(

Has anyone mentioned the soccer scandal going on dealing with match-fixing? Very Sad.

I don't think a racist slur justifies it at all. Unfortunately racism continues to occur in football and while it souldn't be tolerated, on-field retaliation is the worst way to deal with it.
I vaguely remember Zidane losing his temper in previous games and being sent off for something stupid, not sure if it was for France or Juve. I think these sorts of incidents are the difference between the true grerats and those who are/were simply skillfully gifted. Zidane goes into the later category with Maradona - gifted but flawed, while the likes of Puskas, Eusebio, Pele etc, are a class above.
Its one of the reason football is so compelling when played by humans, and only of passing interest when played by robots  .
I thought Henry played really well in patches. Gatusso was really good for Italy, as was Pirlo during the first half. Once France started varying their attack instead of just going to Zidane or Riberry (sp?) Italy started to struggle.

I don't agree that France "deserved to win" as some people are saying. Yes they played a more attacking and attractive style of football, but it was no more effective than the Italian game, I am happy to see these type of games go to penelties. Neither team could effectively break down their opponent so test the individuals on a single skill. If you were to make them play longer there would be alot of injuries even if you allowed more substitutions - I guess if would test the depth of teams but the game would drag on rather than climax and the quality will degenerate in any extra-extra time. I like penalties.

I thought Italy and Argentina were the two most complete teams in the tournament, Germany continued to surprise me as did France. Brazil will be better now that they can shed some of the older big names for younger players who will be in their prime in the comming years. I was happy with the way Australia performed and hopefully it will be a stepping stone to even better performances in the future but alot will depend on who replaces Huus and who is chosen to mastermind our youth development. Zidane was probably the best player up until his brain explosion, other than that there weren't really many individuals who dominated games. Essien was impressive. Ballack did really well too - I was unconvinced early on but he got better and better. Tactically there wasn't really anything new although I think coaches tried to read the ebbs and flows of the game more than in the past an subsequently substitutions were really important and often changed matches - perhaps more than in the past - maybe a result of the heat, but no doubt also a reflection of the quality of the top sides and how they can change their game in an instant.
There were some awesome goals, Argentina's amazing team effort against Serbia-Monte was the best for me. Spain also scored a good team effort built on slick passing and a classy back heal setting up the finish. Those two goals that were chested up and volleyed by Rodriguez and Joe Cole were also outstanding. Cahill's second against Japan is my sentimental favorite I still get chills when I see it. I'll remember that game for the rest of my life- Australias first WC goal/win and to come back like that was awesome.
I think Fifa should really consider on-field two referees - and at the very least referees need to go full time. Two refs would make stopages like corners and free kicks way easier to manage and players wouldnt have to dive to make infringements clear. They should also stop this 'crack-down' garbage and referee to the same standard across all competitions at all times. I'd like teams to be directed to play-on if a player goes down, and the fifth or fourth official (or second ref if they had one) can send on the medics while the game continues and the ref can stop play if necessary i.e if its a head injury or there needs to be a stretcher, or if the play heads back in the direction of the injured player rather than have the game stop every time a player takes a dive. They also need to make better calls for fouls that don't result in the player going down, as it stands you pretty much need to go down to get a free kick so players are encouraged to dive.
Anyway, it was fun while it lasted now I can get a bit more sleep and focus on Le Tour! I mean my thesis.
