Well, brief story before I go into the sesh. I've been unknowingly playing with shin splints for a year. I just thought it was cuz my shins were banging into my support legs during clippers. And like, I've just always had the pain, before, after, and during sessions. Not severe, but it's there. And I just play through, and I've never let it affect my game.
Well, the other day I guess I'd been pushin it pretty hard since the 4th, cuz my left shin KILLED. I was like oh great. Then I was like hmm..I wonder if this is actually shin splints. See, I'd never thought I had them cuz everyone always talked about how bad they were, and really they hadn't been terrible until then.
So, I looked them up on Health and Injuries, and sure enough that's what it was. Then I looked at the solution...Uhm, toe 100 toe taps every day? Talk about a miracle cure! Now my shins don't hurt anymore. Thanks Sunil/Erik!
Okay...7/8/06
So I brought the cam, and I was gonna try and make a little vid, or at least get some new footage of myself cuz I hadn't filmed in a while. Basically just messed around for a while and hit my usual moves, and then tried to go for a tiltless toe drill I'd been thinkin about.
ss leg>leg>ss leg>leg>mir>ss mir>mir>ss mir>ss pick>pick>ss pick>pick>ill>ss ill>ill>ss ill
Only made it as far as 2nd ss mir lol. But it's a neat drill to try and accomplish and it helps with bag control.
Then I was like: Okay stepping, it's just you and me now. No bs'n around this time. So I went at it. Trying to use all the tips I'd learned in the past month or so. Anyway, after about half an hour, it clicked. And to be honest, doing stepping slurry at first was the biggest help. Then once I figured out the motion, I was able to do it clean, with nice high sets.
DRum roll.......Then I hit BLUR which is pretty much a dream move, and followed it up with Ripwalk, also dreamy. Both first time moves basically. I hit Rip once before, but it wasn't like solid or anything. I went on to hit both several more times, very cleanly, and I just felt so great. I'm so pumped that I've finally got the hang of stepping. This is a landmark in my game. Thanks to everyone for all the tips!!!

Chris your bag came to today. It looks awesome. Gonna need some break-in, but I'm pumped. Thanks dude!
Props on getting the hang of stepping! Once you master ripwalk and blur both sides I bet you could hit smog (stepping DLO) or even blurriest (stepping barfly).
Are you definitely going to Portland next month? Hopefully I'll be there and we can shred together. Take care and keep ripping.
Peace
Ben

I wanna bump my blog back up lol.
Just thought I'd comment on the past 2 sessions briefly. Not much shred, just a lot of skooling. On my birthday session 2 days ago I hit atom smasher first time (best birthday present ever), paste, parkwalk.
Today I hit atom smasher flip, legbeater both, and maverick.
As always, my move list is in the first post.
Thanks

Well, the US Champs is only a day and a half away, so I thought I'd do a little blog post cuz I'm just so excited, and I'm sure people are sick of me posting about it in their blogs.
Footbag started for me a little over a year ago, and I never realized it would become the most important thing in my life. The thing that keeps me going, striving to be better and better. It seems like every day I just love it more that the last. Sure I get a little bummed that I'm still not that great, but who cares. I'll get there eventually.
So I guess I'll post about the last couple days. Kicked with Dave and Mike. That was fun, but I played horribly. I haven't really been kicking consistantly because of the weather, and my involvement with the Open promotion. But, it was still cool just to kick with Dave. I hit spinning* butter for the first time, on my first try. It was pretty sloppy, but it's not that hard of a move to clean up.
Then Mike went to work and me and Dave went back to his house. I'm allergic to cats as many now know lol, but we hung outside and decided, 'Hey, let's play footbag golf!' I'd never really played, but man we had a blast! We just set these frisbees down as the holes, and we'd make 3 holes at a time, then re-arrange the frisbees to make 3 more.
The course was awesome! Dave has this cool walkway going around back and in the front of his house too, so that became the water hazard lol. At one point dave kicked his drive, and it hit a stop sign, and I was like 'Oh look, it went off the tree.' Haha, it was just so much fun it was ridiculous. Which means I'm going to be playing more footbag golf in the future. Dave beat me on the front 9, and I won on the back 9, so it came out pretty even.
Yesterday I broke into a school. (Well, the door was open) But I just like went in there and used their gym to kick. About 40 min into it, the principle hinted towards wanting me to leave. So I left.
Today I found a new spot. It's the building across the street that my friend lives in. They have a tiny gym, but it's air-conditioned and carpeted. So I kicked there today. I'm happy about my session today. It was a LOT of drilling. Actually, all drilling. Osis and Infinity, and a few other things.
I figured out why I'm not guiltless yet today. It's not osis and infinity necessarily. It's a lot of my basics that need refreshing. Specifically flip illusion, flip butter, stuff like that. So, as the current Shred 30 World Champion likes to say, 'Back to the Basics'.
I've decided to make new drills for myself, because that's always what has worked for me. So I did a new drill: butter>ss pickup>rpt. Kept doing that, and at one point hit that 7 times, so 14 contacts of it. Anyway, it's helping my flip butter. But I think that's going to be most of my sessions for a while. Just lots of basic drilling.
Well, that concludes this blog sesh. Sorry mine doesn't have 12 year old screaming girls in it lol. I'm so excited to meet my footbag heroes in Portland!

