Footbang fo' life
I was all the way on page 4! Yikes. Well guess I should update this thing. Between that last post and now (a period of 3 months) I have had about 10 sessions. I would not play for 2-3 weeks straight. I don't know what was wrong with me but near the end I really did want to start playing, I just never got around to it. I want to give my game one last earnest chance before I throw in the laces and just play for 'fun'. I mean I've always enjoyed playing but the pressure of wanting to get better and not seeing enough improvement always got me down. Maybe I didn't practice enough...I want to be good. I know what's missing in my game, just some little pieces of consistancy/timing, but it's so frustrating. I've been playing for 5 years now, and I don't have enough to show for it. I'm going to start a serious training program but also keep my head on and not lose patience or focus. I really really want to do this.
Also I've been planning on switching to Goonits soon but before I do I want to be able to play and hit everything with the lavers first so that it's not a cop out but a vast improvement. I need the units, they will help me so much.
I don't plan on going to any tourneys (except the montreal jam) until I reach a new plateau in my game...if the summer goes well maybe the winter will too...and then worlds 07...
We'll see. That's the lowdown folks, thanks for listening.
Gonna have a sesh with some of the Montreal cats this afternoon, WOOT!
Peace
edit: maybe this is a sign but this post ended up being the first on page 6! New start and all that jazz. Pretty damn cool.

Correct Tom, the last time we played together was the first TOFU jam, and we will shred again for the second TOFU jam. What about the Montreal jam, you comin'? I certainly hope so.
My game is improving. In some ways I feel better than I've been before but in other ways I know I'm still missing some of the game I used to have. I couldn't stick blurry whirl b2b the other night, which is pretty basic stuff. I hit a nice scorpions tail. String length seemed ok, I hit a few 10-15 contact strings, mostly genuine. I need to make some kind of training program. I'm really excited about footbag. OH yeah I also have G-G-G-G-G OOON UNITS!! But I don't know how to mod them. I feel comfortable enough with my osis to do the switch though so it's all gravy.
I will make the next update more interesting I promise.

Wassup mah peeps! Shreddin' hard I hope. I've successfully converted to the Goon-units and things are great. I played only two sessions with them and they were two of the most controlled sessions I've ever had. I was hitting 15 contact strings regularly, that is BIG news. I find the units force me to do my dexes the way they're supposed to be done...with the anklem leaving me more room for the delay and control. And the toe surface on mine is as good as the lavers if not better. I've only made two mods to them so far: Removed the outside leather on the toe and clipper surface and standard laver mod to open up the toe box. I might consider some other mods but the shoes are working for me as is.
In any case I haven't had a sesh in over a week and this is partially due to a new tattooo I got on my lower back. It's pretty big and it hurt like a bitch in some places. Waiting for it to heal before I can shred again.
Can't wait though, things are falling into place with my game.
I'll have to have a last little burst of training before the montreal tourney so I'm ready for it, plus practice my sick 1's
peace

Fuuuuuuuuuucccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
life sucks right now...c'est la vie eh?
Fractured my fucking left wrist, which might not have been so bad if I wasn't LEFT HANDED!! I can't play footbag for a long time, well 6 weeks feels like a long time. Happened before the Montreal jam too, with all that was happening I couldn't even make it there to say hello.
I want to play.
I want to be able to use my other arm, this is hell.
You can never know what you have until it's gone.
I also can't work due to said injury and they don't cover me so I'm so totally screwed.
See ya'll in a loooooonnnnnnnngggggggg time.

Wassup ninjas? It's five a.m. in the morning and I'm bored and thinking about footbag.
So, when can I start playing again? In two weeks when the cast comes off. Am I excited? You betchya. I think I can devote myself to footbag for the next year since I fucked up in school. I figure I'll just work full time nightshift and train during the day, save up money, go to tournies, all that shit.
Actually I was thinking about heading down to Kingston before fall to shred with Tom since I missed like three tournaments already. And I'll drag Nick with me. I figure I'll be in top shape by mid-August.
Alright it's sleepy time.
peace.

