HELP! Trouble with video card > VHS output

I have an Nvideo Geforce 6600 with s-video out. I got it to output to my VCR but get this. I have my footbag movie playing on winamp in windowed mode and all I see on the VCR is the desktop and WINAMP and everything EXCEPT for the movie. So then I put it into fullscreen mode and NOTHING. Only sound. I thought maybe it was DIVX so I tried it with a non divx file.. then i tried it with media player instead of winamp in windowed and full screen with divx and non divx. NOTHING. So.. I think it has something to do with the resolution... or something. Please help. I want to make you guys Freestyle Reality VHS!!!

I don't know if you still need help, but in this case your best bet is to record back to mini-DV (from within Premiere Pro), then transfer mini-DV to VHS with your decks.

You probably already know this, but make sure your program is broadcast safe. If not, nest your entire sequence, then drop the Broadcast Safe filter (in Color Correction) over the nested sequence. Render, then Print to Tape.

Thanks. I got it to output. But, I'm not familiar with broadcast safe. Is that like EQ mastering on audio but for the colors of video?

Hehe, you're an audio guy and I'm a video guy. I would say Color Correction is closer to Mastering EQ. Making your media Broadcast safe is closer to clamping peaks to avoid distortion in audio. I take it you don't know how to read vectorscopes and waveforms. it's all quite complicated and obviously technical, but here's a quick breakdown.

In layman's terms, a video signal is more limited in brightness and color than RGB. If any of your luma levels (whites) are above 235 (255 is max in RGB), then your video may (audibly) buzz, pop, hum or otherwise distort when played on a TV. I see and hear it all the time, especially on rushed broadcast materials (like news), but even commercials which is just inexcusable. So basically to avoid these playback problems you have to limit the video signal on your timeline, so the luma does not exceed 235. Ok, that takes care of luma. Then you have to consider chroma (color), which gets a little more complicated. The good news is most NLE systems (FCP, Premiere, etc) have a "Broadcast Safe" filter (name may vary), which makes it very easy by clamping your luma and chroma to within broadcast safe levels. I gave quick instructions how to apply the filter in my previous post.

Last thing, that article talks about black limits at 7.5%, but only do that if you're actually going to broadcast your material (like sending it to CBS so they can put it on air). keeping your blacks at 0% will look much richer, and won't cause playback issues.
