Miserable night. Woke up early as hell for no particular reason and I can't get back to sleep. I'm going for a ride and see how that "new" fork handles.

Hi-5!

Last time we were playing 4 square I started thinking about all the energy and flexibility you have and awesome saves you make while we play, and why you don't always win.

Got over that freaking cold just in time for the L.A.T.E. Ride charity. Tried to drink and stay hydrated during the day and just before I left for the evening. I wanted to ride the bike a bit just to check and make sure everything was working properly and tune my brakes and shifters. I ended up having to do a load of laundry consisting of all my underwear. They were not dry from the last time but in my haste to get to work I just stuck them all in my wardrobe. When I opened it sunday afternoon this heinous rank smell hit me and I almost puked. It smelled like dead rotting children in there :( I ran them through 2 wash cycles just in case and made sure they were completely dry when I was done.

Anygay, Meinard picked me up early and we found a great spot to park in the loop relativley close to the Grant Park. We had a bit of trouble with his rear skewer and his tire kept coming off. We had it checked out by one of the bike repair stations at the park and they said it was fine. I think it just came loose when we were pulling the bikes out of his trunk.

We started a bit late since the rest of our group had not arrived yet. But we did manage to get going seconds before the second wave of riders left the mark. Our pace was painfully slow, definately not something I was used to. I saw all these people just sprinting past us and desperately wanted to give chase. I stayed with the group for most of the ride, sprinting after stoplights then having to wait for the rest of the group to catch up. We got to to the rest area midway through the course but everyone was feeling good so we rode off after a few minutes to snack, refill water and take a few pics. About a mile away from Foster and the Lakefront I saw a handfull road bikes and a couple MTB's blow right past us. I just gave in and went after them. I was cranking away and cought up sooner than I thought and ended up just blowing right past them! I was feeling good so I just kept on going. At this point I had just blasted my way about 3/4 of a mile (6 blocks) in front of my group and I really didn't want to slow down and wait for them. I just kept on going finally finding a pace I could maintain for the rest of the ride (9 miles) and still have enough energy for short bursts of speed to get past large groups of slow bikers.

The course eventualy made its way through the narrow bike paths that line the lakefront. This was probably the best part of the ride. There's just enough room on the trail for 4-5 riders, shoulder to shoulder so there were plenty of times that it got very cramped and I was only inches apart from the bike next to me while we were speeding down the curves of the path in the dark. There were times where I was just being a complete ass and weaving in and out of mass of slower bikers just for the hell of it. At about Diversey or Fullerton I started trailing a pair of cyclists all decked out in their matching jerseys and bike shorts on these really slick road bikes with the thinnest tires I think I've ever seen. They were pushing their way just a little harder than I was but pretty much opeing an easy path for me to follow. I think they were a bit annoyed at the fact I was following so close behind and they tried ditching me a few times, I managed to catch up on a few occasions because there was not enough open lane for them to pass other riders.

This continued on until we reached Grant Park. The 2 cyclists made a final sprint to Buckingham Fountain and I chased for as long as I could (just to see if I could) until finally gassing out and coasting the last few blocks. McDonalds was the main sponsor and they were giving out water and breakfast at several tents. There were people with bright smiley faces handing out bags of bagels and fruit asking the bikers about the ride. I barely acknowledged them as I grabbed what I could, dripping with sweat and and my jaw hanging wide open. My panting turned my sweat into mist as it dripped from my upper lip. I think one lady thought I had spit on the bags of food  I moved on.

I walked over to the east end of the fountain and had my breakfast at the foot of the stairs facing Lake Shore Drive. I gassed out on my last run but my legs felt good and there was no numbness from riding for so long. Meinard and the rest of the group arrived about 30 minutes later, I met up with them and we watched the rest of the riders come from the other side of LSD then waited for sunrise. I was pretty tired by the time we had seen the tip of the sun come up. It was this thin slice or red-orange in the middle of all this gray and blue. Next thing we knew it bacame a big yellow ball of eye pain  8) It was actualy amazing to see how fast it came up over the horizon. That was the second time I've seen the sun rise over the lake. Pretty cool.