I'mmmmmmmmmm bbbbbbbacccccccccckkkkkkk! WOOT!
Thanks for the wise words Andrew, you're absolutely right. One should never take the ability to play footbag for granted because in an instant you may not be able to play for along time.
And here's the good news...the cast is off! Since last Monday (last week) and I've been doing excercises to get the mobility and strength back, but more importantly I can shred pretty much at full capacity.
I had my first real session since May with Nick last week and it went great considering the time lapse. Like it was almost exactly where I left off (besides the rustiness). The Units are great. Stayed away from alot of the big moves, but still hit many of the standard fives with ease.
Nick is so fun to watch play...I wish I could tape it so I could remember/see all the links that he does, it's really incredible.
Now it's time to get serious and train like every day...and I'm looking forward to Kickass 2, I missed so many tourneys this summer.
Anyway that's it for now, I'll update when I've hit something decent.
Peace!
edit: oh shit I forgot to mention I hit zulu drifter the other night!

So true. Glad that you are healed and back shredding. Hopefully we can play at Kickass2 or some other jam. I will be relatively close to Montreal for the next 2 years, so we should get in some shreds. Again, welcome back to the world of footbag.james wrote:, you're absolutely right. We should definitely get some shred in at some point Ken, I'm going to make an effort to go to more tournaments.
Well it's been a while as usual. I've come to some groundbreaking decisions/conclusions about my game. The biggest is a change in perspective about BAP. I used to play with the goal of getting into BAP first and foremost, of being this amazing shredder. I've been realizing that I can never make BAP. Maybe I don't practice enough, maybe I don't have the determination, maybe I just don't have IT. You know, that thing that makes you good. But for the first time I don't care. When I realised that it felt like a lot of pressure was taken off my shoulders. I've actually been slacking off quite a bit, need to start playing more often, but I've just stopped caring about how good I am. Before I was always obsessed with that, with getting better and I never made enough progress, I was always missing that little extra something to make everything click. I've had glimpses of it but it's always just out of my reach. So I'm going to focus more on the health and enjoyment factor now and not worry about holding up against the big boys.
Plus there is no monopoly on style or combos.
Gotta get into shape for Kickass, I'm useless right now!
Peace out bruthas

Hooooooooooooooo my. Wowwwwwwwwwsooooooooo.
So yeah how's the footbag world been?
I had one session last week and one session this week. I was sore for 3 days after.
Mannnnnnnnn I succccccck. that' why I'm repeating letters like sooooooooooooooooo.
It's gonna take some effort to get the edge back, and even more to get where I want to be, which I have a fair idea of in my mind. Mostly it's just to be able to shred consistantly.
I hit an irish cream tonight hahaha. Whoopdee freakin' doo, I can't string for shit. Ahh but playing feels so good and I'm excited to be back into it. I want to be bustin' out osii and zooms and ducks into mobs into vortex etc. I love any kind of torque, I want to master all torques. Blenders are neat too, you know, even just on their own, so sexy.
On a competely unrelated note have any of ye heard o' live at stubbs?? HOLY FREAKIN" SHIT IT IS MINDBLOWING LIKE WOW OMG
ya, no joke, fo' real. Seriously good shit. Can't stop listening to it. Like 5 times a day every day. But I have problems.
Hmm I wonder if anyone here plays smash bros melee...such a fun game. Wavedashing anyone?
On another unrelated note I'm going through ff12. It's pretty fun. Don't like the lack of uniqueness in the characters but there is some difficulty in many of the fights. Member the days of ff6 when every character (like 20 of em) each had their own unique badass ability? Or in ff8 I would pwn with quistis mighty guard and rinoa berserked sorcerer. Buckets o' fun.
I must be pretty bored.
I'm reading the lone drow right now, getting through that whole series again. Don't know why I started it. It's easy reading, repetitive, but still enjoyable. I just did wheel of time the second time round too...i'm gonna need some sci-fi soon.
Oh yeah world of warcraft is the gayest dumbest stupidest game ever. How the hell can so many people be duped? Gosh it's annoying.
Everyone I know has now been addicted to it and that's all they do, they won't go out or chill out or play mtg, they just fucking sit there and play the most useless game ever. Of course magic had been getting quite annoying as of late. Most of my decks are made to have fun, which is probably a bad idea since I hate losing but I can't help it. Discard is just about the most frustrating thing to play against.
bla bla bla
aight think I'm done, feel free to have not read this.

