Alpine
What exactly is alpine? I know it has something to do with ducking. Any help would be appreciated.

Alpine
Alpine is directly correlated to ducking. (This term aids in simplifying the naming of moves). Alpine is a duck performed between two seperate dexterity 'groupings' of a single move. Alpine moves are not restricted to two dexterities. However, moves composed of more than two dexterities usually remain within two dexterity 'groupings'. For example: double over down and double legover each consist of two dexterities, yet are performed in a single fluent motion. Moves such as these, consisting of more than a single dexterity yet acting as one, are constituted as single dexterity groupings. Therefore, a [double dexterity] double legover is comparable to a [single dexterity] mirage. For example: pixie ducking mirage translates to alpine smear. The duck is performed after the pixie set (the first dexterity grouping), but before the mirage (the second dexterity grouping). And: atomic ducking double over down translates to alpine fusion. Where the duck is performed after the single dexterity atomic set (first dexterity grouping), but before the double over down (second dexterity grouping).

it doesnt always have to be a duck though, I always thought it implied the most obvious of either a duck or dive added to a move but someone recently told me that was wrong

Alpine is way of describing anything with an uptime set AND a duck/dive/weave/zulu. So spinning-ducking, pixie-ducking, stepping-ducking etc.
Examples:
Alpine Blur = Spikehammer (stp duck pdx mir)
Alpine Ripwalk = Ripped Warrior (stp duck inf)
Alpine Smear = Assassin (pix duck mir)
Not all Alpine versions of moves necessarily have other names.
EDIT: I think this term is used because saying things like "ducking ripwalk" it doesn't make sense. You can't duck and then do a ripwalk because by definition ripwalk has an uptime dex at the beginning. So alpine ripwalk assumes doing the set first (stepping), then ducking, then doing the downtime component.

So spinning-ducking
I don't agree with that. For me, for a trick to be alpine it has to have a dex then a duck then a component (usually a dexing component).
If I do a spinning ducking swirl, I wouldn't call it an alpine spinning swirl. I've also never heard of spinning dukcing clipper being called an alpine spinning clipper.

maybe, to use the term alpine, we need to dex the set (as pixies, fairies, atomic... + duck + other component).
It can also be diving. for example, i think alpine tap would be atomic + diving + same mirage.
What if pixie set + zulu + butterfly. Or pixie + weaving+ butterfly ?

It's purely a nomenclature thing. For example, Alpine Marius = spn duck pdx trq. The spin is implied in "Marius", but "ducking marius" doesn't make any sense because people spin before they duck. So really it's a term you put before a trick name that has a set to it already.
If you are talking purely in terms of components, you would still say ducking/diving/weaving/zulu. So adding a duck to spinning swirl would be spinning ducking swirl. BUT if for the sake of argument spinning swirl were called "swirlygig" let's say, then spinning-ducking-swirl could be called "alpine swirlygig" but it could still also be called spinning-ducking-swirl. Does that make sense?

Yeh ive never heard 'Alpine' used with 'Spinning' moves, and dont think it should be; except i make one misnomer when i say 'Alpine Superduperfly', just cos i think it sounds cool. haha
Alpine requires a dex before the duck/dive as far as im aware.

Also, I think alpine can only be used to refer to ducking. Not diving/weaving/zulu. Otherwise how could you distinguish those moves. ie. alpine pigbeater and pixie diving eggbeater. Another good example would be alpine blurry whirl. If you throw in a zulu instead, then the alpine wouldn't adequately describe the move.