I figured something out today, from a combination of worlds vids and the scenic session video,
Dont push guiltlessness. NONE of the europeans push it, and they can play so well, with a few clippers and mirages peppered in. A huge tiltless run with 4's and 5's in it is much more impressive than a run with 80% bops and other 3 adds. Instead of getting butterfly and osis easy as breathing, make other moves like drifter/whirl/double downs/swirls that easy also, so your runs can be varied, and hitting those moves out of sets wont be much harder than hitting a butterfly out of sets. i kind of wish i could start over

WOW. Okay, 6 events for zilla this year, this one being by far the best as far as level of shred, and competition goes.
Thursday 08/10- Terrorist Scare. I haven't flown in 8 years. I picked the best day to start flying! So, when I FINALLY get to Portland, I see that my luggage didn't get there with me. So, no shoes to play footbag with or toothpaste or a change of clothes or anything. Yeah, Thursday's actually kind of a blur even cuz I just blocked it out cuz I was pretty bummed.
Friday 08/11- Woke up, went to the mall to buy an extra change of clothes and toothpaste. Luckily the airport finally called and said they had my bag. Drove James Randall's car to go get my shit.
Um, this date format is messing me up cuz there's so many memories and I can't remember which days they were. So, anyway, the hotel crew was me, Iron Clad Ben, James Randall, Kyle Hewitt, Zeb Jackson, Evan Gatesman, and Ben Skaggs. Me, James and Iron Clad did the most hanging out during the 4 days we were there. Me, Iron Clad, Randall, Zeb, Kyle, Evan, Dave, and Ben Skaggs went to Red Robin at some point and got burgers and bottomless Freckled Lemonade. Gotta say the lemonade lived up to it's reputation. I had like 4 glasses, and Kyle had a bunch, I know he was going for his record which was 9.
Party
Party scene wasn't as great as other tournaments I've been to. Friday's party was pretty much just a small get together, and Saturday's party kinda raged a little, but it was mostly cuz Noah's band was playing in the basement and there were a bunch of his friends there. Footbaggers kinda stayed on the porch and just talked and drank beverages. I made out with some irish chick woohoo. Sunday night actually was the most fun party-wise. We all watched a really cool movie, and I had fun hangin with Steven K. Barnes and Sammy the man Potter. Me and Matt Cross hung out some during the weekend. Hmm, Luis and I had a cool conversation. Idk, I can't remember anything else significant. Oh yeah, we played crotchfire with Jeremy Mirken. Man, he's good!
Shred
I kicked with a ton of different people this weekend. I kicked with Steven which was awesome-he and I got a chance to hang a little and talk to, he's a great kid. Uhm, Nasty Nate of course. Matt, everyone really. It was cool kickin with Sunny Genz. She's really good! Kyle and Zeb were awesome too. Man I really underestimated both of them. They're really good right now. I think cuz they spent a ton of time training with Jim Penske for the event.
I played pretty well this weekend. I was hitting decent strings, and getting a few stylie things in as well. I hit 3 new 4 adds: spinning osis, spinning pdx mirage, and pdx drifter. Pretty pumped about that. But mainly I just learned a ton and brought back a lot of things that I need to do to advance my game.
Comp
Holy Cow. Every event was huge during the weekend. I think what set the stage was Rippin Run. Dave's never lost a Rippin Run in pro competition, and this was no exception. He had a tough bracket too, especially at the end where he went against 2 people, then one-on-one with Jorden (86 Contacts), then vs. Penske (76 Contacts). It was pretty epic!
Shred 30 was insane. Everyone busted HUGE, and Dave and Jorden went dropless the 2nd day. Jorden-268, Dave-262, and Penske-248. Those are all higher than any of the Worlds Shred 30 scores!
Circle Comp was ridiculous. PERFECT format and execution of this event. Ellis Plitz made a surprise appearance and did an amazing job MCing the event. It was so exciting watching each circle and getting instant results to see who moved on to the next round. Jorden, Dave, Penske, and Nate all busted so huge and it made for great drama. I have it on vid, and I'll be making a vid soon hopefully.
Routines- This was it. This was what it was all about. Dave came out to get it done, and well, got her done. The routines were all great. Steven Barnes got 5th, which was HUGE. There were 7 players in finals.
I don't know, it was so close in routines. Jorden's routine was hilarious. He came out with a leather vest and a hat and did a routine to 'I'm too sexy for my'. It was really funny and he made all of his cues, but dropped 3 times. Idk, it was REALLY close I thought between Dave and Penske's routine. Penske had a great song, amazing runs, and a few dramatic cues. There was one where he hit a huge move, (can't remember what it was) but then on the clipper did this dramatic pose to the music. It was pretty amazing I must say, 1 drop. Dave's first routine was dropless, but it was definitely a prelim routine. Kinda slow, with a lot of pauses. Finals routine was awesome though. He only dropped once, and the song was great, his cues were great. And of course he busted huge, hitting some big moves in routine.
All in all this was the best event I've been to, I've been to 6 this year now. Portland was cool, hangin out with James and Ben was fun. The competition was as good as it gets! I've got a lot of cool video footage, it'll be neat to re-watch all this stuff. Thanks again to all the guys who made this an amazing jam!