Howdy howdy, great to be back in full ninja action. The last bit of rust fell off my blades last session, felt so good.
I just made a tentative shred30 move list for worlds. This is the first time I've prepared one, I used to think that preparing shred30 was wrong but now I understand it's the only way you can come close to doing good.
I think routines is going to be so much harder to prepare...what's it like 2 and a half minutes?? I've got tons of ideas brewing, and tons of songs to choose from. I want to make it as visually appealing as possible.
I'd also like to get a video camera...hmmmm
I've got a session tonight (whether alone or with Nick I'm not sure yet), I'll keep this bitch updated.
Peace

I guess I'm due an update. I wish I was able to post cool things I've hit but I'm just not capable, nothing is noteworthy.
I've been playing at least 5-6 times a week since mid-january and it's going good I suppose. I need more practice though. I wonder how much practice it takes other people to get where they are.
It's really a struggle for me, but I'm not disappointed because I love playing and want to keep getting better.
I also bought a camcorder, it's a Sony DCR-SR40 whatever that is. It's pretty badass though, I can zoom right up someones nostril.
I taped a solo session just to see what my style looks like and it seemed decent, but I was playing in my hallway which just feels enclosed and awkward.
If ya'll are lucky I'll put together a vid on here. I have to learn how to edit though, I guess premiere is the best?? Should be fun.
I want my legs to be able to handle 2 sessions per day five times a week. One drill session and one shred session, every day. I've still got months till worlds...which reminds me, I have to get my passport.
Ok I should put at least ONE highlight in here...
blurry whirl>spinning whirl bsos
Hopefully I'lll have the energy to shred tonight before work...damn nightshifts.
aight, peace out

So I managed to get my pre-work shred in and it was incredible. Played just under an hour but my mental game was fucking on. And I must stress this, the mental game is EVERYTHING.
I wrote a bunch of shit down and I'm going to put it in here.
1) Break the moves up in your head as you hit them. So you don't have this conglomerate 'blurry whirl' which may seem intimidating, instead you have your step, easy enough, then whirl, also quite easy. Believe me this works!
2) Always wait for the bag, see it stalled before proceeding to the next move. I've always stressed about this but when I play I always forget to do it so I'm repeating it. Very important. This is how you link.
3) The goal is to hit very move expending as little energy as possible. This is a direct measure of control. Expending less energy (i.e. that effortless look and feel) allows for retainment of balance and prepares you for the next trick.
4) Always watch the bag and visualize your body in relation to it as you're hitting tricks. Requires a certain amount of focus, but comes easy to good players.
5) There is a huge difference betweeen contructive practice and mindless drilling. Drilling is very important, there's no doubt about it, but how you approach each attempt can directly affect the general improvement of your game from that session. If you're repeatedly missing a trick or find it's taking too much out of you (balance and/or energy), you're probably doing something wrong (or your muscle memory isn't there yet). Try to imitate your goodside (or a good player) as much as possible or attempt different techniques until it feels easier...such as:
- Don't be afraid to set higher, most dt moves should be set about waist height at least
- Jump into your moves more. I can't count how many times this minor adjustment has been the difference between dropping or hitting a trick.
- Spot longer. Forcing even just an extra split second could be what it takes, especially when the bag goes behind you (like in the osis family; torques, blenders etc)
6) Try to feel comfortable when you play, as opposed to frantic. This is that effortless feel. Really have a sense of your legs being blades or well muscles machines completely in your control. We are ninjas, don't ever forget it! Stalling surfaces should be confident. I can't really explain it but I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about. Concrete clipper.
7) Bouncy. Be bouncy. All good players bounce, even on toe stalls.
Maintain a positive/constructive frame of mind. Even during the most frustrating of sessions when you're missing something you're supposed to have dialed, you can turn the whole session around with a little success. Try some of the things mentioned above and all will be well. Or go have a goddamn beer and watch some vids.
Well that was quite a bit. Just wanted to put it out there for anyone that's been as frustrated as I have been. I don't plan on being frustrated anymore.
As for the sesh, it felt super controlled, here are some highlights:
vortex>void (touched)
blurry whirl rpt
blurriest all over the place and soooo easy
zooming out of blenders and torques
more to come!

