ice

Post by Scott »

there was an interesting segment on 60 minutes the other night about meth-amphetamines because apparantly it is becoming increasingly popular in Australia.

They were particularly concerned about a new more pure form called 'ice'.

They said that it was even more addictive than heroine and they showed footage of kids affected and how they become violent, they also showed a brain scan of a user which showed that a part of his brain had died.

I wonder why do people use this stuff, it seems the negatives far outweigh any positive effect.

My advice kids, stay away from drugs.

Yeah I saw that too. Apparantly it makes people extremely violent and paranoid. Hard to tell though, how much did those people take? It could be misleading, but I'm more likely to trust 60 minutes than any other current affairs program.

Every new drug gets labeled as aggression causing. Go watch "Reefer Madness" from the 30's where it shows a first time stoner cutting up a room full of his friends with a broadsword. The point is, drugs effect each person differently. I'm sure this "Ice" crap probably does cause aggression in people, but I wouldn't read too far into whatever 60 Minutes has to say about any drug.

I think part of the problem is the demonisation of drugs - which basically means that a lot of people just don't trust or believe the negative information they are told about drugs. The main illegal drugs that are taken in Australia are weed and mdma - both of which have a lot of negative properganda aimed at them but both are also used in many parts of the world with the prescription of a doctor. So ice may well be a bad drug that causes a lot of problems but chances are that doesn't happen most of the time and people see other people on the drug who are fine and relate the negative press as being more lies about drugs. Certainly the 4 corners report on ice that was run a few weeks ago mainly showed people on ice having a good time and not doing anything dangerous to themselves or the people around them (apart from taking the drug) although clearly it had a negative effect on their life (being addicts). That's not to deny that some people react badly to the drug - it's just easy to see why people dismiss the negative press.

I have smoked ice twice and I had a great time on it. However it is definately highly addictive. And it last for so long. Like 8 hours depending on how much you smoke of course. It makes you party very hard. It has become the drug of choice instead of speed due to the much better comedown. Ice is pretty much a more pure form of speed i think.

I think it definately fucks people up alot if smoked regularly. Once in a blue moon i am sure you will have a good time, with limited bad effects. But it can't be good for you.

bitch, ice and tina run pretty rampant in winnipeg, probably rivals weed and blow as the most commonly used drug and it's pretty crazy stuff. you seriously can't buy drano unless you're a plumber and in certain neighborhoods it's just not stocked. same goes for certain cough/flu medicines. Having seen the effects of it's use first hand, i'd say, yes some people get pretty violent when on it, they power trip, but other just bounce off the walls and you can't controll them. i've lost a few friends (one is dead, 2 have disappeared, and what i hear through the grape vine another is prostituting her self to support her bitch habit) to using the stuff so regardless of weather or not you "think" the media maybe be over doing it, don't touch ice, and REALLY don't touch bitch!

Meth is an enormous problem in montana. 95% of our drug abuse funding goes towards meth (treating, awareness progams, scary commercials). I don't understand why people do it though. if you want to get high, why choose something that will kill you/your brain :?

isn't ice the same as crank? biggest crank house in america was right by my grandma's house where i'd visit as a wee lad before her passing. every night i'd witness people all f*ed up and making no sense. A lot of chemicals are getting stolen from our local farms too. Farmers get f*ed by this. they make less money b/c they constantly get fuel stolen from them which is needed for harvesting and what not. it's having a huge impact on our states economy. an already poor state. I also have some friends that work at gas stations. one of them was held up at gun point by a tweaker. ice and meth are scary shizz.

All Drugs = Evil

That is your problem right there. All drugs are always portrayed as pure evil regardless of any real scientific studies done. The probelm with many scientific studies of course is that they only take into account chemical effects and leave out the humanistic perspective because it it largley immeasurable.

For instance, there are many benefits to Marijuana for AIDS, Cancer, and Glaucoma patients. In addition, you've probably never actually seen anyone get really really stoned and say, "Hey, let's go do a driveby shooting." It's more like "Hey, do we have any chips."

It also laregly depends on who is doing the drugs. People with agressive tendencies or deep rooted psychological issues will more likely exhibit enhanced agression when on drugs. People who are more mentally stable or secure and/or mellow will most likely exhibit the general happy behavior that people hope for when they try a new drug.