Over all it was a good experience and I look forward to it next year. I would preffer to keep a faster pace throughout and have some company while I'm at it.

Random stuff:
-NEVER seen so many bikes in the same place
-people doing jumps off the stairs
-some guy in a suit and tie bunny hopping up the stairs
-BMX freestyle by the lake
-some sweet-ass bikes
-some sweet ass on bikes
-hacking before the ride with Meinard
-blowing past road bikes with my new tires
-"Uh, I think those were guys... my eyes burn" LOL

I answered the phone at work on Monday:

"Hi, I spoke with you a few hours ago and you said you would call me back"

"Oh, I think you spoke with the other assistant, I just got in. She's still helping the doctor, how can I help you?"

"Oh your right, it was another woman I was speaking to..."

Got my drivetrain cleaned at the the bikeshop. There was about 7 years of dirt and all sorts of other crap on there. I got the chain replaced several years ago but rarely cleaned/lubed anything after that. Used WD40 a few times then I read that it was not good to use for bikes. Used some generic oil I got at Walgreens and the dirt seemed to accumulate even faster. I figured I'll let the shop take it apart and do a hardcore cleaning so it will be easier for me to clean and maintain it in between tune ups.

Bought a portable stand so I can do minor work on my bike at home. Folds up to something that can fit into my cargo shorts (that would be kinda akward though). Also got some dry chain lube. I read some reviews of the product and it seemed ok. Most of the complaints were from people saying it attracted too much dirt for a dry lube and/or that they would often have to re-apply every other ride.

Not really sure what sparked all this interest in biking lately. I've always liked to ride but I've pretty much neglected my bike up until recently. Perhaps finding a bike shop close by has a lot to do with it. The prices are ok but the service/repair has been good (and fast). They're knowledgable but not obnoxious about it. I asked quite a few questions and if the initial sales person did not know he would find someone that could help me out. It's been a fairly good experience so far. More importantly, I've been riding and getting more exercise during the week. It's more fun and not as bad on my knees and feet as jogging.

What I've done within the last 4 weeks
-replaced grips
-replaced saddle
-installed new fork
-fixed front shifter
-new tires*
-got some tire levers*
-bought mini tool*
-bought floor pump
-new pair of inner tubes
-bought another water bottle cage
-got a chain guard
-clean drivetrain
-bought stand
-got chain lube

*different shop, sale

Aw, no babies today. Went biking around the lakefront. Got breakfast at Fontanos and took some pics during the ride. Going with Meinard to a company picnic at North Ave beach now. I initialy turned down the invitation to go with him but I figured it's too nice outside to sleep the rest of the afternoon.

Played squares with Tony, Marty (+2 bros.), Freddy, Nathan and Meinard. Went to eat at Garcia's. We were eating in an open court when some toddlers were playng near my bike. I had it leaning up against a light post, unlocked. The youngest of the kids moved the bike and it slid down, knocking the little guy over. I rushed over and asked if he was ok and he just stared back up at me. His father came over to make sure the kid was alright. As I rolled my bike closer to where Nathan, Freddy and Meinard were sitting Nathan commented, "Even your bike hurts children!" My knees buckled from laughing.

Then on the way home I started screaming out the car window to get some girls' attention... it was pretty funny, but not something I could describe here...

Have not jogged once this month like I had planned. Meinard has been trying to diet and exercise since he had a bit of a wake-up call from his last Dr's visit. So he's been carefully watching what he's been eating and trying to be more active. I've been more active but I struggle to eat healthier.

I just called him and asked if he wanted to bike with me 3 times a week after work. I made it clear that it wasn't to go cruising and sight seeing but to actually keep a fast steady pace for 15-20 minute intervals and slowly increasing the time as we progress. He sounded reluctant but did agree to do it Wednesdays nights. Oh well, it's better than nothing at this point. We'll see how this works out.

Tony mentioned that his b-day was coming up next month and he wanted to have a 4-Square tournament at the park. I'm all for it. I spoke to him a few weeks ago about having an invitational type event sometime. Maybe we can try it out...