Oops haha thanks. 268, 262, 248. Sorry, I was dead tired when writing the blog post.setman wrote:little mistake, i think.shredzilla wrote: Shred 30 was insane. Hmm, I'm just gonna keep reporting as bits and pieces come back to me. I should've waited a few days for the write up lol. More write up stuff is like 3 posts above this one.
Anyway, Circle was really neat cuz in the finals Elis announced it would be two 3 minute rounds to decide the winner. The audience and everyone was surrounding the circle, and it made it seem really dramatic. Penske won the first round hands down. Then round two came and it was clear that Dave had won that one. So then the crowd started yelling 'One more round, one more round!' And Elis finally heard it and asked if we wanted one more round, make some noise, etc. Anyway, it was so huge, and they went at it for a final round, which Dave won. Elis is an amazing MC. I've never heard someone that good on the mic in person for an event.
Here's some of the people I kicked/talked to/hung out with during the weekend:
Zeb, Kyle, Sunny Genz, Fletcher, Emily, Nasty Nate, Matt Cross, Will Digges, Sam, Steven, David, Evan Gatesman, Ben Skaggs, Ben Benulis, James Randall, Mike Hansen, Luis Monholland, Brian, Jorden, Penske, Darryl Genz, Steve Goldberg, Elis, Dat.
Anyway, you can see that hanging out with that many cool people can be pretty fun and exciting. Yay footbag~!!

Whenever I go to ANY footbag tournament, I always carry:
1. My shred shoes.
2. My best shred shorts
3. My best footbag
and
4. My best shred shirt
-all in my carry-on luggage. I either wear it on my person, or have it in my backpack. Cause you just never know when the airlines will lose your stuff, and at a tourney, you don't have time to get new shoes/etc and break them in properly. Besides, its a lot of stress.
Oh wait. Oh yeah.

Seriously, it makes you wonder what would have happened if these people had gone to worlds. With 268, Jorden would have taken 1st at Worlds!shredzilla wrote: Shred 30 was insane. Everyone busted HUGE, and Dave and Jorden went dropless the 2nd day. Jorden-268, Dave-262, and Penske-248. Those are all higher than any of the Worlds Shred 30 scores!
!
Oh wait. Oh yeah.

Yeah Jorden rocked the HOUSE in Shred 30. So did everyone really, even the intermediates. Fletcher and Dylan broke 100? Crazy stuff.
08/16/06 Ducking Session
Okay, well this was the first session since the US Open and I really wanted to try and incorporate some of the things I'd learned in Portland into my game.
Wow, I had a GREAT session. Started kinda slow just doin some tiltless drills, but for some reason things were just clicking. Like, where I'd normally go pickup>butter>rpt, I would throw in a mirage or legover or far pickup, or pdx mirage in there to break it up. That may not sound like much, but I guess the amazing thing was I was able to improvise on my strings much more than before, which in turn boosted my unique ratio and my string lengths.
SOOO...then I just for some reason got this itch to start trying ducking variations. I really don't even know why, it just came to me. Probably because I saw so much of it in Portland, especially from Mr. Stylie himself, Nate Linscott.
Anyway, here's some more of today's session:
Ducking clipper bsos
Diving clipper bsos +1 -NEW
Diving butterfly -NEW
Weaving cliipper -NEW
Weaving butterfly -NEW
Zulu clipper-NEW
Zulu butterfly -NEW
Oh yeah, and one of the highlights was diving clip>infin>diving clip.
Thanks Nasty Nate!
