His commentary is pretty funny, too. I noticed on his site that he still plays, but it's too bad he doesn't go to tournaments. I woulda liked to meet him.

I think its important for n00bs to take a moment to check out the older footage that is available, to see where this sport came from. For a footbagger to not know who Ryan Mulroney is, is like a Christian not knowing who Joseph was.

Agreed. Ryan Mulroney was and is the shit when it comes to footbag. In the late 90's he pushed everyone's limits. He was hitting 50+ contact guiltless strings when the standard was 20. Not to mention multiples of 5's like it was nothing.

I remember when Vasek started to become known, before he won any major tournaments, and several people commenting on how much he played like Ryan.

It's too bad Eli took away the availability of his only vids, because there is some ridiculously great footage lost to the newcomers.

It's always nice to see something a bit more personal from a footbagger. He seems like a hell of a cool guy. I really dig his DJ sets.

It`s hard for people coming into the sport today to truly understand what Ryan was to the sport. Concepts like "genuine", "fearless" and "tripless" were all pioneered by him. Without Ryan, there would be no Vasek. Ryan was the original Vasek, but even more unbelievable, in that there was no real predecessor. Yeah, Vasek dominates now, but it`s like Deja Vu for the old schoolers: we saw this kind of dominance, this on-a-different-level phenomena before. Vasek does harder dropless routines than Ryan, longer strings, more fearless, and more bothsided.

But before Ryan?

Ryan made dropless routines a standard. Ryan made long strings the goal for all players. Fearless? I can`t recall people ever doing more than 2 or 3 before he came along. You see, while Vasek has built on what Ryan did, Ryan created the standards almost from scratch. The sport owes him a debt of gratitude.

I remember back in the day talking to Eli, and how he told me people would specifically ask not to have their string appear on a video after Ryan, cause they`d look like crap by comparison. Nobody wanted to go after Ryan in a circle. When Ryan lost to Scott at 99 Worlds, he went apeshit in the Saturday night circle to prove a point.

It`s all footage from 99 worlds. I recommend you first look at a bunch of random people`s vids to get an idea of what was considered average/good shred at the time, THEN go watch Ryan`s vids. Other than Brian and Rippins sections almost nobody else even comes close to what Ryan was laying down, even at average sessions for him.