Also you have to consider the long-term effects. If a person is able to try them once or even 20 times and retain the mental ability to stop when they feel out of control, then t remains recreational. If a person loses control over themselves when they are intoxicated on said drug then they obviously can't handle it and they are an addict or at the very least incapable of handling their shit. Just look at the effects of Alcohol.

Ultimately it comes down to educating people on the truths about drugs rather than the propoganda. MAny studies have been done to show that the human brain doesn't reach mature development until the ages of 18-20. If you fuck it up before then, well then you'll never be as smart as you could have been. If you go on to use drugs that make your brain die, well then you're a fucking moron and no one ever understood you and taught you the realities of drug use.

Am I the only one who noticed Ice has been called the "new" drug for YEARS. I remember drug education in middle school calling it a new one. I consider a drug old after 10 or 15 years of popular social use. Anyway, I wouldn't take meth in the first place, its a rampant problem in my county/area, and I despise it. Drugs can suck, but don't listen to anyone about them, decide for yourself what is wrong or right, im not saying experiment with drugs but do research on both sides. Personally I stay away from anything non ganja, even alcohol, which I do like in MODERATION, key word, but moderation can lead to addiction if you don't take care of yourself.

I think it is called the new drug because it is new the drug of choice. Like when ecstasy first came out it was considered the new drug. Ice will still be considered the new drug until something new is manufactured and hits the streets and becomes the more popular drug of choice.

I don't think anybody was claiming that - I think what I said was that the reason people do "ice" is because the media is clearly so untrustworthy when it comes to drugs that you can't really believe what they have to say. Scott originally asked why people do the drug when the effects are so widely reported and I was responding to that.
Jamieson Hickingbotham wrote:Yeah I saw that too. Apparantly it makes people extremely violent and paranoid. Hard to tell though, how much did those people take? It could be misleading, but I'm more likely to trust 60 minutes than any other current affairs program.
Sorry a little off topic but I completely disagree that 60 minutes is the most trustworthy or anywhere near the best current affairs program in Australia. The current events programs that I see as significantly better are:

Dateline, The Cutting Edge, Nightline, The 7:30 Report, Four Corners and Foreign Correspondant. Most of those mentioned have won international awards for journalism. 60 Minutes has never been nominated for any international journalism award (at least while I've been following current affairs) and never will. The closest it has come has been employing some award winning journalists after they've won their awards. 60 minutes is largly emotional manipulation and fear mongering rather than legitimate journalism - commercial journalism is generally crap.

OK so I'm not a big current affairs watcher... when I think current affairs I think today tonight, 'a current affair' and all those other dodgey waste of air time trash tv shows. Almost anything they report on I'm liable to believe the opposite, just because they reported on it.

Most of the identity theft in Arizona is credited to meth addicts. Apparently, people on meth dont mind spending hours combing through other peoples garbage in search of social security numbers etc.

As others have said in this thread, you often can`t trust what the government says about drugs. You have to be careful though, cause sometimes they are right. Its kind of a "boy who cried wolf" problem, because after years of the government telling us that marijuana is evil, you start to wonder if things like crack and ice are all that bad. My impression (I have never done these drugs) is that some drugs are way worse than others, so even if you don`t trust the govt propaganda, make EVERY effort to research your drugs before doing them. If your friend recently started doing a drug, I dont think thats a good source. You should find people who have been using the drug for years, as well as doing extensive online research.

All that said, I think meth is one of the scariest drugs out there, and I would never do it under any circumstances. Also on that list would be crack cocaine, and heroin.

Meth is Highly addictive, and it has become a Huge problem on Oklahoma. Just the other day, 2 blocks away from my house, there was a huge methamphetamine bust.
You can easily spot meth addicts (terrible teeth, skinny as fuck, lack of intelligence, and communication/motor skills). Generally, they're Very shady characters, who are always broke (and awake!)

"ICE" is Definitely the most toxic, disgusting, and most highly adictive drug. Rednecks down here make this stuff in mobile homes (that often explode, due to their stupidity). Ingredients they use are things like Starting fluid, Draino, match heads, propane, allergy medicine, animal medicine, and many other things you definitely dont want in your body.