I think I'm due an update.
I've being practicing a lot lately and will continue to increase my play time until I'm playing like 15-20 hrs a week.
I'm actually, finally making palpable progress with my game. It feels so good. I never get frustrated anymore, I just approach things differently in my head now.
I've got a decent amount of footage now (some of which is usable), so as soon as I get my computer next week I'll start messing around with it.
Never been more happy to play footbag, every move seems amazing to me.
I love zooming, especially into ducking and diving osii, then zooming those.
I don't really have any highlights cuz I forgot em all.
Haven't played since last thursday because I got a new tattoo on my leg. Just waiting for it to feel comfortable, I think I can have a sesh tomorrow.
More next week.

Ok ok I'm lazy I know.
So yeah, Derrick came down for some shred n partay on the weekend and it was hot shit. There were quite a few people and we tore it up for 3 hours. Almost all of the disjointed (and shifty) Montreal crew showed up. We had both Math's, Kolo n Koa, Ianik, myself and our guest. Near the end it was a 3-man with Ianik, Derrick and me and we were trying all kinds of drills and hard shit. Like someone would call a link like blurry whirl>bedwetter and we'd all have a couple goes at it. It was a lot of fun. Derrick got me to hit my first double spinning clipper, which I had never really thought of trying before.
Frig I wish I could remember stuff better. In any case I had never seen him play before and I was quite impressed. He's got a great body type for footbag and good style (which is like the most important thing). I can't wait to head down to Kingston and shred with the KFM. After the shred I went home and had some brewskys (just about the greatest thing after a hard session). I called Nick and we met up with Derrick later on, pregamed at his hotel and headed out. We started the night a little late though and it was goddamn daylight savings so we lost an hour but it was still hella fun. Went to cheers which is kind of a shifty place, and of course the barfights started to break out at 3. Always entertaining. Good times.
Back to footbag.
I've been playing in unmodded blue Units and it's going good. Because the leather is so slippery I have to make sure I wait for the bag so it's good training, but I'll have to mod them soon because the bag slips on sets sometimes. They're a half a size smaller than the last pair I got and it feels amazing. I also just recieved a second identical pair in the mail today WOOT!
So basically I'll go to my sessions in a nice unmodded pair all badass n shit, then change to my shred ones for the sesh. I'm so cool.
I'm also going to get the camos, the green ones and a pair of black if I can find them. I freakin' love that shoe.
ALSO I think I may have discovered a NEW footbag shoe, of similar build to the UNIT. I still have to do the research and testing but I may be on to something, more on that another time.
I haven't been using my camera as much because I'm at a standstill with the editing. Premiere is NOT user friendly. I'm gonna try to get my way around the windows video maker but it's kidna annoying. So no footage for my legions of fans for a while
My game feels good these days, just need to keep my head in it and practice practice practice.
Gonna have a sesh tonight with the crew, my legs are still sore but I can't wait.
